4 IPFC Tom Thayer Greetings, fellow Auxiliarists. A great meeting is planned for Thursday, May 3, 2018 at 1930 (7:30 P.M.) at our Base at the Marine Safety Center at Spanish River Park. Rod Dilman, FSO-PA has arranged for John Cangialosi from the National Hurricane Center to talk about hurricanes. It should be interesting and guests are welcome. Please remember that we have numerous activities planned for National Safe Boating Week, which starts on May 19, Ask how you can participate. Please make every effort to attend on May 3. It will be a busy and interesting night. Uniforms would be great!!! The greater part of our happiness or misery depends upon our disposition, and not our circumstances. -Martha Washington- Jane Novak Member Training FSO-MT@cgauxboca.org Crew training continues with 5 motivated members, Duncan Ferguson, Bob Litzenberger, Rafael Baez, David Sabbagh, and Chris Fernandez from Flotilla 54. Trainees have completed training on first aid and survival, team coordination, seamanship and boat nomenclature, communications, and a swim test. They have also completed navigation and charting exercises. All that is left for this group of trainees is to get out on the water and practice their boat handing skills. Crew training is done on a rotating schedule so that you can join at any time. Interested? Let me know and we ll get you started.

5 Online training provides many options for members to gain skills and knowledge. Currently there is an IMSEP (Introduction to Marine Safety and Environmental Protection) course being given on April By the time you see this, the online course will be over, however each session will be recorded. You will be able to access the recordings which will provide you with the online training portion. Flotilla 54 (Boynton Beach) is offering two seminars that are open to our members: GPS and Knots. The dates are as follows: GPS seminars 7/21, 10/13. Knots seminars: 5/12, 8/11, 11/10. All seminars will start at 9 AM. If you are interested, please contact Shari Forman (birdlover5@bellsouth.net) or Duncan Ferguson Vessel Examination FSO-VE@cgauxboca.org The Northerners are going home but the locals are out and ready for summer. Vessel Safety Checks continue at a steady pace. The VE team will soon have a new member. Rafael Baez recently completed his five supervised VSCs and is waiting for confirmation as the new Vessel Examiner and will soon be ready for action. Thank you Rafael and welcome. Things are moving forward nicely. VEs please keep account of the vessels inspected by the month as I will call on you from time to time for updates. Vessel Examiners please remember to get the word out to the boaters of the Kidde fire extinguisher recall. Many boaters are not aware of the recall. Safe boating week will soon be here. May 19th and 20th Flotilla 3-6 will have a tent at the Silver Palm Park slip at the Palmetto Park bridge. The VEs will be handing out pertinent safety literature from 09:00 to 15:00 on Saturday and Sunday. Pass by and help us spread the safety word. Thank you and keep up the good work.

7 Jim Goldasich Operations April 22, 2018 was the most recent Earth Day and thousands of people around the world dedicated the day to environmental stuardship in one way or another. The US Coast Guard and US Coast Guard Auxiliary are committed to environmental protection of our waterways and oceans along with the wildlife that inhabit them. One of the most disasterous materials to impact our waters is plastic in all of its forms. Plastic is inherently slow to degrade and as such will be around for hundreds and even thousands of years beyond its manufacture and use. Discarded plastics often find their way into the waters and eventually into the oceans where they may be mistaken for food (see photograph). Once ingested, the plastic bag (in this case) will move to the digestive tract and become lodged there where it will kill the animal. This unfortunate scenario is carried out many times each day in all areas of the world. This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-NC-SA As Auxiliarists, we can make a difference by pointing out these facts during our many contacts with the public. If you see plastic bags in the vessel during a VE tell the person to make sure it does not enter the water. To highlight the importance of properly caring for refuse on a vessel there are different thresholds that must be crossed to obtain a response for Law Enforcement. For example, on land littering citations may be given if one deposits refuse onto the gound but on the water littering citations may be given if anyone deposits, or causes to be deposited, refuse. So if a bag blows out of a boat during high speeed operations, it is still littering and the operator can be cited. The important elements that should be taken from this example are that all forms of pollution that enters the waters we love so much results in untold levels of damage, some immediate and some continuing for many years. We can use our positions to remind the public of the need to keep our waterways clean for ourselves and those that will come in the future. 8 Andrea Rutherfoord Public Education Thank you to the instructors for our April 7 ABS class: Fred Gless, Rob Lambie, Jim Goldasich, and Michael Brody. Now that we are again using our classroom at the base, we had a relaxing day with our 6 students. Congratulations to Michael Brody, who completed his instructor certification. I appreciate all the instructors, aids, public affairs staff, program visitors, vessel examiners, and anyone who has referred students to the classes! Our next class is May 12, which could be attended by a group of Young Marines. Look for the gold Public Education brochure for the full schedule. Tour Guides at Station Ft. Lauderdale: Wednesday, March 21 was a busy morning at Station Ft. Lauderdale when about 100 children from Charles Drew Elementary School arrived for a station tour. Four Auxiliarists, including me, David Scott (F38), Bill Carney (F32), and Peter Paige (F32), teamed up with 10 active duty personnel to bring the groups to tour the Gannet, the LE boat, one of the 45 boats, and the armory. The kids were lively and loved taking pictures and pressing the horns and sirens on the boats, as well as a heaving ball contest. As the season continues, I encourage other Auxiliarists to join this cadre of assistant tour guides. Tours are usually scheduled well in advance, and guides can sign up to fit their schedules. Let me know if you are interested. NS BW

9 Barry Ruchowitz Finance Dues collection for 2019 will start in August. Based on the March meeting vote, dues are $65 (up from $60). Some background: Of the $65, the Flotilla keeps $22, National receives $24, the District receives $9, and the Division receives $10 (up from $5). Starting in August, please bring your dues to a meeting, or send them to me at: Mr. B. Ruchowitz FSO-FN Via Siena Boynton Beach, FL Also, if you have changed your mailing address, address, or phone number, please point it out. This would be a good time to notify us of the change so that it can be updated in the system. Todd Greenstein FSO-CM NO REPORT Ron Dillman FSO-PA fso-pa@cgauxboca.org NO REPORT

10 Brent Davis FSO-MS This month, let s look at Marine Safety classes that are readily available to you. There are two classes that are designed to provide a baseline level of training for those interested in the Marine Safety program. These courses include: The Good Mate: This course was developed by the Ocean Conservancy and is designed to encourage ocean and waterway conservation by boaters. The course material is available on this website by clicking on the link above. The exam is available on the National Testing Center. Personal Observation: The Good Mate class will take you about 2 to 3 hours to complete and the test is open book (open computer). The material is very well written, is interesting and you will learn a lot about marine conservation and techniques. I would strongly recommend that you take this course, if you have not already done so. National Test Center Website (Good Mate Test) Introduction to Marine Safety and Environmental Protection (IMSEP): This course is designed to provide an extensive background in the history, policies, laws and regulations pertaining to the Marine Safety and Environmental Protection missions. It is the Auxiliary equivalent of the 12-week Coast Guard Marine Science Technician A-School. The course is available on this website by clicking on the link above. The exam is available on the National Testing Center. Personal Observation: The IMSEP class is an advanced course developed by the Coast Guard/Auxiliary to provide in-depth skills and regulatory information concerning environment protection and safety. This course will take in excess of 20 hours of reading and test preparation. The test draws upon multiple sources and is open book (open computer) and quite difficult. I used 2 computers: one to take the test and one to search for answers in the materials. However, if you are up to the challenge, satisfactory completion will provide you 2 points toward your AUXOP device. NOTE: An alternative method for taking this class was just created. It is a Webinar based online class that may provide an easier option to prepare for the test. If you choose this approach, the class will be via a Webinar, but the test will be the same. National Testing Center Website (MSEP Test) If you have any questions about these classes, please contact me at: captainbrent@bellsouth.net

The PV program is designed to provide the boating public with the most current boating safety information and to establish a point of contact for boaters interested in boating safety. Businesses such as marine dealers, marine stores, dive shops, marinas, libraries, nautical stores, etc. in turn, can provide their customers with boating safety literature, information on Courtesy Vessel Safety Checks, and the location of public education courses. Monthly visitations provide an informative interaction between the USCG Auxiliary, businesses and the boating public. If you are interested in becoming a Public Visitor representing USCG Auxiliary 3-6, please contact me for assistance.

Once a year, check the expiration date on your member ID card. The card is valid for 5 years. When it s time to get a new card, you initiate the process. If it s within a few months of expiration, or has already expired: 1. Tell the FC or VFC that you need a renewed ID card. They can help you get started. 2. Have your picture taken in the office (red background, uniform shirt). Zoom in so only your head with the red background is showing. 3. In an , send the picture to the FC. Also provide the current information on the back of your card: Height (inches), weight, eye color, hair color, blood type, date of birth, and ID number. The FC will submit your photo and information into the system. In a few weeks, the new card will be sent to the FC, who will have it at meetings. Bring your old card to swap out for the new card. Note: If you present an expired card at the gate of a military base, you will not be allowed entry and your card might even be confiscated.
