1 The Yardarm Bay of Quinte Squadron, Quinte District COMMANDERS MESSAGE April Edition Inside this Issue 1 Commanders Message 2 Membership Report Membership Note 3 Living With The Natural World Ship s Store 4 Training News 5 Merit Marks and Citations 6 In Memoriam For Sale 7 Rendezvous 8 Squadron Bridge Insert AGM As the winter comes to a close and spring is quickly approaching and our Fall-Winter classes finish up, I would like to thank all of those who made all these courses so successful, both the instructors and the students. We look forward to seeing you all again next session. As some of you are aware, I had the opportunity this winter to apply the knowledge I have gathered from courses over the years. John Boor aboard "Mahseer", invited me to join him in the Bahamas for 6 days with a plan to move the boat south. We sat and studied weather data, tide /current data every day. The leg from Freeport to Great Harbour Cay in the Berry Islands was 67 NM in a straight line, this made planning a priority. The winds lacked the consistency required to set out on this first leg, they were 15 to 20 Knots clocking 360 degrees in a 24 hr. period. The seas were not to bad with 4 to 6 ft swells, as we did go out sailing to test the waters on the Friday. As of this Yardarm I am coming to the end of my first year as Commander, I have found this to be a very enjoyable experience. The opportunity to attend the National conference, district meetings and other CPS events has been a privilege and honour, representing all of our members. Meeting interesting members, from a variety of walks of life, all of whom have an interest ensuring our waterways are safe and enjoyable has been great. The Spring Graduation and AGM will be held on May 7, 2009 at the Bay of Quinte Yacht Club. On this night we acknowledge the time commitments of all those who volunteered during this past year as well as longer service awards. Allow me to extend my personal invitation to everyone to come out and bear witness to the accomplishments of the members of this squadron. Dale Holland Commander 1
2 April 2009 By the time you receive this newsletter, you should have received your invoice for membership renewal from Headquarters. If you have not received it by early April, there could be a mailing error, so please notify me. Please mail your payment directly to Headquarters. You can also pay direct by MasterCard, Visa and Internet. All of our Squadron Bridge officers, instructors and proctors are dedicated volunteers whose knowledge and hard work make our local waterways safer for you to enjoy. We need your support! With our busy lifestyles, many of us cannot contribute time for volunteer positions, but you can support your local Squadron by renewing your membership. We are a non-profit volunteer organization. Renewing your membership assists us in promoting SAFE BOATING THROUGH EDUCATION. It also qualifies you to receive the many membership benefits available to you. Only members in good standing are permitted to fly the CPS flag. Please take the time to read all of the information sent to you with your invoice. We appreciate your support! Cdr Dale Holland d_holland_01@sympatico.ca PLEASE NOTE! An error at CPS Headquarters in the billing of Bay of Quinte Squadron Dues. All members were undercharged. A Single membership was $3.00 short and a Family membership was $4.50 short. CPS Headquarters and Bay of Quinte Squadron apologizes for this inconvenience to our Members. P/Cdr. Don Quibell AP 2 OUR THOUGHTS Special thoughts go out to our members who are experiencing poor health due to surgery, cancer treatments and other disabilities and illnesses. With respect no names are mentioned and we hope that the coming year will see a great improvement in your health.
3 LIVING WITH THE NATURAL WORLD The Yardarm Living With the Natural World Correction in last issue - 2) (IPZ) last line should read "There are two main types of intake protection zones - one at Belleville and one serving a small community of 20 families at Point Anne" - for further info contact Keith Taylor - tel ext our apologies. Going Native In the Bay of Quinte area over many years the amount of natural habitat has been greatly reduced by conversion of these areas to other land uses. The result of this loss combined with the invasion of exotic or non-native species has provided less space for our own native plant species to expand. Nature species have many benefits. They allow wildlife to identify immediately sources of food and shelter. This is vital for the survival of birds and other wild life. A diversity of native species attracts a great variety of wild life throughout the year. Native plants are adapted to local climate and environmental conditions as opposed to exotic species unconditioned to the moisture and temperature fluctuations of our area. Native plants are attractive and an enhancement to any landscape or garden area. Many have blooms and berries that are appealing to people and wild life alike. Mature plants can reclaim a degraded natural habitat - check soil type, moisture and available sunlight to make a good decision about which plants, shrubs etc. would best suit this spot of land. Our own species of trees, etc. can stabilize soil, prevent erosions and create habitat along waterways. We also have regional bio diversity. Certain geographic areas have their own flora and fauna which are particularly native to that district, and because they have co-existed over many years there is a natural dependence on each other for their survival. Appropriate lists of our own shrubs, plants etc. and where to plant them may be had by calling Quinte Conservation at ext Olive M. Root Environmental Officer SHIP S STORE Birthday Shopping? Just call Maxine Holland, and she will be pleased to help you with your purchase. We carry many items in stock and orders can often be filled within the week. Maxine can be reached at You can also shop by surfing to the CPS website- and clicking on the Ship s Store. 3

6 April 2009 IN MEMORIAM In early February John Binnie passed away. John was a great supporter of Bay of Quinte Squadron. He took the Boating Course in 1991 and four other courses following Boating. John and Anita were very active in the local boating scene on their boat Sundowner. The last few years were spent at Prinyer s Cove where anyone who knew John and Anita, and even strangers, always received a helping hand and warm welcome on arrival. John was a Past Commodore of the Bay of Quinte Yacht Club and both were great contributors to the club. Our condolences go out to Anita and family. Rest in peace John! A donation has been made by the Squadron to the CPS Foundation and John s name will be inscribed on the CPS Memorial Log forever. P/Cdr.
