3 Chair s Corner ASC-SR hosted two events this past month. Our first dinner meeting was held on April 3, at the Partridge Inn in Augusta. The speaker was Dr. Rickey Hicks, Dean of the College of Mathematics and Science at Georgia Reagents University. Dr. Hicks gave a very interesting speech on the Challenges and Opportunities for Science Departments in the Development of the Next Great American University. The meeting was well attended and enjoyed by our section. The second event held in April was a Chemist Celebrate Earth Day (CCED) event. The local section YCC sponsored a booth at the Family Earth Day Festival in North Augusta. Over a hundred children and their parents visited the ACS booth to learn about the Wonders of Water. Volunteers did hands-on demonstrations with the kids and passed out stickers, flyers, and other goodies. I d like to give a special thanks to Sophie Meissner and Katie Heroux for organizing our dinner meeting and CCED events, respectively. I d also like to recognize and thank Andrea Bridges for agreeing to serve as the ACS-SR volunteer coordinator. Andrea is already planning some volunteer incentives for the year. Keep a look-out for her announcements regarding prizes and awards. ASC-SR is starting to wind down for the summer break but we do have one event scheduled for May. The Adopt-A-Highway cleanup will be held on May 31. Please consider coming out to volunteer. With summer approaching, ACS-SR will be taking a break from newsletters and most activities in June and July. Any special events will be publicized via during this time. The executive committee will be spending this time planning for our fall activities. Some of the events to look forward to later on this year include: our fall dinner meeting, national chemistry week, student travel awards, and our end of year banquet and awards dinner. 4 Outreach & Events Adopt-a-Highway Volunteer News ACS-SR is continuing to participate in the South Carolina Adopt-a-Highway Program. ACS-SR is committed to maintaining a one mile section of highway located in Aiken County (Whiskey Rd. near the Country Inn & Suites). Clean-up dates are currently scheduled for: May 31 August 2 November 15 Save the date for the May 31st clean up- last chance to help this spring! We meet at 9:30 AM at the Country Inn & Suites parking lot, and the clean-up will be followed by an informal social gathering, sponsored by ACS-SR. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Sophie Meissner at sophie.meissner@srnl.doe.gov or Beginning this month, we will start providing incentives for volunteer participation in ACS-SR volunteer events. During each calendar year, there will be three or four opportunities to win a valued gift card or other prize. Every three months, the ACS-SR volunteer coordinator will keep record of volunteer participation. During the following month, a name will be drawn for a winner. The volunteer who has the most participation at the end of the year will receive an additional reward. The incentives begin now. Since January, all attendance to volunteer events has been recorded. 5 YCC Thank you to all the YCC members and GRU students who volunteered at our Chemists Celebrate Earth Day booth at Family Earth Day in North Augusta, SC on April 26th. It was a beautiful day and the event was a great success with an estimated 250 public attendees! Our booth, featuring the 2014 CCED theme The Wonders of Water, offered ~100 children the opportunity to perform hands-on water-related experiments, including Magic Sand and Floating Paper Clip, while learning about hydrophobicity and surface tension. We also distributed CCED swag, including Celebrating Chemistry (an ACS-produced magazine with fun at-home experiments), earth stress balls, and honorary chemist stickers. Several parents and teachers also expressed interest in learning more about our organization and collaborating with the YCC for future events at their schools, scout troops, etc. Other vendors and organizations at Family Earth Day included the Savannah River Ecology Lab, Aiken Beekeepers, Sierra Club, Bridgestone Americas, SCE&G, Department of Natural Resources, Aiken Master Gardeners, and more. We had a lot of fun, made some great contacts, and hope to participate in this event again next year!
