Hawthorne, Sheriff Telephone: ccso@co.chambers.tx.us Sheriff Brian Hawthorne reports that on Sunday, May 24, 2015, at approximately 2pm the Chambers County 911 operator received a call of a possible drowning at the Sylvan Beach Park in La Porte. The Chambers County Sheriff s Office-Marine Division responded to assist in the search for 40 year old Carlos Guillermo Torres-Gonzalez from Pasadena, Texas. It was reported by witnesses that Carlos dove in the waters to help his 13 year old nephew, who had wondered beyond the safety swimming markers and started to have problems swimming against the current. 5 April 18, 2015 Sheriff Brian C. Hawthorne and the Chambers County Sheriff s Office were proud to be a part of the Texas General Land Office Adopt-A-Beach program. It was a tremendous success. Over 45 volunteers assisted in the removal of over two tons of debris along the Chambers County coast. The volunteers consisted of members of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Texas Parks and Wildlife, members of the Go Green Club of Anahuac High School, and other volunteers from the surrounding communities. Sheriff Hawthorne stated that he looks forward to the Sheriff s Office continuing their participation in this event. Some odd items found during the cleanup included a dishwasher door, a recliner, shag carpeting, and a can containing waterproof paint. The Texas General Land Office Adopt-A-Beach program is one of the most successful volunteer efforts in the nation. The goal of Texas General Land Office's Adopt-A-Beach program is to not only remove trash from Texas beaches and waterways but to also increase public awareness of the problems of marine debris and beach litter. As volunteers clean up beaches they record data to learn more about the causes of marine debris and to help mitigate pollution along Texas' 367 miles of coastline. For additional information on the next cleanup visit You may also call the Texas General Land Office toll free at TXCOAST. See photos attached.
