2 Importance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Given the nature of our work, Medic personnel can be exposed to many potentially transferable conditions. That is why proper utilization of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and thorough clean-up is so critical post care. One such condition that has impacted Medic personnel recently is scabies. What is Scabies? Scabies is a very itchy skin condition that is caused by tiny mites that burrow into an individual s skin. Scabies is known to spread through prolonged skin-to-skin contact and/or contact with the clothing, bed linens or towels of someone who already has scabies. Please note that shaking hands will not cause one to contract scabies. Symptoms Rash with tiny blisters or sores Intense Itching (especially at night) The onset of scabies usually occurs at the webs of fingers, folds under the arms, breasts and/or other private areas. How to Prevent Scabies Proper Use of PPE Employees are strongly encouraged to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and adhere to the PPE protocol when administering patient care. When conducting a physical or patient assessment, employees must be aware of skin abnormalities and utilize full protective gear including, but not limited to: gloves, gowns, face protection and/or any other protective gear you feel necessary. Keep Your Area Clean Please be sure to keep your area (including the interior of the ambulance) clean at all times; thoroughly cleaning and wiping down any area that has patient contact in between each transport. Effective cleanliness will prevent the spread or onset of any risk of exposure. Wash Laundry in Hot Soapy Water Including clothing, bed sheets and towels. What to Do in the Event of Post Exposure When a patient is identified at any point in time as a potential carrier of scabies, please be sure to report it to your direct supervisor IMMEDIATELY! All Medic equipment (including non-disposable equipment, stretchers and the unit itself) will then be decontaminated by professional, licensed experts trained to deal with this type of situation. Please remember to protect yourself at all times! For questions about the use of PPE, please contact Risk & Safety Specialist Amy Johnson at amyj@medic911.com or For questions about scabies and/or potential symptoms, please contact Occupational Health Nurse Claudia Tetenbaum at claudiat@medic911.com or or contact your primary healthcare physician. 2
