REGISTRATION To be eligible as a cadet, one must meet the following 4 requirements: 1. Be a legal resident of Canada Note: A legal resident of Canada is a Canadian citizen, a landed immigrant, or, the dependant of a person who is lawfully residing in Canada on a temporary basis for the purpose of education or employment. 2. Provide proof of provincial health insurance coverage or equivalent; 3. Be between the ages of Not belong to another corps or squadron; and be acceptable to the Commanding Officer (CO) of the cadet corps or squadron. There is no cost to join the program, however parents and cadets are expected to volunteer and participate in fundraising activities.

What is the Air Cadet Program All About? The aims of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets are to develop in youth the attributes of good citizenship and leadership, to promote physical fitness and to stimulate an interest in the activities of the Canadian Armed Forces. The Cadet program is run by a partnership between the Canadian Armed Forces (who provide the officers for training and funds and supplies for the mandatory training program), Air Cadet League of Canada (who provide marketing of the program and support for local and regional facilities such as gliding facilities and camps and administration of the program) and the Local Sponsoring Committee at the Squadron level (who provide parade facilities, support as requested by the officers and funding for optional activities). Further information is available at the national cadet website The Cadet program aspires to be free to youth between the ages of 12 and 18 years of age but only with significant participation from parents in fundraising campaigns and behind-the-scenes volunteer work can our Squadron provide a stimulating program for our youth. Why should I join Air Cadets? The Cadet program offers opportunities, challenges, friendship and adventure! It s an opportunity to expand horizons, contribute to the community and make friends for life. Cadets have the opportunity to participate in many activities including learning in weekly parades and training, weekend exercises, gliding, flying in small planes (called familiarization flying), sports, public speaking, leadership opportunities, range activities and the list goes on. Many former Cadets credit their participation in the program with giving them a head start toward their successful careers. Astronaut Chris Hadfield, Olympic biathlon gold medalist Myriam Bédard and actor Jim Carrey were all Cadets in their teens. What is the age of Cadets? The age range for Cadets is 12 to 18 years old and is open to both males and females. Children cannot join before their 12th birthday and must retire on their 19th birthday. What do Cadets do? Cadets take part in activities at their squadron and within their local community. On a regular parade night, Cadets will assemble in their Flights (assigned groups) for opening parade and then be released to attend Level Training classes with fellow Cadets in their same training level. Each Cadet Level (Level 1 to 5) follows a specific curriculum with learning criteria. The majority of training is delivered by senior Cadets under the direction of the Level Training Officer. Activities are designed to help Cadets to become more self-confident, to develop their leadership skills, to improve their physical fitness and communication abilities, and to teach self-discipline through challenging training. During the evening, Cadets are given a break of approximately 15 minutes for time to relax and socialize, and if desired, to purchase something from canteen.

When does Air Cadets take place? The regular cadet training year extends from the beginning of September to the end of May. Cadets are required to attend Thursday evenings from 6:15 pm to 9:30 pm. Some activities are held on weekends and other evenings during the week, but the majority of these are optional activities that the Cadet can sign up for, such as gliding days, familiarization flying days, and weekend exercises. Community service duties and fundraising activities are also scheduled on weekends. There are occasional mandatory events in addition to the Thursday training nights that take place during the year & cadets have the opportunity to apply for summer camp and training programs that occur for different periods ranging from 2 to 7 weeks in July and August. Is there any charge for Air Cadets? There is no charge to enroll in Air Cadets. However, only the compulsory part of the program is funded by the Department of Defense. Keep in mind that even though there is no charge to enroll in Air Cadets, parents and their cadets are encouraged to participate in fundraising events throughout the year such as casinos, silent auctions, bottle drives and other initiatives. This gives the squadron a sense of community, funds the training and activity programs, all non- compulsory activities (including flying opportunities, facilities and special events), and pays the rent and all expenses of the squadron. The price of being a cadet is commitment! Time Commitment Cadets are required to attend Thursday evenings from 6:30 pm 9:30 pm. Some activities are held on weekends and other evenings during the week. These are ones your cadet would sign up for, such as gliding days, familiarization flying days, weekend exercise, band, sports, etc. There will also be community service duties and fundraising activities that will happen on weekends. There are several mandatory Parades that take place throughout the year such as Remembrance Day, Battle of Britain & Annual Ceremonial Review. Other mandatory parades may be designated throughout the year. Your cadet will be advised of these well in advance of the date. Regarding the Annual Ceremonial Review (ACR): scholarship and summer camps quota are set by the attendance at ACR, therefore the Commanding Officer has implemented a policy that states: if a cadet fails to attend this parade, they will be removed from the list of eligible candidates for summer training in the next training year unless, of course, a valid excuse is presented in written form from the parent to the CO. What about the uniform? The Canadian Forces loans complete uniforms (worth about $600) to Cadets. New Cadets will receive their uniforms approximately 6 to 8 weeks after enrollment, depending on availability of uniform parts in appropriate sizes. In return, Cadets are expected to take good care of their uniform. All parts of uniforms MUST be returned in its entirety when the Cadet leaves the program. The uniform may only be worn to and from the Squadron Headquarters on parade nights, and at other events as directed by the Squadron s Officers. Cadets may request special permission from the Commanding Officer to wear their uniform on special occasions such as

for school Remembrance Day activities. Engraved name tags are provided free to cadets. If the original is lost, cadets are charged for replacements. Cadets will also receive a 538 Buffalo Blue t-shirt with the squadron logo when they have completed 3 weeks and are sized for a cadet uniform. This t-shirt is to be worn on parade until they have received their uniform. It is also to be worn at cadet volunteer functions such as bottle drives, community clean-up and other specified activities. Uniforms do not require dry cleaning and the cadet should be encouraged to wash and press their own uniform after initial instruction from their senior cadets. Fabric glue must not be used to put badges on the uniform. What about summer camps? There are a number of summer camps for Cadets that span two to seven weeks in the summer months, such as Basic, Basic Musician, introductory courses in Leadership, Instruction, Aviation, Athletics and Survival. Cadets at level three and above, depending on age, are eligible to compete for longer and more intensive programs called Scholarships. Examples of available Scholarships are Leadership, Survival, Technology, Athletic Instructor, Glider Pilot and Power Pilot and International Exchange. These scholarships range from 6 to 7 weeks in duration (with the exception of International Exchange generally 3 weeks) and range in value from $6000 to $15,000 in benefit to the Cadet, including room and board and training opportunities. Cadets away at all levels of camps are paid an allowance, to help cover any incidental costs that may be incurred (canteen, flight t-shirt, etc. ). All expenses related to travel, and special clothing required for the camp is also paid. First year Cadets are eligible to attend the General Training Course (2 weeks). Cadets are provided with application forms in December. Not all Cadets who apply for summer camps will be awarded a camp spot. Each Squadron has a quota of camp spaces allotted to them by Department of National Defense. Selection is based upon merit and participation in both mandatory and optional training activities and the recommendation of the Commanding Officer. PARADES Regular Parades The squadron parades every Thursday at Mayland Heights School, from Cadets are to arrive at the squadron at no earlier than 1815, and be formed up by 1830 for opening parade. It is during this time that attendance is taken and cadets receive their class schedules for the evening. Parents are encouraged to arrive at 2100 for closing parade to hear any important announcements or presentations. (Please note that Thursday parades are MANDATORY and that all cadets are expected to attend.)

Note: Parents/Guardians cannot leave their Cadet at the school until an officer has arrived. Please ensure that you remain with your Cadet until this time. Commanding Officer s Parade CO s Parade is a formal parade where either the CO of the squadron, or a special guest, is conducting a full ceremonial inspection of the squadron. CO s Parade happens every first Thursday of every month, replacing a regular opening parade. The timings for CO s Parades do not differ from the timings of regular parades. Cadets are expected to arrive at the squadron in full uniform for 1815, and formed up on the parade square by CO s Parade is also typically when a special presentation is to be made such as promotions and awarding qualification badges. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend the CO s Parade. ATTENDANCE Attendance is an important expectation for every cadet. It contributes to a cadet s success and is taken into consideration when nominated for an award. Attendance is taken regularly at every parade. If a cadet is going to be absent, they must notify the squadron either by phone ( ); or by (538absent@gmail.com). When reporting an absence, please leave the cadet s name, date, and reason for absence. If a cadet requires an extended absence, they must complete a leave of absence form and have it signed by the Commanding Officer. The form can be obtained from the Administration Officer. OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES Cadets who sign up for optional activities, such as gliding or range are expected to commit to the event. By signing up for an activity, it means that you are able to commit the time and effort for that activity. The staff dedicates their time and resources to plan these activities and it requires a lot of work. If there are any changes and you can longer attend the activity, please notify an officer and remove your name from the signup sheet. If you can no longer attend an event and neglect to inform an officer and remove your name from the signup sheet, it reflects poorly on a cadet s integrity. The squadron uses a merit system which monitors a cadet s commitment to the squadron. The merit is used to determine nomination for awards as well as activities such as citizenship tours. The squadron offers optional activities, most of which typically occur every Tuesday at Ernest Morrow Junior High from 1830 hours 2130 hours. These activities include, but not limited to:

Band The squadron offers a band program for musicians and music enthusiasts. All cadets are welcome to join band, regardless of musical experience, all cadets are trained with professional clinicians respective to their instrumental groups. The squadron offers instruments from all instrumental groups typical to a military band including, but not limited to: flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, snare drums and many more. Cadets may choose from any instrument of their choosing. Along with regular parades, band cadets attend practice on Tuesday evenings. Biathlon Biathlon is a competitive sport which revolves around a combination of cross country & marksmanship. The cadet runs a total of three kilometers, with intervals at the end of each kilometer where the cadet fires ten rounds at a designated target. The squadron biathlon team is open to all cadets who are interested. However, only a limited number of cadets may be selected for the team to compete against other squadrons at the local, provincial, and national level. The team currently trains several times a week at various places in the city. Colour Party The squadron colour party is a parade position which consists of flag bearers and honour guards. The flag bearers typically carry the Royal Canadian Air Cadets banner, as well as the squadron banner. On special occasions, the commander will carry the Canadian flag. The honour guards are a select group of cadets who are authorized to carry rifles on parade, at ceremonially, they are charged with guarding the flag. Cadets who wish to become a member of the colour party must try out for a position. The colour party practices every Tuesday. Drill Team The squadron drill team specializes in drill, dress & deportment. They are held to the highest of standards in personal drill, uniform standards, and professionalism. The drill team competes in annual drill competitions against other cadet units from all three branches across Calgary. The drill team is open to all cadets. However, the drill team may only comprise of 17 cadets, commander and second-in-command included. There will be tryouts for the drill team in the beginning of the year. The drill team practices every Tuesday. Effective Speaking The aim of effective speaking is to provide an opportunity for cadets to increase their selfconfidence and increase their ability to reason, organize and express ideas. Cadets participate in annual effective speaking competitions against other cadets at the local, provincial, and national level. Here are this year s topics: The 150th Anniversary of Canada s Confederation Why the Air Cadet Program is important to Canada Canada s changing role as a peace-keeper Drones progress or threat?

Environmental stewardship of Canada s waters. Women in Aero-space How do you balance your Cadet career with the rest of your life? How did Vimy Ridge contribute to Canada s recognition as a nation? Effective speaking typically occurs on Tuesdays and is open to all cadets who are interested. Mock Boards The Squadron Sponsoring Committee parent members are involved with the scholarship preparation for cadets. In January & February of each year, parents and staff will provide Mock Boards which are practice for the real Scholarship Board interviews that our Squadrons scholarship candidates will have to attend. As our cadets will be competing against other cadets across the province for a limited number of scholarships, they need all the practice they can get. Our cadets have done very well at Scholarship Boards in the past due to the practice they receive at our Mock Boards Scholarships are awarded to cadets at Level 3 or higher. Parents of cadets at all levels are encouraged to participate as volunteer judges at Mock Boards. It gives a parent a sense of what can be achieved through the Cadet program. It is a very fulfilling experience to interview these young men and women who will be Canada s leaders of the future. Duke of Edinburgh s Award This program allows Canadian Youth to work towards goals that earn them level awards (pins) within this Commonwealth sponsored challenge program. There are 4 sections, those being, Service, Skill, Physical Activity and Adventurous Journey. There are 3 awards: Bronze which can be started at age 14; Silver age 15 and Gold age 16. The whole program can be completed by age Buffalo has an adult volunteer leader that will work with the staff and direct the cadet through the program, if they choose to participate. DND encourages but provides no funding or activities towards this program. The fee for the program is $30. It is open to all citizens of the Commonwealth aged 14 or more. The D of E achievement pins are a sanctioned part of the Cadet uniform and are worn by Cadets on parade. Familiarization Flying (FAM Flying) The Air Cadet Program aims at promoting aviation and in helping youth who are interested in aviation. The Squadron Sponsoring Committee dedicates funds each year so that cadets may experience a unique opportunity to familiarize themselves with flying. The cadet has the opportunity to fly in a small aircraft with two other cadets, along with a licensed pilot who then instructs the cadets on the basics of flying such as flight controls and take offs and landings. This also presents the cadets a chance to control the aircraft in the air for a period of time. FAM flying occurs during weekends at various times during the year and is open to all cadets.

Gliding The Air Cadet Program funds its own flying program and presents cadets the opportunity to fly in a glider. Unlike FAM flying, gliders do not have engines in the aircraft. As such it is a unique opportunity and enables the cadet to experience a different form of aviation and flight. The pilots who fly these gliders are also cadets who earned their pilot s license through the program. The squadron goes gliding typically twice a year, in the beginning of the year and in the spring time. Gliding is open to all cadets and we highly encourage all cadets to attend. Ground School Ground school is a series of classes that the squadron offers for cadets who are interested in earning their wings. The squadron brings in qualified instructors and licensed pilots to teach the classes. Ground school teaches the cadets all the basics of aviation. From the principles of flight, flight theory and aviation laws, to meteorology and air navigation. Ground school teaches everything a cadet would require in their knowledge when they apply for either a glider or pilot scholarship. Ground school is open to all cadets who are interested and is encouraged. For cadets who are eligible for a flying scholarship and wish to pursue their license, ground school is mandatory. Sports & Fitness One of the aims of the Cadet Program is to promote physical fitness. Cadets participate in physical activities that aim to help a cadet s personal health and physical fitness. The squadron also has a basketball and volleyball team that participates in the annual cadet sports competition against other squadrons across the city, and southern Alberta. Occasionally, the cadets may decide to organize their own activities on Tuesdays. The activities may vary from low organized games, to sports like soccer and basketball. Both the basketball and volleyball teams are open to all cadets. Sports and fitness occurs on Tuesdays. SurvivAir SurvivAir is a competition between cadets that tests the cadets on their survival skills. Such skills include the cadets abilities to build shelters, fires, fire signals, ground to air signals, collecting food and water, marksmanship, first aid, and teamwork. The SurvivAir competition is held annually near the end of May, where teams from all over Alberta come to compete. Occasionally, there will be teams invited from British Columbia, as well as cadets from the Civil Air Patrol of the United States. Selection for team members occur as we near the competition date. All cadets are welcome to try out however only a limited number of cadets may make the team. Citizenship Tours Our Squadron organizes educational travel events known as Citizenship Tours. Many factors limit the frequency of these events and the participants. Typically, cadets who are chosen to attend these tours are based on the Cadet s performance and participation throughout the current and previous training years. In the past, the Squadron has toured Halifax, CFB Greenwood NS, CFB Cold Lake AB, CFB Moose Jaw SK and Edmonton. Citizenship Tours are totally dependent on fundraising success.

Information on upcoming Citizenship Tours will be made available to cadets well in advance to aid in the planning process. The Squadron plans and organizes at least two weekend overnight survival exercises each year. These are generally planned for locations within a three hour radius of Calgary and busing of the Cadets is included. Awards Banquet In June, we celebrate with a full sit down banquet at a location chosen by the parents and is provided free of charge to every cadet. At the banquet, a series of trophies and awards are presented to cadets for various achievements during the training year. Parents, siblings and guests are charged to cover the cost of their meal. It does not cost cadets to attend, however a commitment fee of $5 has been levied to all cadets who sign up. This levy is returned to the cadet in cash at the door. Squadron Photos Similar to school photos, the Squadron Sponsoring Committee arranges for a photographer to take individual photographs of the cadets & a large group photograph in uniform. Parents are welcome to purchase these photographs of their children. CADET EXPECTATIONS Cadets are expected to conduct themselves in a reasonable manner at all times. It offers the cadets an opportunity to learn and show self-discipline, display and earn respect, grow in maturity, and develop good citizenship. A key to aiding cadets is to exemplify the phrase: drill, dress, and deportment. This refers to a cadet s conduct at all times when at the squadron, ceremonies, and other special events. Drill The textbook definition of drill is to efficiently organize a military formation. In cadets, discipline is enhanced by drill, as it requires instant obedience to commands and synchronized completion of said commands with the others in the unit. Drill also creates uniformity among cadets on parade. Drill requires effort and self-discipline, and should be conducted properly at all times. Such times include marching on the parade square, conducting all drill movements properly, and not moving when at attention. Drill reflects a cadet s personal self-discipline, effort, and motivation. Dress Dress refers to the Air Cadet Uniform, and the cadet s personal appearance. It is expected from all cadets to maintain a standard of care and wear, as per regulations, to their uniform; as well as maintaining their personal appearance when in uniform at all times. This ranges from

polishing boots and ironing uniforms, to shaving and maintaining hair as per regulations. The senior cadets will instruct junior cadets on proper care and maintenance of the Air Cadet Uniform, as well as personal appearance. However, the responsibility ultimately befalls the cadet to care for themselves and their issued uniform. A cadet s uniform reflects their personal effort and motivation, responsibility and pride of being a cadet. Deportment Deportment is a cadet s conduct in acting with courtesy, professionalism, and respect at all times. It is one of the primary aims of the Cadet Program to develop good citizenship in youth. Good citizenship revolves around the acts of common courtesy to others, a level of developed maturity and professional conduct, and respect to peers, superiors, and subordinates. A way of showing respect in the military is by addressing the rank of one s superior. It includes saluting officers and addressing them respectively as sir/ma am. This also includes addressing senior cadets respective to their rank. A cadet s deportment reflects their actions and behavior, their discipline, growth in maturity, and respect. PARTICIPATION Fundraising Activities All cadets are expected to participate in fundraising activities. These activities are meant to bring in additional funds to the squadron for the benefit of the cadets. The squadron is only allocated a certain amount of funding each year. Therefore by fundraising, the squadron could afford many new things for the cadets. From small things like squadron clothing, to citizenship tours to CFB Cold Lake or CFB Greenwood in Nova Scotia. The more funds the squadron generates, the more fun stuff we get to do. The costs associated with running our Squadron are raised through fundraising initiatives. With these costs reaching $80,000+ per year, we must be very aggressive in the number and types of fundraising that we do. It may seem at times that all we do is fundraise! If every family involved in Cadets were to participate in the majority of our yearly initiatives, we may be able to reduce the number we must conduct. Our Annual Nick Barron Memorial Dinner, plus a minimum of 4 other selected fundraisers are what we use to sustain the Squadron throughout the year. We select fundraising events that raise money from the public rather than from parents themselves. While this does mean you pay less cash, it usually means we need sweat equity volunteers to make things happen. In addition to helping raise funds, these activities are a great way to meet other parents and have some fun. We have been blessed with a great volunteer participation in the past and have never resorted to forcing parents to attend any fundraising functions. New parents often find the Cadet program so different than other youth programs that they truly want to participate in their child s growth.

Nick Barron Memorial Dinner This is one of our major fundraisers of the year. It is an evening adult only event held in memory of fellow 538 Air Cadet Nick Barron. Parents are encouraged to help sell tickets to the event and are encouraged to bring additional adult family members and friends to a fun evening. The event organizer varies the format, but it typically includes a silent auction where diverse assortments of prizes are available for bidding, a buffet dinner and some fun to finish off the evening. The fun themed night provides an opportunity for parents to mingle in a fun and exciting atmosphere. All parents are asked to canvass businesses and companies asking for donations for this event and letters of introduction are available. The event this year is held on November 5, Casino 538 SSC receives a casino approximately every 18 months. These casinos usually bring in over $75,000. A Casino requires between volunteers over 2 days in order to be successful. We will continue to apply for casinos, which are awarded to non-profit groups. Funds raised through casinos have limitations on how these funds are used but they are easy events to run. The next casino will be held Nov 8 & 9, 2016 at Cash Casino (on Blackfoot). Bottle Drive A Bottle Drive is held annually in June at the Forest Lawn Legion from 9:00 am 3:00 pm rain or shine. Screened parents will be needed to drive groups of cadets on collection routes. If a parent is unable to attend, you can drop off your cadet and return later for pick up. Please come for some or all of the time, even if you can only make part of the day. Don t forget to bring your own bottles, cans, juice boxes etc. when you arrive in the morning. Make sure you wear your cadet t-shirt so the community knows who we are. Lunch will be provided for cadets and volunteers. Canteen The parents operate a canteen, which sells pop, snack foods and small items to cadets during their break time about 8:00 pm each Thursday night. This canteen makes a modest profit, but it is intended more as a convenience than a fundraiser. SQUADRON INFORMATION The Commanding Officer (CO) or Squadron Sponsoring Committee (SSC) members are available to answer questions about the Squadron and/or squadron activities. Please call or anytime or approach us on parade nights. Contact information is given below. To leave a message at the squadron you can call directly at However, this phone is only manned on Tuesday evenings. Please leave a message and we will get back to you as soon as possible. You can also our general account at: 538air@gmail.com

Chain of Command On the military side, there are defined procedures and policies for communication referred to as Chain of Command. These policies identify who you should call with your questions or concerns. As a general rule, parents wishing to discuss issues pertaining to their cadet should contact the Commanding Officer (CO) only, unless otherwise directed. On the Squadron Sponsoring Committee side, you may communicate with anyone at any time. If you feel the issue is sensitive, please contact the Chair of the SSC for advice. Calendar 538 Buffalo Squadron maintains a Calendar that combines cadet and parent based activities into one comprehensive calendar. The dates are widely susceptible to change, and so, parents are encouraged to check the website to view the most up to date version. 538 Buffalo Squadron Sponsoring Committee The Squadron Sponsoring Committee (SSC) is a not-for-profit charity established to run the business of supporting 538 Squadron. It is not part of the Canadian Forces. It consists of parents of Cadets enrolled in our Squadron. The SSC generates funds to meet the Squadron s many financial needs. At present, the annual cost to run our Squadron is about $80,000 each year. This is raised through donations and fundraising events such as casinos, silent auctions, bottle drives and other activities. In addition, the committee organizes volunteers for non-cadet based activities. We support the Squadron by: Running the Canteen during parade nights Assisting Cadets in preparation for Scholarship Boards Providing volunteers for Cadet activities as directed by the CO Purchasing and maintaining band equipment Maintaining the Squadron headquarters Sponsoring Citizenship Tours Advertising and promoting the Squadron and the Cadet program Providing facilities for optional training events that may include catering SSC meetings are open to all parents and are held once a month on a Thursday night at 7:00 pm in the library of Mayland Heights School. Meeting dates will be announced in the calendar. The meetings generally last about 1.5 hours and cover the general operation of the Squadron. We strongly encourage all parents to attend these meetings as a wealth of information is shared about Cadet functions, the progress being made toward special activities and initiatives, date or schedule changes, and opportunities to

ask questions and gain a better understanding of the program. Please consider sending at least one parent/guardian to each meeting to take notes. The SSC, as a registered charity, must annually elect an executive board of directors. These individuals work on behalf of all parents in roles defined by the SSC s By-laws. The executive works in partnership with the military side of the squadron represented by the Commanding Officer and staff, and the Air Cadet League. Any parent is welcome to drop by and meet with the executive Tuesdays and Thursdays. As well, parents are encouraged to run for a position at the Annual General Meeting, typically held in May of each year. Although the efforts of the Committee seem large, many volunteer parents share it. We strive to make most fundraisers into fun events for parents and Cadets alike. Considering the opportunities provided to your Cadet at no cost, the effort is a small one. The 538 SSC firmly believes that we are supporting the best cause in Alberta the Air Cadets of 538 Squadron!!! Please come out and see what you re missing.
