1 The MEDIC Dispatch News From The Front Line April 29, 2013 Performance Pay Update Mecklenburg EMS Agency Dates to Remember: April 29 th This Week: Top Call & Unsung Hero Nominations Intersection Accidents 2 3 Patient Reunion 4 Construction Update: Statesville Road April May Training Schedule Medic Calendar 8 GREAT NEWS! We are continuing to tracking well including patient satisfaction scores! Let s keep up the OUTSTANDING WORK by encouraging all employees to be mindful of the following key points: The group performance pay program is heavily tied to overall patient satisfaction. Teamwork between EMS Personnel is the #1 driver of overall patient satisfaction; if it takes a big hit, overall patient satisfaction isn t going to be far behind. Regardless of the priority level, a patient still judges the level of service they receive. Treat your partner and other first responders on scene with the same level of respect and teamwork it does matter. Be mindful of what you say and how you react to everyone in the room. Each patient may very well end up on the other end of one of our patient satisfaction surveys. Remember to stay focused and provide excellent patient care on every call. It makes a HUGE difference! There are still many more patient satisfaction scores to be conducted. Your actions can positively or negatively influence the final results of this new tracking period. Thank you everyone for your hard work and let s continue to stay focused! 1

3 Intersection Accidents In recent months Medic has seen a significant increase in intersection collisions in both emergency traffic and non-emergency traffic with a total of seven since September The cost of these collisions will total more than $110,000 and will have our trucks out of service for weeks. In an effort to prevent further collisions, please be mindful of the following important points: Any intersection controlled by a stop sign, yield sign, yellow traffic light or red traffic light requires a complete stop by the emergency vehicle. Do not rely on warning devices to clear traffic. Do not assume that oncoming drivers or pedestrians will follow the traffic laws, hear the sirens or see the lights. Scan the intersection for possible hazards (right turns on red, pedestrians, vehicles traveling fast, etc.) and make sure to proceed slowly (especially after any vehicle that hinders view). Begin to slow down well before reaching the intersection and cover the brake pedal with the driver's foot, continue to scan in four directions (left, right, front, back). ALWAYS use both sirens in YELP mode and the air horns when approaching an intersection. Scan the intersection for possible passing options (pass on right, left, wait, etc.). Avoid using the opposing lane of traffic if at all possible. Establish eye contact with other vehicle drivers; have your partner communicate when all is clear; then reconfirm when all other vehicles are stopped. Proceed one lane of traffic at a time, treating each lane as a separate intersection. There are differences between the sirens you have on the trucks. One siren uses only one speaker while the other uses two speakers. With that said, Medic is asking that everyone use the two speaker sirens (center console) and the horn when approaching, entering, and exiting the intersection even if you have the green light. The Agency is looking into other options to help reduce he number of intersection collisions. Please send your suggestions to Risk and Safety Specialist Amy Johnson at amyj@medic911.com. Your feedback is welcomed and greatly appreciated. 3

4 Patient Reunion Medic celebrated a patient reunion last Thursday, April 25 th at Post 100. Joe Yarcso wrote into Medic s website commending the crew who treated him when he had a heart attack in February Their professionalism and care amazed me, he said. Mr. Yarcso was only six weeks away from being married when he picked up a box at work in Charlotte and started experiencing chest pain. Paramedic Crew Chief Lester Bailey and EMT-Basic Kelly Flynn worked quickly to identify the STEMI and rush Mr. Yarcso to the cath lab. The total phone to lesion time was just under 48 minutes, an incredible achievement! Paramedic Crew Chief Lester Bailey is pictured with STEMI survivor Joe Yarcso, his new wife Monica and EMT-Basic Kelly Flynn. Please join the Medic Dispatch in congratulating Lester, Kelly and Telecommunicator Morgan Kettles on their success. Congratulations! Medic would like to congratulate the newest class of EMT-Basics for their completion of the EMT Academy. Family members were invited to see the newest members of the Medic family be awarded their badges in a ceremony on Monday, April 22 nd. The class of 11 EMTs is said to have been one of the best and brightest in recent memory, and one that sets the bar very high for those to come in the future. Please join the Dispatch in welcoming the newest members of the Medic family and wishing them luck as they begin their FTO time. 5 Construction Update: Statesville Road Widening Project The City of Charlotte is continuing in its efforts to widen Statesville Road from two lanes to four. Employees are asked to make note of the following important changes that will affect access to Building #1 and Building #2 of Post 100: Access to Hutchinson McDonald Road from Statesville Road will be closed within a month for approximately one month (exact start date to be announced soon). Shortly after the close of Hutchinson McDonald, front entrances and exits to Post 100 will be closed but not at the same time. Construction will also take place toward the Learning & Development end of Post 100 within the next 30 days (exact start date to be announced soon). As a result, employees will lose the ability to park near this end of Post 100. The final result of the construction process will be an additional entrance onto Hutchinson McDonald Road from Post 100. No plans for water/electrical/sewer interruptions have been communicated at this time. Please be on the lookout for exact construction start dates for Post 100 and Hutchinson McDonald Road. Contact Operations Manager Bryan Edwards at bryane@medic911.com for questions about the ongoing Statesville Road Widening Project.
