2 INTRODUCTION To: The Parents of Recruits Welcome to the Army Cadet Program! Your son or daughter has elected to become a member of the 1913 Ontario Regiment Royal Canadian Army Cadets (Ont R s). The Royal Canadian Army Cadet is one of the oldest youth organizations in Canada and celebrated its 130 anniversary in 2009 #1913 RCACC was originally formed in 21 Jan 1943 under the designation of th Army Tank Regiment (Ontario Regiment) Cadet Corps. In 1948, designation was changed to th Armoured Regiment (Ont R) Cadet Corps. In Mar 1949 authority was granted for the Corps to be re-designated as 1913 Ontario Regiment Cadet Corps. The Ontario Regiment (Reserve Unit) has been the sponsor and affiliated unit since our formation in The old Cadet Corps flag is laid up in St.Matthew's Anglican Church in Oshawa (1980). The Regimental March Dismounted is John Peel As a recruit parent we will be attempting to recruit you into becoming a member of the Support Committee. Our Corps has a highly successful Support Committee. They support the Corps in a number of ways from fundraising, recruiting, and community events. This support is not only greatly appreciated but also necessary to the success of the Corps. We encourage you to become a member and participate in the activities of the Support Committee. Without each other, both legally cannot exist. A screening process with police check will be completed before anyone can assist with New recruits are expected to wear a white dress shirt and black tie, black pants and shoes, preferably, non-attention seeking types. Please have your new cadet read the recruit hand book. Our Ontario Regiment Cadet Garrison is made up for 4 cadet units in Durham Region. They are 2525 Pickering, 76 Uxbridge, 41 Port Perry, and 1913 Oshawa. Finally, any documents on the website are considered up to date and are the official copies. Good luck and best wishes. 3 A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMANDING OFFICER Welcome to the wonderful world of Army Cadets. The world of Cadets is seemingly one of the best kept secrets. Everything you or your cadet needs is on the website, please explore it so you know where to look for important information & details. When your cadet joins our Corps they will receive their uniform (on loan) in about six weeks, it is their responsibility to maintain it. This includes washing, ironing, and polishing their boots. See the dress page of the website for details. The first Wednesday of each month is CO s parade. Please ensure your Cadet has a proper haircut and/or style. All cadets must read the units STANDING ORDERS on the Resource Page of the website. This document is the control order for 1913 Army Cadets. Please help them and ensure they understand the expectations. It is very important that you pick up your cadet(s) on time after events, as my staff must wait until the last cadet leaves the property. After spending a weekend of long hours training your child/ward, like your cadet, we want to go home too and get some time with our friends and family before heading back to the work week. Please be courteous and be early. We will make our timings unless it s a situation beyond our control, but do instruct cadets to call home with an estimated time of arrival. The Cadet Program also has a direct impact on Canadian society as a whole. Cadets have the opportunity to take part in various leadership roles throughout the program. Cadets are not, nor will they ever, be in the military as cadets. We follow a paramilitary structure and environment. There is definite value in having well-rounded, community-minded, experienced young people who are ready to assume their places as tomorrow s leaders and decision makers. Truly unique to the Cadet Program is that it offers experiences you cannot get anywhere else! The Cadet Program stimulates an interest in the Sea, Army and Air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces (CF). To this end, we offer dynamic training in a supportive and efficient environment where change is a positive and essential element. The mission of the Cadet Program is to contribute to the development and preparation of youth for the transition to adulthood, enabling them to meet the challenges of modern society, through a dynamic, community-based program. The vision of the Cadet Program is a relevant, credible and proactive youth development organization, offering the program of choice for Canada s youth, preparing them to become the leaders of tomorrow through a set of fun, challenging, well-organized and safe activities. 5 PARENT/GUARDIAN RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUND RAISING Parental support is key to the success of the Cadet Program, from car-pooling and helping out with the support and sponsoring committees to giving a word of encouragement from time to time, parents have a role to play. Getting involved One of the first questions many parents ask after registering their teenager in Cadets is How can I get involved? Within a Cadet Corps there are always many things to do and extra hands are always welcome. You ll quickly see that everyone can enjoy the Cadet program, young in age and young at heart. Parent Responsibilities Parent meetings are held periodically, in the Conference Room of the Armoury. It is very important that parents participate in these meetings; your input is welcomed and needed. In a further attempt to keep the parents well informed, the Cat s Meow Newsletter is printed every month and is also available. Flyers and instructional sheets are distributed to the Cadets as required. There is also an online calendar which has information on upcoming events. Please check their uniform and coat pockets, extra copies are available in the administration office upstairs. Parent Volunteers Always Needed We require parent volunteers to help out with a number of support activities which include (but are not limited to) cooking and preparing food (ie turkeys, roasts of beef, sandwiches etc.) transportation, supervising fund raising activities etc. Fundraising and Where Does the Money Go? The Crown (Department of National Defence) pays for and supplies the dress uniforms on loan to the Cadets, the provision of the Armoury, a small band allowance, a small training allowance, the summer camps, certain equipment, and most field exercises. This is for all the Mandatory training related expenses. The other activities, not supported by DND are covered by donations & and fundraising efforts. Other activities can be events like, movies, formal dinners, adventure based events like zip lining, white water rafting etc. Through fundraising, we can offer more of these type of experiences and opportunities. Our military band is exceptional and growing! The upkeep and repairs of the instruments alone can be staggering, let alone the purchase of new instruments (that would be actually used instruments but new to us). Our military band travels throughout the region performing in various parades and celebrations. Transportation and lunches are covered through fund raising activities. A traditional fundraiser is the selling of Army Cadet Tags (known as Tag Day). Typically, this event is held in shopping malls. Please support your Cadet in participating in this event. Spaghetti dinners and yard sales are also a few of our fundraisers. Parents are asked to volunteer their time to assist with these events. 5
