1 2250 Royal Canadian Army Cadets Bracebridge, Ontario Commander s Corner The 2009/2010 cadet training year was a year of firsts and change for the Muskoka Pioneers. I took over command of the corps and one of our own, CWO Ruttan, was publicly recognized with a Bracebridge Examiner Youth Achievement Award for his years of volunteerism with the corps in our community. We re-branded the corps with our new logo, which is on the cover of this newsletter, and it will hopefully assist us in increasing our cadet strength this fall. We added two new officers, Captain Sculthorp and Officer Cadet Bilz, as well as one new Civilian Volunteer, David Bussiere, who brings diversity and strength to the corps. We also have an influx of new people to the Support Committee who have many enthusiastic ideas for new events and fundraising. Staff and the Committee have worked together to put on our end of cadet training year trip to Eaglecrest Aerial Park in June. It is my sincere hope that this type of trip will become an annual event. In addition, this fall will mark the first time in several years that we have run a senior cadet leadership exercise. These are very positive developments which demonstrate that it is an exciting time to be a part of the Muskoka Pioneers. Stick with it! There is something in the army cadet program for everyone, and the staff and I look forward to working with each and everyone of you to help you achieve success. 3 May/August 2010 Page 3 An Article for Everyone Creating Fire with a Magnesium Bar From the desk of Cool Breeze This is a simple skill that can be taught to everyone and it will definitely impress your friends on your next outing or camping trip where a campfire is required. 1. Scrape a small amount of shavings from the smooth side of the bar into the size of a dime. 2. Add an amount of dry tinder equal to the size of a two dollar coin to the shavings. 3. Turn the bar to the flint striker side and firmly draw the blade of your knife downward causing the sparks to ignite the shavings which will also ignite the tinder. Now that your fire is burning, add small sticks until it burns freely. Always ensure your campfire is fully extinguished before you leave your campsite area. Making a fire is as simple as 1, 2 and 3. Note: The below bar clearly states which area you shave on and which area is to light or spark the shavings. 6 May/August 2010 Page 6 Support Committee 2250 Royal Canadian Army Cadets is sponsored by a Support Committee comprised of a dedicated group who volunteer their time for the benefit of the Cadets. The Committee is consistently working on a number of fund-raising initiatives to provide the Cadets with the resources needed for a full and fun year of activities. How do you help? They operate the canteen during training nights and organize the annual parade, tag days and other fundraising events. They also coordinate Cadet Involvement in community events such as the Royal Canadian Legion poppy. They meet monthly to discuss ongoing initiatives, and volunteer their time and skills in many other ways. Your help is always needed, no matter how much time you can give, and even if you think you have no skills to contribute. The next Newsletter will have written stories of the Cadets summer camp experiences, and pictures of the summer camp friends and activities remembered for a life time. Camp Experience All Cadets were given the opportunity to attend summer camps with 1st year Cadets spending 2 weeks at Blackdown Cadet Training Centre located on CFB Base Borden, 2nd year Cadets 3 weeks, and 3rd year and onwards 6 weeks or more. I would like to invite all the Cadets to share their camp experience by ing or providing us with a written blurb, and any pictures that you would like to have included in our next Newsletter publication.
