The Duty Officer during their period is responsible to the First Lieutenant for: Opening the deck by 1845hrs to ensure the ship is correctly rigged for colours. Ensuring that the ships timetable is adhered to at all times unless told otherwise by the First Lieutenant or Commanding Officer. To ensure the ships log is correctly filled in. The cadets on board must be correct and checked by 1920hrs and the ships log must be checked and signed by the Duty Officer at the end of Deck Night. Organisation and Supervision of all Duty Personnel (Duty Roster). General Discipline, particularly among cadets not under the control or supervision of another officer, i.e. during stand easy. Carry out all Ceremonial duties necessary for the running of the deck, including colours, prayers and sunset parade. Ensure that all Routine Orders, Duty Orders and Standing Orders are followed. Inform the Commanding Officer and First Lieutenant of any visitors, parents or visiting officers.

3 Divisional Officers Roles A divisional officer will be in charge of a complete division (Port or Starboard). The divisional officer is the link between the command team and the CADETS and will normally hold the rank of 3 rd Officer. You re responsible for: The divisional officer is directly responsible to the First Lieutenant for the well-being of a defined division of the ship, its rating and officers. Divisional Discipline and complaints. To assist Leading Seaman s, Watch Officers and Watches on their duties and roles. To arrange cadets WATCH meetings for cadets to make suggestions and voice their opinion on the ship. Arrangements are made at Officers meetings and NOT on the evening of a deck night. Watch Officers Roles A watch officer will be in charge of their assigned watch (Port 1 / 2 or Starboard 1 / 2). The watch officer is the link between the divisional officer and the CADETS and will normally hold the rank of Petty Officer / 4 th Officer Officer. You re responsible for: The watch officer is directly responsible to the divisional officer for the well-being of a defined watch of the ship and the cadets. Watch Discipline and complaints. To assist the Leading Seaman, and Leader Cadet on their duties and roles. To arrange cadet WATCH meetings for cadets to make suggestions and voice their opinion on the ship. Arrangements are made at Officers meetings and NOT on the evening of a deck night. Leading Seaman The Leading Seaman is responsible to the Watch Officer and Petty Officer for: 1. Organising the watch for Colours and Sunset Parade. 2. Assist the Divisional Officer with the smooth running of the Division. 3. Looking after your cadets in your Watch. Leading Seaman s Commands Before Colours and Sunset parade, know who is your right hand marker. (ALS). When preparing for Colours / Sunset, Duty Officer will say Markers Fall In The Leading Seaman and the right hand marker will fall into their watch. They will both stand at ease facing the front. Duty Officer will say Hands Fall In The rest of the watch will fall in on the right hand marker and stand at ease.

4 Example Leading Seaman Right Hand Marker Hands When the duty officer says Hands Fall In the Leading Seaman will come to attention then about turn so they re now facing their watch. The Leading Seaman is in charge of their watch, but may need assistance from their Watch Officer. They will arrange the cadets in height order, tallest on their right, down to the smallest on their left. When they have their watch in height order and they are standing at ease, the Leading Seaman can begin giving their commands. Commands Are ~ means pause. Starboard 1 ~ atten ~ tion Starboard 1 ~ Right ~ Dress Starboard 1 ~ Eyes ~ Front Starboard 1 ~ Stand at ~ Ease The watch officer and Leading Seaman will help any of the cadets who are struggling with their drill movements. The Leading Seaman will then turn around (facing the front) and stand at ease. Duty Officer will say Ships Company Attention Officers Fall In Watch Officer will report to you. Salute You Say; Starboard 1 (numbering 4) ready for (Colours) Sir / Ma am Depending on how many in your division. Count yourself Either Colours or Sunset and Prayers Watch Officer will say Carry On You Say; Aye Aye Sir / Ma am Leading Seaman will then salute turn around and say to their watch; Starboard 1 ~ Stand at ~ Ease Leading Seaman will turn around and stand at ease.

5 Duty Pipe Officers entitled to pipes The side The inspecting officer, at formal inspections. All VIP s as directed by the commanding officer. All officers above 1 st Officer. All unit commanding officers. The duty pipe is responsible for: Piping stand easy / hands to classes when told by the Duty Officer. Piping the carry on at the appropriate time. Control of the piping party. Colours / Sunset Routine Just before colours commences, Duty Officer will ensure that all ceremonial equipment are in place and Duty Personnel have been assigned to relevant ceremonial tasks. Colours will commence at 1900hrs and shouldn t take any longer than 15mins. Sunset will commence at 2040hrs which leaves enough time to stow away equipment before leaving time. Stand easy commences at 2000hrs and finishes at 2015hrs. When colours and sunset routine are taking place, Duty Officer will be correctly dressed, smart and setting the example to the cadets. Commands are said to a moderate speed and clearly for everyone to hear them. When colour party are lowering the colours all officers will salute the colours when in Full Uniform. If the cadets are unsure on what to do in raising / lowering the colours the DUTY OFFICER will help them. It is your job to make sure the colours are being hoist the correct way up. The colours must NOT touch the floor. Duty Officer after time will be expected to know the ceremonial routine off by heart, and be able to perform the routine without any aided help. 7 Quartermaster and Messenger Duties The quartermaster is in charge of the gangway at all times, under the direction of the Duty Officer of the day. The Q.M is to be alert to all that is going on in the ship and must ensure that the gangway is never left unmanned. He/she must record all events in the Ships Log. The Quartermaster and Messengers duties include the following:- - Pay correct marks of respect to all officers and visitors who come onboard or go ashore, (piping the side and/or hand salutes as appropriate) - Inform the Duty Officer of any visitor wishing to come onboard or go ashore. The visitor should be asked to sign the ships log - Visitors who are NTC officer or cadets are to be asked to show their Identity Cards, and then invited to sign the ships log - Ring the Ships Bell to mark the passage of time as appropriate - General Alarm (Fire) you will take with you to the Emergency Station, the ships log and attendance book. You will stand with the Duty Officer and give him/her the attendance book - Maintain a close liaison with the Duty Officer and keep them informed at all times The quartermaster should present the completed log to the Duty Officer for signature after completion of rounds, and then stowed away. Quartermaster As Quartermaster you will be the first person a visitor will see, therefore you must ensure that you are always correctly dress, smart and respectful at all times. You will arrive on deck by 1845hrs and ensure the Quarterdeck is clean and tidy. The Quartermaster will be responsible to the Duty Officer for: 1. Making sure you have a Pen Clock or Watch Log Sheets 2. At no time will you leave your desk (except in an emergency), use your messenger to run messages ask your messenger to get your tuck for you. 3. In the event of an Emergency you will collect the Log Sheets and leave the deck calmly with the Messenger and walk quickly to the emergency point (outside the front, beside the car park). 4. Collect Watch Cards from all cadets as they arrive on deck. 5. Ensure the ships log is correctly filled in. This includes getting Officers, Petty Officers, Registered Instructors, Committee Members and Visitors to sign the Ships Log. ***AT NO TIME SHOULD THE SHIPS LOG BE DRAWN UPON***

8 6. You are responsible for guarding the ship this means that you do not let anybody on the deck without prior authorisation or authorisation from the duty officer. 7. You will stand to attention whenever an Officer or Visitor comes on deck. 8. You will salute any Ships Officers as they enter or leave the deck. 9. With a Visiting Officer you will salute them as they walk to your desk to sign the ships log. 10. You will ask all visitors for proof of Identification. IF IN DOUBT CALL FOR THE DUTY OFFICER. 11. Inform the Duty Officer of ALL visitors; He / She will then inform the Commanding Officer or 1 st Lieutenant. 12. Keep the gangway clear at all times. 13. Ensure the correct Bells are rung correctly and at the correct times. TIME BELLS Ensure that the Duty Officer Signs the Ships Log at the end of the Deck Night. Messenger As Messenger you will be one of the first cadets a visitor will see, therefore you must ensure that you are always correctly dressed, smart and respectful at all times. The Messenger will arrive on deck at 1845hrs. The Messenger will be responsible to the Quartermaster for: Assisting the Quartermaster in all their duties. You will carry any messages for the Quartermaster. You will not leave the Quarterdeck unless told to do so by the Quartermaster.
