2 The Crow s Nest USCG Auxiliary Flotilla January 2015 FRO M THE HELM Flotilla Com m ander Com m ents Let me start by saying, I appreciate all your support by electing me Flotilla Commander. Needless to say, this is a very daunting and challenging position and if done correctly will require the support of ALL Flotilla members. It will be the members that, with a team effort will make become the finest flotilla it once was. We need and require more active participation in all areas. I realize that this may be difficult for some, due to their schedules; however, if just a little effort is put forward it could make a big difference. To quote a phrase, Ask not, what Your Flotilla can do for you, Ask what you can do for your Flotilla We need to remember we joined one of the finest volunteer organizations in our great country, and in today s stressful times we need to do more and have a sense of accomplishment and by doing so, gain the respect of our Coast Guard Station Georgetown members. We have a fine staff of experienced FSO s as well as Division Officers who have carried the load for Many Years. However, they need more participation and support by others. I have several projects Which I will be working on in the next several months and hope you all will consider joining in. I would appreciate any and all recommendations, suggestions and input you may have to improve our Flotilla. Please call, or better still just stop over and let s talk. However, the very first one will be, to have our new Sr. Chief attend one of our meetings and let s get introduced, and begin some interaction and help support our Station Coast Guard members. 3 The Crow s Nest USCG Auxiliary Flotilla January 2015 Flotilla Meeting Wednesday, December 3, 2014 Meeting called to order by Rick Bankert, Flotilla Commander at 1900 at CG Station Georgetown. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Rick Bankert and Karl Gettmann gave the Invocation. A motion to approve the minutes of the November meeting was made by John Murphy and seconded by Chuck Budnick. The motion was passed. Finance Report: Rick Bankert gave the finance report for Jim Mills, FSO-FN. USCG Comments: BM2 Jason Rieling reported that the QE session at Station Georgetown went very well and all the candidates passed. If anyone needs help with operations training next year he would be very happy to help. He wished everyone to enjoy the holidays and be safe. Rick Bankert presented Jason with a Certificate of Appreciation signed by everyone at the meeting for his assistance in Rick also presented a framed picture from Flotilla 12-4 to Jason. Flotilla Commander Comments: Rick Bankert, Flotilla Commander, thanked everyone for making his job easier. He reported that Jim Mills had heel surgery for bone spurs and will have knee surgery in the next two weeks. Ed Wozniak s wife Natalie had knee surgery and is in Waccamaw Community Hospital. (A get well card for Natalie was passed around for signatures.) Vice Flotilla Comments: None Flotilla Staff Officer Reports: FSO-IS Sue Hastings passed out updated activity report and member roster. FSO-PA Bill Unger reported that 12-4 was using the trailer and Coastie for Christmas parades in Murrells Inlet on 12/6 and Surfside Beach on 12/13. Any members that would like to participate, please let Tommy Timberlake, FC 12-4, know. FSO-PV Karl Gettmann has listings of all Program Dealers and will distribute to Program Visitors to select coverage. Also he has a listing of current literature and there about 14 pamphlets to use. He will get with Karen Hollar and have bins set up in the storage room. Chuck Budnick stated that there are several children s brochures we should also have on hand. FSO-PE Rick Bankert stated that Vito Giardina, FSO-PE is planning an ABS course for January 24 at Coast Guard Station Georgetown. Chuck Budnick brought up program to take Coastie into the Schools for PE. He stated that it will be impossible to bring into Horry County schools because of programming. Rick Bankert stated that Boating/Water safety is geared to the 2 nd Grade in Georgetown County and that we may be able to set up program there. He asked Chuck to get with Vito Giardina. It would have to be about a 15 minute presentation. FSO-VE Kerry Williams was not at meeting but Sue Hastings brought up that the change to Grading for Types of Life Jackets going into effect. The life jackets would no longer have Type 1/2/3/4/5 but will say USCG Approved. Old Business: The December Social was canceled because of problems. Rick brought pizzas to the December meeting for our social event. New Business: None Page 3

4 Awards: Rick passed out copy of the CG Unit Commendation Award that the USCG Auxiliary received for activity from 2009 through Each member was eligible. He also gave Bill Unger his Crew Recertification. Rick passed out Certificates of Appreciation to 2014 FSOs. Rick presented Forrest Meiere the Commandant s Letter of Commendation for his work as an Instructor with the AUXSCE program. Final Comments: Chuck Budnick stated that when on patrol you should split the time to do training for QE signoffs on each patrol. Also should check ATONS for discrepancies. Question was asked of Jason about the Buoy they found. He reported that it was #1 Buoy from Charleston and was found 6 miles off Shore of Pawleys Island. Rick reminded members that the Division Change of Watch will be coming up January 17 at Litchfield. Deadline for hotel reservations is December 12. 5 FLOTILLA STAFF OFFICER REPORTS Information Services - Sue Hastings, FSO-IS The REYR function will be run on 12 January. Most in are in good standing. If you have any missing missions for 2014, please get them to me ASAP. Materials Karin Hollar, FSO-MA No materials were ordered during the month of December. As we are now in the new year, it is a good time to take a look at your needs for the upcoming spring. By placing an order for materials early in the season stock outs are more unlikely. If you have stamps on hand take an inventory of what you have and what you presently need. Postage stamps are expensive and we are limited as to what can be ordered. Please notify me by if you need stamps, envelopes, or materials. Try to give some lead time for deliveries. Member Training Reggie Hollar, FSO-MT Nothing to report on member training for December. Cold weather during our winter months presents an excellent opportunity for members who want to hone their skills in tasks that don't require being outside. For members who are involved in operations it is a good time to practice Nav Rules, Tying Knots and Studying the Crew and Coxswain requirements manual. Members can visit the training sites to study and qualify for Vessel Examiners, Program Visitors, Instructor, and other opportunities. It is also an excellent time to go on line and complete the required training for members and newly enrolled members. Take advantage of the winter months to sit in front of the fire place with a hot cup of cider. Before we know it spring will come and we will want to be outside. Operations Hap James, FSO-OP One PATON patrol in December, otherwise no activity. There are some changes for 2015 in Operations and Navigation Services. Bill Unger will cover the NS updates.
