COMMANDING OFFICER S WELCOME Dear Cadets and Parents, Welcome to. You are embarking on great journey where you will learn new skills, be challenged to accomplish complex goals, and be introduced to a new world of aviation. No matter why you joined the Air Cadet Programme, I am certain that you make lifelong friendships and have fun while doing it. 808 Coquitlam Squadron is the newest squadron in Canada. With your hard work and dedication, it has limitless potential. With this in mind, I ask that you took a look at your schedule and time commitments to see how cadets can fit into your life. The cadet programme involves more than just a single mandatory training night each week, it involves the occasional weekend and any extracurricular teams we have to offer. All cadets are required to attend a minimum of 60% of all mandatory training in order to successfully complete their level. These mandatory training dates include parade nights (Tuesday evening training) and ceremonial parades (Remembrance Day parade & Annual Ceremonial Review). Some teams you might be interested in include the Band, Drill, Biathlon, First Aid, Effective Speaking, and Duke of Edinburgh. These teams will often time involve a different night of the week but do not require any previous knowledge or experience. Aviation activities like gliding or familiarization flying will occur over specific weekends. We look forward to getting to know you better and seeing the successes you will accomplish. Congratulations on your first step in what is sure to be a wonderful adventure. Yours truly, C.S.W Kung Christopher Kung Commanding Officer 808 Coquitlam RCACS 3 sfsdfssdfds

EXTRA-CURRICULAR TEAMS Being a member of 808 Coquitlam RCACS has its advantages and benefits. Some of these advantages include a comprehensive option of teams that all cadets can participate in. Among the teams we have, they include Aviation (Flying) Ground School Band Biathlon Drill Duke of Edinburgh Effective Speaking First Aid Remote Control Our teams run separate from our training nights and are an excellent opportunity for the cadet to refine their knowledge and skill in their interested subject. Space is limited for all teams so cadets are encouraged to join as soon as they show interest. Like our mandatory training nights, cadets are required to attend on a regular basis. Should the cadet s attendance drop, they may be asked to leave the team. Participation in teams increases the cadet s likelihood of being selected for summer training and promotions. AIR CADET SUMMER TRAINING PROGRAM Every summer the squadron is allocated a limited amount of spots for summer training. The number of spots available each year depends on the number of cadets the squadron has on staff. Selection for the summer training positions will depend largely on the cadet s attendance throughout the year, the amount of teams the cadet participates in, as well as the recommendation the cadet receives from NCOs and Officers. Summer training occurs for 6 weeks during July and August. Due to the different duration of the courses offered, there are different intake times and number of intakes for each course. For example, the General Training Course is 2 weeks in duration and thus has 3 separate intakes for the course spanning 6 weeks, whereas, Basic Aviation is a 3 weeks in duration thus having only 2 intakes for the course. Each intake begins at a different time each year and the squadron has no control over which intake your child will be participating in. The cadet must be able to attend the entirety of the course and is only eligible for one course per summer. There are a series of courses available for cadets to participate in based on their level in the cadets program. The available courses are: 6 sfsdfssdfds
Level 1: General Training Course (2 Weeks) Basic Musician Course (3 Weeks) Level 2: Basic Drill and Ceremonial Course (3 Weeks) Basic Survival Course (3 Weeks) Basic Fitness and Sports Course (3 Weeks) Basic Aviation Course (3 Weeks) Basic Aviation Technology and Aerospace Course (3 Weeks) Basic Musician Course (3 Weeks) Pipe Band (3 Weeks) Level 3: Drill and Ceremonial Instructor Course (6 Weeks) Survival Instructor Course (6 Weeks) Fitness and Sports Instructor Course (6 Weeks) Air Rifle Marksmanship Instructor Course (6 Weeks) Advanced Aviation Course (3 Weeks) Intermediate Musician Course (6 Weeks) Advanced Musician Course (6 Weeks) Advanced Aviation Technology Course (6 Weeks) * Advanced Aerospace Course (6 Weeks) * Glider Pilot Scholarship Course (6 Weeks) * Level 4: Power Pilot Scholarship Course (7 Weeks) * Level 5: International Air Cadet Exchange (2-3 Weeks) * Staff Cadet Opportunities (7 Weeks) All courses noted with an asterisk (*) are scholarship courses. UNIFORM All cadets will be issued a complete set of uniform parts. The cadets are expected to maintain their uniforms according to dress regulations. The cadet dress regulations can be found on CATO and its associated annexes. This file can be found on our website. Each cadet will be issued a wedge, a tunic, a dress shirt, a pair of pants, a pair of boots, and associated accessories. The accessories include a tie, belt, name tag, and socks. Cadets that have outgrown or have not been measured for their uniform parts are to report the Supply Officer during break for each parade night. 7 sfsdfssdfds
COMMANDING OFFICER S (CO S) PARADES Commanding Officer s Parades are held on the first parade night of each month. These parades are held so that the squadron is able to recognize both individual and group accomplishments for the previous month. Parents are encouraged to CO s parades whenever possible as it is a great opportunity to view first-hand the successes of your cadet. Additionally, it is good opportunity to take photos of the squadron. CHAIN OF COMMAND The Cadet Programme is based on a military structure called the Chain of Command. The Chain of Command outlines the seniority of the cadets based on position and rank. It demonstrates who reports to whom in terms and is especially important for communication. Junior cadets (in Flights) report to their Flight Sergeant, who then reports to the Flight Commander, and so on up the chain. The most senior cadet is the Cadet Squadron Commander, who reports to the Officers. Cadets should follow the Chain of Command whenever they have questions, but are first encouraged to ask their peers. In emergencies and sensitive matters, a cadet does not need to follow the chain of command. For emergencies, cadets can report to whomever they encounter first. For sensitive matters (e.g. reporting another cadet bullying another cadet), cadets can report to whomever he / she trusts with the issue. Find below a visualization of the Chain of Command 8 sfsdfssdfds
PARENT VOLUNTEERS The administration of the Air Cadet program is accomplished through a partnership between the Department of National Defense (DND) and the Air Cadet League of Canada (ACLC). DND funding for optional activities is limited; therefore, a community group, service club, or parent committee sponsors each squadron. Our sponsor is the 808 Coquitlam Squadron Sponsoring Committee (808 Coquitlam SSC), which is responsible for providing facilities, financing activities, and arranging fundraising events to fund the Squadron. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend the parent information meetings held a few times a year. Parent meetings are valuable for giving you an opportunity to ask questions and for learning about the Air Cadet program, Squadron activities, cadet training, summer camps, volunteer opportunities, and much more. Meeting dates, times, and location will be announced at closing parade, by , and posted to the squadron website calendar at Volunteering at the squadron is a great way to support your cadet(s), showing your interest in their endeavors. There are many opportunities to volunteer, from driving, to helping at camp outs (Field Training Exercises [FTXs]), to serving on our Board of Directors. Parent volunteers must complete a Screening and Registration Package. To obtain this package, please visit 808cadets.com. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact an SSC Board Member on a Tuesday evening or the SSC Chairperson at chair808air@gmail.com. A list of current SSC Board Members can be found on the squadron website. REGISTRATION AND FEES Registration Fee of $200 per cadet per year is collected during registration. These funds are used to pay for a mandatory yearly Assessment Fee to the ACLC, BC Provincial Committee ($100/cadet), who provides insurance and administrative support to SSCs, and maintenance of the aircraft that are owned by the ACL. The remaining $100 is used to support training and activities at our Squadron. No cadet will be refused registration or disadvantaged in anyway because of his or her parent s / guardian s inability to pay the registration fee. All requests for registration fee payment plan or requests for full or partial hardship exemption of the registration fee must be submitted to the Chairman, chair808air@gmail.com by the parent / guardian prior to cadet registration. All communication in this regard will be kept confidential and is covered under The Air Cadet League of Canada s Privacy Policy. Individual and corporate donations are welcome and much appreciated. 808 Coquitlam Squadron Sponsoring Committee is a registered charitable organization and therefore may issue tax receipts. Many employers have charitable donation incentive programs for their 9 sfsdfssdfds
employees. Enquire with your employer if they offer such a program, and if you and our Squadron can benefit from it. Please note: Unfortunately, we cannot issue tax receipts for the registration fee / assessment. We desire that your family s experience in the air cadet program and at our Squadron is a good one, so please do not hesitate to ask questions or let us know about any concerns you may have. Please feel free to contact our Squadron Sponsoring Committee Chairman at chair808air@gmail.com with any questions you may have. CANTEEN To promote physical fitness and good nutrition, healthy snacks such as fruit snacks, juice, water, and granola bars are sold in our canteen. Cadets are encouraged to bring exact change if purchasing a snack. Items range in price from $0.25 to $1.50. We request that your cadet bring only coins or small bills (no larger than $5 bill), as we carry a small float. Note: Due to food allergies some of our cadets have, all cadets are asked NOT to bring their own snacks or drinks, except water. 10 sfsdfssdfds
