From Oct. 18 to Oct. 19, Rangers traned wth SRT n dfferent combat scenaros preparng for the upcomng Exercse Actve Shed VIII, an annua batera exercse parng U.S. and Japanese forces. Marnes from the Provost Marsha s Offce Speca Reacton Team and Rangers from the Japan Ground Sef-Defense Force s 46th Infantry Regment used the ndoor poo to condton and practce tactcs empoyed n a waterborne assaut. There are three ways Rangers penetrate nto an enemy area: overcomng rough terran, rappeng from a hecopter and an amphbous attack, sad JGSDF 2nd Lt. Kazuhro Yamachka, 46th Infantry Regment Ranger patoon eader. The tranng s very sgnfcant for the (thrd) purpose, he added. Ths s an mportant way of nftratng enemy terrtory. After swmmng severa aps and gettng comfortabe n the water, the wet warrors pared up and practced hodng ther breath whe submerged for ncreasng amounts of tme, some astng over one mnute. For Lance Cp. Esteban L. Pata, PMO mtary poceman and natve of Madera, Caf., breath contro was a key eement n competng the day s tranng. For ther next task the Marnes and Rangers, armed wth rubber M-16s, patroed the shaow end of the poo whe mantanng ow vsbty. Upon Yamachka s command, the servce members woud dsappear underwater and senty pop back up wth ony the upper haf of ther faces and rfes exposed. The fna porton of the day s tranng conssted of famarzaton wth fppers and snorkes as we as dvng technques. After a esson on the proper usage of the equpment, the servce members swam aps and retreved a rubber M-16 submerged 15 feet underwater n the poo s deep end. They had two dfferent modes of snorkes, sad Lance Cp. Francsco Munz, PMO mtary poceman and Seagraves, Texas, natve. One was a newer mode, and t amost sucks the ar out of you, so t took some gettng used to. (The JGSDF) are hard chargers, he added. They re obvousy good to go n the water. Though the Rangers and Marnes have dfferent mssons, the sks honed and camaradere forged durng the tranng w ensure a good workng and persona reatonshp. Lance Cp. Noah S. The Department of Defense wde nformatve campagn educates partcpants through oca demonstratons and compettons about dfferent energy and money-savng tactcs to be used n homes and workpaces here. The money was used to pay for better equpment... that woud use ess power and utmatey save more money. To promote the contest and educate at the same tme, Rdey has coordnated a number of events, sheddng ght on the ssue. We hosted a fed trp for M.C. Perry Hgh Schoo Monday to Yana Power Pant, sad Rdey. The kds had a reay educatng experence, earnng usefu tps on savng power that they can appy at home. Rdey coordnates mutpe promotona events, ncudng a fve-kometer run, to reach out to Iwakun s athetc crowd about the ssue. Takanar Kaneda, Provost Marsha s Offce securty guard, says t s a very productve way for Iwakun members to earn about the campagn. At the range, spouses were taken to the ISMT (Indoor Smuaton Marksmanshp Traner) where they tested ther coordnaton on the M-9 psto smuator. Though the weapons ddn t fre ve rounds, they amed, recoed and sounded ke the rea thng. Many were surprsed to fnd httng back wasn t as easy as smpy pontng and squeezng the trgger. Jame M. Henderson, a natve of Pensacoa, Fa., shouders an M-16 servce rfe at the Indoor Sma-Arms Range durng Jane Wayne Day Oct. 17. The day s desgned to gve the wves a fee for the range of actvtes ther husbands are nvoved n on a day bass and the sk necessary to compete them. Ths s my frst mtary experence and my frst Jane Wayne Day, so t s an eye-opener, sad Nhung T. Etter, wfe of 1st Lt. Ke Etter and a natve of Memphs, Tenn. I guess I ve had a chance to see the physca sde of (my husband s job), the tranng part, and not just the admnstratve stuff. The day began as the ades donned fak jackets and Kevar hemets for a rde n a 7-ton truck from Crossroads Ma to MALS- 12 headquarters. There they spt nto two group and headed to the Indoor Sma-Arms Range and Tactca Operatona Fght Traner (TOFT). It was very ntense, sad Bre McGeachy, wfe of Chef Warrant Offcer James B. McGeachy. I defntey have a heathy respect for beng abe to tran, to do somethng and do t we. If you get a meda for (shootng), you ve defntey earned t. At the TOFT, keepng a fghter jet n the ar was somethng the ades found to be smary dffcut. Surrounded by an array of ghts, buttons and gauges whe sttng n the cockpt of a F/A-18 smuator, severa partcpants got a crash course n Pot 101. 9 The Crce Just Got Bgger by Sgt. D. J. Hercher Contrbutng wrter Beng a roe mode and eader s nothng new to any Marne Corps non-commssoned offcer. However, as a young Marne prvate frst cass, my crce of responsbty was mcrocosmc compared to the crce of responsbty I have now, and wth more rank comes more responsbty the crce just keeps gettng bgger and bgger wth tme. Reazng the weghtness of ths new promoton and after sttng n neary two days of casses and beng shoveed nformaton by the pound, I paused momentary and asked mysef, How am I gong to remember a ths? Am I ready to be a Staff NCO? W I ve up to and exceed the expectatons of my eadershp? W my actons as a Staff NCO honor the egacy of those before me? After a, t s a whoe new word or s t? Beng one of the 37 sergeants aboard Marne Corps Ar Staton Iwakun who were recenty seected nto the staff noncommssoned offcer ranks, I found mysef sttng n the Staff NCO Indoctrnaton Course here askng mysef, Am I ready? Hosted by MCAS Iwakun s senor ensted eadershp, ths year marked the 2nd year the new staff sergeant seects were sat down n a forma settng and gven the toos needed to hep us sharpen the edges of our eadershp sks so that when we make the transton from NCO to SNCO we are comfortabe and confdent n our abtes. For me, fe has been a whrwnd ever snce the day I saw my name on that SNCO MarAdmn 581/07, as I am sure s competey norma. The exctement of beng seected, the nfux of congratuatory e-mas and phone cas s overwhemng. But I remember one e-ma n partcuar from a Marne I do not know. The e-ma read, Great job, ths s a great credt to you as the seecton board has not seected you for promoton based on past performance, but based on exhbted potenta to become a great SNCO. Rememberng ths e-ma, my anxety qucky subsded. After a, ths s what we as Marnes do aready. We take care of each other. The SNCO ndoc was just a remnder, rather a refresher to say, Hey, these are the toos and resources avaabe to you as a eader of Marnes. That s when t ccked. It s not about me or f I thnk I m ready. If the Marne Corps seected me, then the Marne Corps s teng me you re ready. Much of the nformaton taught compemented the Sergeant s Course, coverng subjects such as eadershp, mentorshp, fnanca management, core vaues, sexua harassment, communcaton wth your Marnes, but t was taught from a perspectve of how we as new Staff NCOs can be the cornerstone for our Marnes when they need hep. After a, that s mosty what SNCOs are probem sovers. Ask not what the Corps can do for you, but what you can do to make the Corps better. I nstructors dd remnd us though not to fa nto the trap that many Marnes are guty of, takng the tme to take care of our Marnes but forgettng to take care of ourseves and our careers. Ths was addressed by not ony the ecture method but aso by conductng a gunnery sergeant pane, a master sergeant/frst sergeant pane and a master gunnery sergeant/sergeants major pane where Marnes coud st down wth each pane and ask whatever came to mnd. Comng from a broad spectrum of mtary occupatona specates (MOS), the questons asked were dfferent, whch kept the cass both nterestng and nformatve. The course aso gave us the added beneft of networkng wth counterparts from other MOSs. In addton to the varous casses, some ssues see bgger, page 10 9
10 10 bgger, from page 9 currenty pagung the ar staton were aso taked about, ssues that drecty mpact how cvans outsde the Marne Corps vew us. We were smpy remnded to read and take heed the words on our SNCO creed. That when we fnd ourseves wakng down the streets of Iwakun, or any street n any cty, to remember we are Unted States Marne Corps staff noncommssoned offcers, and wth that tte we are hed to hgher standards and must uphod ourseves as such. To be proud of who we are and keep ourseves and our feow Marnes accountabe to the vaues of a U.S. Marne. I congratuate a the Marnes who were recenty nducted nto the staff noncommssoned offcers ranks and chaenge you to preserve the egacy of our Marne Corps. To strve to become great eaders, mentors, and most mportanty, to carry the Marne Corps through the next decade or two before the torch s passed on. Hercher s the producton chef at Combat Camera here.

The annua festva hosted an openng parade, tradtonastye dance performances, a downtown bazaar of souvenrs and good eats, and partcpaton from unformed staton members. A 900-yen cab rde down Route 188 to the Fuj Grand Ma put festva goers n a front-row seat for the 10 a.m. openng ceremony and brass band parade that kcked off the festva. The movements are mpressve because t seems they are very controed, sad Ando Hrotaka, festva goer and Iwakun natve, whe observng the demonstraton. They seem very powerfu and yet we traned. In the surroundng areas of the stage were dfferent food stands seng oca dshes for agreeabe prces. There s a ot of food out here to get your hands on, sad Hernandez. 13 H&HS shuts down MAG-12 n annua Fa Cassc by Lance Cp. Noah S. The game was one n a seres of spankngs H&HS has devered snce 1992, MAG-12 wnnng ony three of the past 16 match ups. Interceptons proved to be the chnk n MAG-12 s armor as the Ready Group strugged to overcome H&HS s artght defense n the frst haf. Runnng back Esteban Ramrez began the H&HS assaut when he ntercepted the ba at MAG-12 s 20-yard-ne, and severa pays ater quarterback Mcah Parsons qucky ran t n for the game s frst touchdown. That ntercepton just turned up our voume, sad H&HS wdeout Jason Brown, an Indanapos, Ind., natve. After the ntercepton our defense reay stepped up and shut them down. MAG-12 s next possesson was once agan cut short when Rcky Hnes, H&HS defensve back, ntercepted the ba wth fve mnutes eft n the haf and sprnted 40 yards for the touchdown, puttng them up The onsaught contnued as H&HS s Steven Guess demorazed the Ready Group wth yet another ntercepton. Foowng a steady drve down the fed, a short pass to H&HS tght end Erc May set the score at 27-0 for haftme wth seconds eft on the cock. Down but not out, MAG-12 knew they had to muster some bg pays n order to overcome the four-touchdown defct. Durng the haf, I tod them that f we coud stop (H&HS) and score we woud defntey put the stake n ther heart, sad MAG-12 coach Roand Hyacnthe. The frst haf we were overconfdent and (H&HS) dd score a ot on us, but when they saw us come out n the second haf t reay put them on ther hees and gave them the fear of us comng back to take the ba game. Lance Cp. Noah S. The morae went up hgh at that pont, sad Cooey, a natve of Detrot. We started producng ponts and reay usng our offense. MAG-12 kept up the momentum wth another ntercepton and touchdown by Cooey, puttng them ony 10 ponts behnd H&HS at Ther efforts were too tte, too ate however, as H&HS managed to stave off the Ready Group for the remander of the game. We weren t expectng to do everythng we dd n the frst haf because a ot of the frst haf was attrbuted to turnovers on (MAG- 12 s) part, sad Derrck Hart, H&HS nebacker. But we just knew we coud hod out wth the ead we d but. There was no way they coud outscore us n the second haf. Though the game was marked by an endess stream of trash tak, there was no ove ost as everyone waked away sportsmen, happy for the opportunty to come and represent ther unt. It s a frendy rvary. We re a brothers and ssters n the servce, Hart added. Ths just shows we can come together on a unted front and do anythng sports are no dfferent. 16 Landng Support Marnes provde outpost wth vta suppes by Cp. Wayne Edmston 2nd Marne Logstcs Group Is t worth the tme and rsk? If there s rsk, how can we mtgate t? Ths queston s asked of battefed commanders before every msson. Ths stuaton s no dfferent. The rsk: The roads of Iraq are ong and sometmes mprovsed exposve devce aden. If a commander can thnk of a safer and more effectve way, the Marnes of 2nd Marne Logstcs Group (Forward) w fnd t and execute. In the case of Combat Outpost Tmberwof, a remote ocaton very dffcut to get to by road, the sky s the perfect devery method. The mtgaton: Hecopter ft msson. However, the andng support specasts of Combat Logstcs Battaon 4 don t strategze, they execute. That means gettng the adrenane rush of havng a 73,000-pound arcraft fyng just 6 to 8 feet above ther head as they connect vta suppes to the bottom of the hoverng behemoth. In the case of Tmberwof, t can take more than a day of drvng to arrve there and about a day to return. Sendng t va hecopter saves tme, effort and possby ves. It takes a whe for a convoy to do t, but for us to do t takes about 30 mnutes, sad Sgt. Roy A. Guterrez, the commander of the hecopter support team and Bronx, N.Y., natve. We ressupy them so they can stay n the fght. Before they can begn connectng the suppes, there s a ong process of preparaton. In addton to vsuay and physcay nspectng the sngs and nets to ensure a secure oad, the Marnes must coordnate wth the hecopter squadron transportng the suppes to the outpost. Ths requres a cear understandng of when the oad w be fted and how heavy t s. Ony then can they perform a ft, expaned Cp. Benjamn R. Fores, the noncommssoned offcer n charge of the hecopter support team and Mssoua, Mont., natve. see atc, page 17 Cp. Benjamn R. Fores gudes n a CH-53D Sea Staon hecopter n preparaton for a suppy ft. The andng support Marnes wth Combat Logstcs Battaon 4 ensure equpment s safey oaded underneath the hecopter before t fes to ts destnaton. Cp. Wayne Edmston 16
17 ATC, from pg. 16 The andng support Marnes must gude the nbound hecopter and brace themseves for the 150 me per hour wnd that gushes past as they connect a groundng wre to a hook dangng from the overhead arcraft. The ground, as he s caed, s the frst payer n a seres of quck actons n the hurrcane-ke condtons. Havng a (hecopter) rght above your head s a rea rush, Fores contnued. But even n the mdst of a ths, Fores sad the 300,000 vots of statc eectrcty runnng through the hook and hurrcaneke wnds puts one concern above a ese. Safety s the number one thng underneath the brd, Fores sad. You have to keep a constant eye on what s gong on and make sure nothng happens to your Marnes. Knowng the ft s n the ar s the best part. Guterrez sad. When everythng s sad and done, watchng the (hecopter) fy away. Guterrez then anayzed hs Marnes performance, ookng for ways to mprove. They dd a good job today, Guterrez expaned. Good safety a around and everythng went as panned. There are a few thngs we can tghten up, but we competed the msson and that s what counts. For these Marnes, the satsfacton es n knowng that one convoy s reeved of havng to make the ong trp to COP Tmberwof. A haf hour fght n exchange for a day of drvng: msson executed, msson compete. Once t s grounded, a Marne connects the oad and yes a command to cear everyone away from the bottom of the hecopter, duckng dangng whees and dodgng whrng rotor bades as they rush from the andng zone. They do ths whe watchng the oad to make sure the egs of the sng stay tght and the oad ooks ke a compact cube. For many of the Marnes, gettng underneath the actua hecopter s ther favorte part. But not for Guterrez, he prefers the end of the ft. A group of Marnes watch as a CH-53D Sea Staon hecopter fes nbound to pck up a oad of suppes. The andng support Marnes wth Combat Logstcs Battaon 4 ensure vta suppes get out to unts at varous combat outposts. Combat outposts ke COP Tmberwof rey heavy on hecopters to arft vta suppes to ther poston. Cp. Wayne Edmston 17
