1 Chapter 32 - Customs and Traditions Customs and Traditions of the Cadet Corps 1. Many present-day customs of the Canadian Forces and the CCM are traditions dating back several centuries. 2. Their historical background is often not well known and is often misunderstood by the general public, who are inclined to dismiss them as symbols of meaningless military routine. 3. Although far from complete, the information contained in this chapter is intended to outline some of those customs, which are observed by 2958 RCACC. 4. In many cases, Cadet Corps Customs and traditions will be modeled after those of the 30 Fd Reg t RCA Parade Square 1. The parade square, whether indoors or outdoors, is out of bounds when a parade is in progress. 2. It is permitted to walk across the parade square at any other time. 3. It is also permitted to conduct other training in a manner that is deemed appropriate when the parade square is not being used for Drill instruction, Parades or Ceremonial events. 4. Officers are to pay particular attention to the fact that Senior NCO s (Cadets or CF) are generally responsible for good order and discipline on the Parade Square. As such, Officers should: a. Leave Drill Instruction to Senior NCO s (Cadets or CF); b. Only assume Parade appointments when proper to do so; and c. Conduct themselves appropriately while walking around the parade square Recognition - Departure of Senior Members of the Corps 1. All cadets having served within the cadet corps and successfully completed their recruit training are entitled to receive a cadet certificate of service (Annex 34b). 2. A request shall be made to the AdmO for this certificate.

2 3. Adult staff members shall also be recognized for their contributions upon departure or retirement from the unit. 4. If funds are available a gift commensurate with the following factors shall be given to the individual: a. Length of service (to the Corps, in the CIC, in the CF, etc.); b. Individual accomplishments made while serving with the Corps; c. Contributions made towards the growth and success of the Corps; and d. Involvement in Corps activities. 5. Other individuals who have contributed to the corps (support committee, liaison personnel, League members, etc.) should also be recognized Christmas Dinner 1. The Cadet Corps shall hold an annual Christmas dinner prior to suspending its activities for the Christmas Break. 2. The purpose of the dinner is to allow the whole Corps to share a meal at the mid-point of the training year. The particulars are as follows: a. Guests, including a Guest of Honour shall be invited; b. The dinner will be set-up as a Regimental Special Guest Night; c. Dress will be either be full dress with medals or Mess Kit as determined by the CO; d. The meal will consist of a soup, main course, salad, dessert and coffee; e. The dinner will be non-denominational. However, proper CF Graces shall be said; f. No alcohol will be served. The toasts will be made with non-alcoholic beverages, (i.e. non-alcoholic wine or juice); and g. Cadets should receive an informal period of instruction prior to the meal discussing table manners, mess etiquette and the traditions of a formal dinner St. Barbara s Day 1. Annually on December 4th or the nearest training night, 2958 RCACC shall recognize our patron saint St. Barbara.

3 2. This recognition may be in the form of the ceremony of the punch or in conjunction with the annual Christmas Dinner. 3. Specific Procedures for the recognition of St. Barbara s Day are located at annex 32a Special Guest Night 1. In keeping with Artillery tradition, 2958 RCACC shall hold, annually a special guest night. 2. The purpose of the dinner is to allow the whole Corps to invite a special guest to share a meal with the unit. The particulars are as follows: a.
