Last year we had an amazing year and the Staff and Support Hey New Cadets!! Welcome to you too!! Committee have missed all you very much. As the seasons change so do our Cadets. Greens Stars turn to Red Stars. Red Stars turn to Silver. Silver Stars turn to Gold and Gold Stars become Master Cadets. Most of the cadets went to Summer Camp and the word on the street is that it was another amazing experience. We hope that with the summer break behind us, the cadets return energized and ready to start a new training year. The Staff are eager and ready, the training plans are set. We continue to plan for the FTX s and all in all we hope to again to engage, challenge and provide our Cadets the best possible experience we can. That being said now is the time. Time to get back to work. Hold on tight Cadets. It s going to be another awesome year! 329. Fall in!! 1 Lots of new cadets have joined the Corps this year. Lets give them all a warm and wonderful welcome to the best Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps the 329. Website Info Remember cadets, make sure you update your profiles on the 329medical.com website.

2 What first-time Cadets really need to know. A lot of new Cadets asked so we re answering. First Time cadets and parents always ask. So we re taken the time to answer a few of your questions here. What is Parading? - The true Oxford definition is; Noun. 1- a public procession, especially one celebrating a special day or event: a St George s Day parade the festival began with a parade of the competitors 2- a formal march or gathering of troops for inspection or display: a military parade [mass noun]:the men massed for parade 3- a series of people or things appearing or being displayed one after the other: the parade of Hollywood celebrities who troop on to his show Simply put it is our formal way of saying that we are getting together, meeting up for one of our training nights or events. What is the purpose of Army Cadets? Army Cadets form a national organization whose purpose is to develop in youth the attributes of leadership, engaged and active citizenship and physical fitness, all within a safe environment that stimulates an interest in the army element of the Canadian Forces. Why should I join Cadets? Great Question, I guess the answer is why not? - Cadets offer you challenges, friendship and adventure! Its an opportunity to expand your own horizons, contribute to your community and make friends for life. Many former Cadets credit their participation in the program with giving them a head-start toward their successful careers. Did you know that astronaut Chris Hadfield, Olympic biathlon gold medalist Myriam Bedard and actor Jim Carrey were all Cadets in their teens? What do Cadets do? Army Cadets are teenagers who take part in activities at a Cadet Squadron within their local community. These activities are designed to help you to become more selfconfident, to develop your leadership skills, to improve your physical fitness and communication skills, and to teach you self-discipline through challenging training. Will Cadet training affect my schoolwork? Education is very important to Cadets. Cadet training is a hands-on, activity-based program that should complement your school studies. In fact, some provincial and territorial education boards accept Cadet subjects for school credits. As well, there are several scholarships available through Cadets. What do I need to join? All you need to join is an interest in the program and your parents/guardian's permission. You also have to be willing to attend regular meetings. You must be a Canadian citizen or have Landed immigrant status oh and you should be 12 years old. What will I do at weekly Parade? Some of the activities you can expect at your unit include ceremonial drill, first aid, sports, and citizenship events that support your community. We even have a music program. Occasional weekend activities or FTX s include camping and marksmanship and other activities. There will also be plenty of time to have fun and make new friends! What about summer camps? For those interested, Cadets have summer camps located across Canada. Cadets can go to camp for two to eight weeks on a variety of courses. Each camp offers a unique mixture of outdoor activities and valuable instruction. Attendance at Cadet Summer Camps is free. The Canadian Forces provide all transportation, meals, lodging and special equipment. Every Cadet attending summer camp receives a training allowance, that s right.., you re paid to go and some Senior Cadets in staff positions at camp receive a salary. What do I do at summer camp? Courses offered at Army Cadet summer camps include training in leadership, instructional techniques, music, marksmanship, summer biathlon, expedition, map & compass, camping and adventure activities, ceremonial drill, physical education, computer skills, and citizenship...and and and the list goes on and on. Are there travel opportunities? Definitely! For summer training, Cadets travel to Summer Camps located in different parts of Canada. In addition, selected Cadets go on exchange trips to countries such as the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Bermuda, Japan, Sweden, South Korea, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Scotland, Wales, Italy, Australia, Singapore, Turkey, the United States and Belgium under an international exchange program. Exchange Cadets are selected on their high standards in performance, fitness and involvement in Cadet activities. Who instructs Cadets? Cadets learn from members of the Cadet Instructors Cadre (CIC), officers who are specially trained to instruct and supervise youth. In some cases, civilian volunteers who possess special skills are called in to assist Cadet Instructors. Both the Cadet Instructors and civilian volunteers have chosen to dedicate their valuable time to helping Cadets reach their potential. Will I be expected to join the Canadian Forces? No. Cadets make absolutely no commitments regarding future military service, and are free to leave at any time. However, those who decide to join the Forces later on start out with the advantage of having learned valuable skills through the program. We re sure you have many other questions Have a look at our website or ask a staff member 2 A word from the Commanding Officer As the Commanding Officer of 329 ARMY Medical, it is my pleasure and honour to be able to work with an incredible group of youth who have so much to offer. Aside from the cadet program providing the cadets with discipline, first aid and skills they could use in the wilderness. The Army Cadets teach young people leadership and how to be good community members. 329 ARMY has a compliment of officers who make sure the cadets are having a great time and without them we would not be as successful as we are. The 329 ARMY Medical Cadet Corps has fostered a sense of volunteerism that sees members lining up to help out at the local Bluegrass festival or participating in community clean-up projects such as adopt a highway and a yearly cenotaph clean up. These fine young men and women are up and coming leaders of our respective communities. 329 ARMY Medical Cadet Corps is also a place to have fun, develop leadership, mentorship and guidance. Which is one of the reasons the local Group has grown so substantially. We have an outstanding support committee that helps us raise funds that allow me to do the things that keep the cadets engaged and excited. Thank you for your unwavering support, but above all, thank you for trusting us and allowing us the privilege of working with your children! Captain Kolinko

5 Technology and the 329 The 329 Army Medical Corps uses the most up to date technologies Why? Visibility: we can now offer people an online venue to learn more about what the Cadets do in our local community. When trying to recruit new members, or raise funds, or get the word out about a community service project; the ability to offer the website link to the public is invaluable. Credibility: Almost any serious notfor-profit organization has a web presence. In fact, as more people turn to the internet as their primary source of information, organizations are expanding their online presence from a website to a news blog, a Facebook page, a Twitter account, etc. A web presence (even if it is just a website) adds that public credibility. We have both a website and a twitter account. Current Information Source for Members: In this age of rapid information transfer, our website can accomplish that faster than physical mail and produce bulletins at a much lower cost. A combination of the website and corps notices and call arounds will usually get the information to all members as soon as it becomes available. Lowest Cost for Broadest Reach: Budgets are always looked at and for our corps the website is the most cost effective venue to advertise activities and keep that information always available. Print media may have a wider, more-instant reach, but it is usually expensive to utilize and it's value diminishes rapidly... ask yourself how long you retain your local newspaper. And now that viral social media like Facebook and Twitter are available, it is possible to out-reach printed media you betcha! So you see, we are just trying to keep with the times, save some trees, and save some of our costs as well. Visit Stay informed Call Arounds Call Arounds happen every week to keep the parents and cadets of the 329 up-to date with any changes to schedules or timings. Make sure you register on the website. We use this info to make sure we have all the appropriate contact info. A Call around is simply a recorded voice message that goes out to all members to either home or Cellular phones or both. Website for the The Website is monitored and information that we collect is not shared with anyone other than members of our Corps. You can make friends with Members of the site. There s also a CHAT box for the cadets to use and they can send messages to their other cadet friends using the internal message portal. We encourage Parents and Cadets to register on the website and check it often for updates. Online Resources for Members: Our website offers a valuable bank of online resources like Corps bulletins, brochures, public notices, forms, the list goes on and on. 5
