8 Region 11 Mark of Excellence Awards winners announced in San Diego 5/2/2017 INDIANAPOLIS The Society of Professional Journalists recognizes the best collegiate journalism in Region 11 with 2016 Mark of Excellence Awards winners. SPJ s Region 11 comprises Arizona, California and Nevada. Honorees received award certificates the weekend of April 28 at the Region 11 Conference. First-place winners will compete at the national level among other regional MOE winners from the 12 SPJ regions. National winners will be notified in the late spring and will be recognized at the Excellence in Journalism conference in Anaheim, California. MOE Awards entries are judged by professionals with at least three years of journalism experience. Judges were directed to choose entries they felt were among the best in student journalism. If no entry rose to the level of excellence, no award was given. Any category not listed has no winner. School divisions are based on student enrollment, including both graduate and undergraduate: Large schools have at least 10,000 students and small schools have 9,999 or fewer students. The list below details all Region 11 winners. This list reflects the spelling and titles submitted in the award entries. 9 "Fighting the Fakers" SPJ/LA Presents a Panel on Media Literacy May 17 at 7 p.m. "Fake news" is an accusation leveled almost daily by pundits and politicians, while conspicuous factchecking has become a mainstay of political coverage. Public confidence in the press has fallen to single digits. And Facebook is gearing up efforts to fight "information operations" designed to "distort political sentiment." How can the average reader sidestep spin and sort out the truth? Identify what's left out of a story? What are media outlets doing to fight back? What's the long-term impact on the free press? Join our panelists for a discussion on media literacy in an age of instant and endless information, followed by Q&A. Panelists: Jim Newton is a veteran journalist who spent 25 years at the Los Angeles Times. Jim has authored three critically acclaimed and best-selling biographies. Evan George is the managing producer for public radio station KCRW's "To the Point." Kelly Whitney, director of integrated media for NBC4, oversees the station's digital news coverage and social media strategy.
