6 A. INTRODUCTION There are three main sources of financial aid for students who are planning to continue on to postsecondary education or training: 1. SCHOLARSHIPS are offered to students of high academic and technical achievement. They may or may not require written exams. Criteria will also include leadership, creativity, community and school involvement, potential, citizenship, etc. Applications are available on-line or in the counselling centre. 2. BURSARIES are offered on the basis of student financial need, achievement, and other requirements. 3. CANADA STUDENT LOANS, BC STUDENT LOANS AND BC GRANTS These loans and grants are accessed through a single application process. Eligibility is based on need and other criteria. Applications and details about Student Aid BC are available at: B. DISTRICT/AUTHORITY SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS District/Authority Scholarships recognize graduating BC students for excellence in their chosen areas of interest or strength. These scholarships are intended to help students pursue postsecondary education. The Ministry will allocate 5500 scholarships pro rated to schools based on their September 30th Grade 12 enrolments. Winners receive a $1250 voucher that can be used towards postsecondary education tuition. To win a scholarship, a student must apply using the Group 1 application form and identifying the focus area to be considered: Meet the following basic eligibility requirements: o Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (landed immigrant) at the time of registration in the school year for which the scholarship is awarded; o Must be a BC resident o Must be a Highland student in grade 12. Meet criteria determined by the local scholarship committee, which requires a student to demonstrate outstanding achievement in any of the following focus areas: o Indigenous Languages and Culture, demonstrated at school or in the community o Fine Arts (e.g., Visual Arts, Dance, Drama, Music) o Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies (e.g., Business Ed, Technology Ed, Home Economics, Information Communication Technology) o Physical Activity (e.g., Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics, not limited to Physical Education) o International Languages from the International Languages Curriculum or External Assessments, including AP and IB courses o Community Service (Volunteer Activity), which includes awareness of local, global, and cultural issues o Technical and Trades Training (e.g., Carpentry, Automotive, Mechanics, Cook Training) Fulfill the BC graduation requirements of either the 2004 Graduation Program or the Adult Graduation Program by August 31st of the student s graduating year. 4

7 C. SECONDARY SCHOOL APPRENTICESHIP SCHOLARSHIP Available to students who participate in the Secondary School Apprenticeship Program and meet selected criteria. D. LOCAL BURSARIES AND SCHOLARSHIPS Group I Recipients are chosen by the Highland Bursary Committee. Applications, the steps in the process and the list of Bursaries and Scholarships are with this booklet. The Group I application form is used. Group II Recipients are chosen by local donor organizations. The applications and the steps in the process are with this booklet. The Group II application form is used. (A few exceptions are noted in the bursary description.) Group III Recipients are chosen by local donor organizations. Each organization has its own unique application form, different requirements, and different timelines. Applications are available in the Counselling Centre. Students are responsible for researching these opportunities on their own. E. NATIONAL AND PROVINCIAL AWARDS Group IV All recipients are chosen by the donor associations, clubs, corporations, societies, special interest groups, unions, and organizations, etc. Deadlines vary across the calendar year. Specific criteria and special affiliations are often necessary. Many, but definitely not all, applications are available in the Counselling Centre. Students are responsible for researching these opportunities on their own and have been informed of their availability throughout the school year. Listings are also available on line at F. 8 GETTING READY TO APPLY STEPS One letter of reference i) from a teacher or ii) from a member of the community or iii) employer Type a letter of introduction: i) introduce yourself ii) explain your post-secondary plans iii) summarize your interests, activities, involvements, accomplishments etc. iv) comment on your financial circumstances (if appropriate) v) closing comment thanking committee for considering your application Go to the main office for copies of your transcript Optional: Include your resume or Scholarship resume. This may be added to the application packages for Group I and II. HOW TO APPLY GROUP I STEPS 1. Complete the front side of the Group I application form (at the back of this booklet). 2. Read the description of each bursary and scholarship in Group I. Make note of the ones for which you meet the criteria. 3. On the back side of the Group 1 application form, put a in the box next to the title of the bursary/scholarship for which you want to be considered. 4. Staple your application package together in this order: a) the Group I application form b) a copy of your letter of introduction addressed to the Highland Bursary Committee c) one copy of your reference letter d) a copy of your transcript e) scholarship resume optional 5. Submit the stapled package to the Counselling Centre by: Thursday, March 15, 2018 no later than 3:30. LATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED PAST THIS DATE 6

9 HOW TO APPLY GROUP II STEPS 1. Complete the Group II application form (at the back of this booklet), but do NOT fill in the name of the Bursary/Scholarship or organization at the top. 2. Read the descriptions of all Group II Bursaries and Scholarships. 3. Determine to how many you will apply for. 4. Make the appropriate number of copies of your completed Group II application form. 5. For each Group II Bursary/Scholarship you are applying to, complete one of the Group II application forms by writing the name of the organization or bursary/scholarship at the top. 6. Edit your original Letter of Introduction, creating a copy for each individual organization. (ie. Addressed to the organization and properly edited) 7. Make the appropriate number of copies of your letters of reference, transcripts, etc. 8. Create an application package for each organization. 9. Staple each application package together in this order; a) Group II application form with organization or bursary title filled in at the top b) Special application form (if applicable see bursary description/counselling centre) c) Letter of Introduction (edited) d) Letter of reference (copied) e) A copy of your transcript f) (Optional) resume or scholarship resume Submit the application packages to the Highland Counselling Centre by: Thursday, March 15, 2018 no later than 3:30. 11 ADAM GILMOUR MEMORIAL BURSARY Adam was a Grade 12 student who died tragically the day before his graduation ceremony in June A bursary has been established in his name to be presented annually to a Highland student. The recipient should be a student intending to continue their education at a trade school or at the college level. AMOUNT: $ ALEX SALMON MEMORIAL AWARD Alex s career aspirations were in mechanical engineering or computer sciences. He loved music. He loved sports activities with an emphasis on fun and fitness. Most of all, he loved his friends and family. Alex was known for his generosity, loyalty, good humour and the way he made people feel better. He looked for the good in others and respected himself and others. In a Grade 11 psychology assignment he wrote: I always look out for my friends and they can count on me. In keeping with Alex s love of life, this award comes with sincere wishes for a full and happy life. AMOUNT: $1, ANDY S AUTO CENTER BURSARY Edmund Kaupe Memorial Andy s Auto Centre will provide a bursary to a student planning to pursue a post-secondary education in the automotive field. Proof of enrolment and tuition paid to a post-secondary institution is required prior to funds being awarded AMOUNT: $ ARTHUR & PHYLLIS RAMSELL BURSARY This bursary is provided from a fund established by Arthur and Phyllis Ramsell and administered by the Comox Valley Community Foundation. The recipient MUST be pursuing a career in the field of health care. The Ramsells are interested in supporting higher education, firstly in the area of nursing, and secondly in general health care. AMOUNT: $1, BERNARD TARLING FOUNDER S BURSARIES (Comox Masonic Lodge No.188) Comox Masonic Lodge is pleased to be providing these bursaries to young men and women who are highly motivated and possess a strong desire to achieve greater skills. Each of the two bursaries will be awarded to graduating students from Highland Secondary School who will be attending post-secondary studies in the Trades Vocations. Selection will be based on financial need, personal application and academic achievement. AMOUNT: 2 x $1,

12 BRYAN MORGAN BURSARY This bursary will be awarded to a graduating student who intends to pursue post-secondary education and someone who, in the opinion of the school administration or selection committee, has demonstrated exceptional service to others, in the school, the community or beyond. AMOUNT: $ CANADIAN DAUGHTERS LEAGUE #6 ACADEMIC BURSARY The Canadian Daughters League Assembly#6 Courtenay is an educational fraternal society of Canadian women dedicated to promote the interest of Canada and of Canadians. One of the annual projects of this society is to provide bursaries to deserving graduating grade 12 students male or female who plan to pursue post secondary education in Canada. Applicant must be in full time attendance in senior high school and present a letter of introduction. Attention will be paid to academic standings and financial needs. Bursary will be dispensed in full and mailed to the registrar's office of North Island College Student must be registered to take on the minimum course load which qualifies as a full year of studies at the post secondary institution. Student must be registered to start studies in September Deadline for claiming the bursary is 31 December 2018 This bursary is not intended for students who receive full year scholarships at a college or university. Please see bursary file in the Counselling Centre for more information. AMOUNT: $ Academic & $ Vocational Only offered through NIC as of Feb 22/18 CHARLIE PETRIE Charlie had a true zest for life. He wanted to do great things and experience everything that held a thrill, yet he also knew his limitations and so always exercised a healthy balance between caution and courage. At the same time, Charlie did not let others' opinions nor his own personal obstacles prevent him from pursuing what he wanted out of life. He sought after goals/dreams that were unique to him, and he did so with both confidence and humility. Charlie was also a very compassionate person, especially toward animals (from the furry to the scaly), but also toward any person who he saw might be struggling in life. He exuded enthusiasm and playfulness, and made those around him smile. Because of this he had many friends, some very close and very important to him. Despite its all too short duration, the life he lived was full and happy, and he will never be forgotten by those who knew him. With Charlie's character in mind, I envision the student receiving this bursary to exhibit similar traits, fulfilling the following criteria: - is pursuing a career/path for which they carry a passion for. - is pursuing a career/path in a field which encompasses compassionate care for animals or fellow human beings. 10

13 - is someone who has / is working to overcome personal adversity (financial, loss/grief, personal health issues etc.) AMOUNT: $1, CINDY LYNN PATRICK BURSARY A bursary has been established in memory of Cindy Lynn Patrick (formerly Hartley), a graduate of Highland Senior Secondary School who passed away on July 31, The bursary will be open to Highland students planning to pursue post-secondary education. The donor of the bursary has stipulated that the recipient must be one who has struggled to reach success in school and life. AMOUNT: $ COMOX DISTRICT TEACHERS ASSOCIATION BURSARY The Comox District Teachers Association (CDTA) offer a bursary for graduating students. There is one award to Highland graduates with a preference given to a student who intends to proceed into a Teacher Education Program. Bursaries may be held for a student for up to one year if the student requests. Upon receiving the bursary award, the recipient shall send a letter to the CDTA giving a brief description on how they will use the funds with a photo for the CDTA newsletter. The graduating student shall then receive a cheque from the Association. AMOUNT: $ COMOX KIWANIS L. HARTMAN BURSARY Highland graduates who will enter post-secondary engineering or technology programs are eligible to apply for a bursary established in the memory of L. Hartman, a long-time businessperson, school trustee and Kiwanis Club member. AMOUNT: $ COMOX VALLEY CLASSIC CRUISERS This bursary is offered to a Highland graduate who is pursuing a career in the automotive industry. In order to receive this bursary, the student must be enrolled in a post-secondary or an apprenticeship program. The bursary must be claimed with proof of registration by the end of October AMOUNT: $ COMOX VALLEY LIONS CLUB BURSARIES The Comox Valley Lions Club, providing community service for over 50 years in the Comox Valley, is proud to offer three bursaries of $1, each to the deserving graduates at Highland Secondary School. We are looking for students with an interest in pursuing the arts for two of the bursaries, while the third is for a student expected to go on with trades training. Open to both male 11

14 and female students, we are looking for students with a high academic standing and in need of financial support. AMOUNT: 3 x $ COMOX VALLEY REGIONAL DISTRICT BURSARY The Comox Valley Regional District encourages and supports educational pursuits in the area of water and waste water services. Criteria will be proof of registration and attendance at a relevant Canadian accredited post-secondary institution offering the Environmental Operators Certification Program (EOCP) training such as: Okanagan College, Thompson Rivers University, British Columbia Institute of Technology, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, North Island College related program. Applicants must provide proof of involvement in extra-curricular activities, a letter of introduction as stipulated by the respective school s bursary application process, as well as two letters of reference from a non-relative. AMOUNT: $1, COMOX VALLEY SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS ASSOCIATION BURSARY The Comox Valley Principals and Vice Principals Association awards bursaries to Highland Grads. One is awarded to a university or BCIT bound student, the other for vocational training. Criteria include school or community service. Award must be used within 27 months of graduation. AMOUNT: 2 x $ COURTENAY ELKS BPOE #60 BURSARY This bursary is awarded to a graduating student who is enrolling in a full course of studies at a post-secondary institution. Criteria guidelines for selection are: 1) financial need (first priority) 2) academic achievement 3) service in school and/or community AMOUNT: $1, CYNTHIA DAVIES MEMORIAL BURSARY FILBERG HERITAGE PARK & LODGE Cynthia was a long-time educator and counsellor in School District # 71. After her retirement, she volunteered in the community including with the Filberg Lodge and Park, serving as a Director for six years with the Association. She was a dedicated and passionate advocate who worked tirelessly to ensure that the historic setting of the Lodge and Park be preserved for all to enjoy. This bursary is to be presented to a graduating student entering studies at a BC college or university in the field of history and/or horticulture. AMOUNT: $

15 FLORENCE BURNS BURSARY The recipient is to reflect my mother and be awarded to a student who has participated in athletics, has a good sense of humour and demonstrates traits of compassion and kindness to others. Preference should be given to the pursuit of a nursing education. Students being supported by a single parent are to be given special consideration and also students who are pursuing further education or training at post high school level for university or technical study outside of the Comox Valley. AMOUNT: $2, FRANK LOOR MEMORIAL BURSARY This bursary is provided as a memorial to the late Frank Loor, who was a well-known businessman in the Cumberland area. Preference is given to a student entering post-secondary training in a field related to the medical sciences. AMOUNT: $ HAMILTON MACK LAING SCHOLARSHIP Given annually to a Highland graduate who will pursue a post-secondary education majoring in botany, biology, or environmental studies. This bursary will only be awarded once the recipient provides proof of registration in the required field of study. The Hamilton Mack Laing Scholarship recognizes the legacy of one of Comox s pioneers. AMOUNT: $ HAROLD ROBERT GILL BURSARY Bursaries are offered to graduates of Highland Secondary who are proceeding to post-secondary education. Mr. Gill retired to the Comox Valley in 1980 after serving in the Merchant Marines and working as a longshoreman. As he only had a grade 8 education, he wanted to be able to help students further their education. AMOUNT: 4 X $ JAMES DENTON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This bursary is awarded in honour of James Denton, a 2009 graduate of Highland Secondary School, who tragically lost his life. James was an all-around gentleman and was just starting his adult life with BC Hydro. This bursary is designed for a student entering post-secondary studies in the trades or in engineering. AMOUNT: $1,

16 JEAN KOTCHER LEADERSHIP BURSARY Jean Kotcher, who taught in the Comox Valley for many years, was an inspiring and nurturing teacher. She served as President of the Comox District Teachers Association for six years; and, as a skilled mediator for the BC Teacher s Federation Internal Mediation Services, Ms. Kotcher travelled around BC to help teachers mediate and resolve issues. Jean led by example: showing students, colleagues, and friends how to live in the world with openness and curiosity. She approached social justice issues with respect for the individual and due process and encouraged others to do the same. This Bursary is awarded to a student from the graduating class who has shown exceptional commitment to leadership and has actively participated in school and/or community service. The school s Bursary Committee will select the recipient based on: demonstrated leadership, postsecondary plans, and academic achievement. Leadership in student council or social justice issues within the school and/or within related community organizations or clubs are to be considered in the selection of the recipient. AMOUNT: $ KOMOUX MASTERS BASEBALL BURSARY This bursary is offered through the generosity of the members of this local old timers team league. The preferred recipient will be interested in continuing their education in the fields of recreation, athletics or home resident care for seniors. AMOUNT: $ KYLE FORTH MEMORIAL BURSARY Kyle was a wonderful young man who graduated from Highland in June of Kyle was tragically killed in a bike accident while riding home from work in Victoria. He enjoyed sports and was an active participant in many intramural activities with his friends. The recipient of this award should be a student continuing their education in the field of auto mechanics or heavy-duty mechanics. AMOUNT: $ MARK HUGHES MEMORIAL BURSARY Mark was killed in a car accident while returning on weekend leave from Royal Roads Military College. As a student at Highland, he was known for his perseverance and dedication. He was not an exceptional student, but had the desire and drive that allowed him to win a full ROTP scholarship. He was a member of the high school basketball, volleyball, and track and field teams. He inspired his teammates with his unselfish, aggressive play. This award is given to a graduating individual who most exhibits the personal attributes that Mark showed. AMOUNT: $

17 MIKE LAWLESS BURSARY Mike Lawless was an inspirational and dynamic man. As an alumni of Highland Secondary School, Mike exemplified being a team player through his pursuits in volleyball, basketball and track and field. He excelled academically while in high school and later at Simon Fraser University. He demonstrated his belief in criminal justice through his work as a Saanich Police Officer. Mike embodied team spirit during his many years as a rider and later as the Crew Boss for the Tour de Rock. He was selfless and empathetic in his volunteerism in his community. Finally, Mike was a loving dad to Tanner and Ethan and a devoted husband to Krista. The recipient of the Mike Lawless Bursary would reflect Mike s passion for academics, sport, community service and school involvement. The recipient ideally will have an interest in the criminal justice system with a focus in either policing or law. AMOUNT: $ NORTH ISLAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION - HIGH SCHOOL BURSARY A bursary will be offered to a Highland graduate who is entering NIC directly upon graduation and who is taking a full time program. The recipient will have demonstrated academic achievement and financial need. AMOUNT: $1, PAUL ARMSTRONG MEMORIAL BURSARY Paul Armstrong was a Grade 12 student at Highland Secondary. Paul was known for his cheerful disposition, kindness, beautiful smile and happy nature that inspired all who knew him. He had a willingness to help others and always get them involved. Paul lived life to the fullest, enjoyed people and everything he participated in, both in and outside of school. She was the first female physician in Comox and was the Canadian Family Physician of the year in This scholarship has been established in her memory and will be awarded to a graduating female who is pursuing a degree in biological sciences. AMOUNT: $1, STAN HEAL AWARD The Stan Heal Award is in tribute to the founding principal of Highland and its Advisory School concept. It is given annually to a student who embodies the concept of academic competency, school and community contributions and a positive influence on others. AMOUNT: $ STRATHCONA SUNRISE ROTARY CLUB BURSARY Three bursaries are offered to Highland graduates who intend to continue their post-secondary education. Three awards are given in the following categories: 1. students proceeding to career and business 2. students proceeding to vocational training 3. students proceeding to a post-secondary institute who demonstrate financial need. Bursary recipients must show proof of enrollment in a post-secondary institution by October of the same calendar year. AMOUNT: 3 x $ DR. TERRY JAMES BURSARY Applicants must have demonstrated a commitment of community service or volunteer work. AMOUNT: 2 x $ (Health Care) and 2 x $ (Trades) TRIPLE S BURSARY The Triple S (Scholarship, Service and Sport) Bursary has been established by Glenda Wilson, nee Ash, Courtenay High grad 1960, and Paul Wilson, Cumberland High grad 1959, in gratitude to the School District for the positive schooling memories and accomplishments of themselves and their children, Michelle, Vanier grad1982, and Jim, Vanier grad Michelle received the Triple S award given by Courtenay Junior High School in 1980 while Jim received the Courtenay Junior High School Academic Award in Michelle served the community as a member of the Girl Guides while Jim learned sign language in grade 4 at Puntledge Park Elementary which was a major factor in the formation of Jim s compassionate nature. He later volunteered to assist people suffering from schizophrenia. Michelle was an accomplished badminton player while Jim excelled in ice hockey, track and rugby. The $2, award is open to pupils finishing their secondary education and residing in School District #71, AMOUNT: $2, TYLER PHILLIPS MEMORIAL BURSARY Applicants (male or female) should have a strong interest in baseball or hockey. Preference given to a student intending to attend a post-secondary institution and continuing a sport interest. Selection based more on financial need than academics. If no candidate from either baseball or hockey, an applicant from another sport or category will also be considered. AMOUNT: $ WILLIAM BUD COLBOW BURSARY This bursary is provided from a fund established by the estate of William Lloyd Colbow and administered by the Comox Valley Community Foundation. The recipient must be connected in some way with the Comox Valley and be pursuing studies in Agriculture or Forestry. AMOUNT: $1, WILLIAM LAMB MEMORIAL BURSARY Bill Lamb was a long time teacher at Vanier and one of Highland s original teachers. His teaching area was drama. 22 ANNE GIBBON MEMORIAL BURSARY (HOPE AFLOAT CANADA) The Anne Gibbon Memorial Bursary (Hope Afloat Canada) is offered to a student entering the field of Health Sciences in the next academic year at any accredited post-secondary Canadian Institution in British Columbia. Criteria includes: 1. Financial need 2. Academic excellence 3. Involvement in extracurricular activities 4. Two reference letters AMOUNT: 2 x $ must complete the Anne Gibbon Memorial application form that is provided in the Counselling Centre BEN BELLAMY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Ben Bellamy was a Grade 11 Academic Gold honour roll student at Highland School. He was tragically killed by a reckless driver on February 21, Ben was a kind, gentle boy who wanted to become a physician like his father. In a letter of consolation to Ben s parents, one of his fellow students described Ben as the backbone of the class, bright, hardworking, funny, caring, and friendly. The scholarship will be awarded annually, to the Grade 12 student at Highland School who, in wishing to pursue post-graduate education at a university, most exhibits the personal attributes that Ben showed; high academic results, respect for others, and a kind, caring personality. AMOUNT: $5, divided into 4 annual payments of $1,250/year BETTY DIXON MEMORIAL BURSARY & THELMA OLIVER MEMORIAL BURSARY Betty and her husband, Harry, were spectators during the first season of Rainbow but became enthusiastic supporters thereafter. Betty was a member of Rainbow for many years, serving on the Board, behind the scenes, and on stage. When Betty passed away in early December of 2000, Harry and the family requested that donations in her memory be made to Rainbow Youth Theatre. This generous bequest has allowed Rainbow to offer a bursary each year to one of its members graduating from high school and continuing on to post-secondary education in the arts. The Betty Dixon Memorial Bursary is $ The Thelma Oliver Memorial Bursary will also be available to graduating students heading on to post-secondary education in the Arts. This second bursary has been made possible thanks to the generous support of Thelma s family and friends. This grant is in the amount of $ RYT encourages its youth members graduating to apply for one of these two separate bursaries. It is not necessary to identify which of the two bursaries you are applying for. Please note that we consider post-secondary education in the performing arts to include drama, dance, music, opera, magic, spoken word and circus arts. 23 BILL SWALES MEMORIAL BURSARY These bursaries are being donated by Comox Valley Pride, a non-profit group that represented the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, Queer (GLBTQ) community and their allies from and is available to all students graduating from Mark R. Isfeld, Vanier, Highland and Glacier View. Bill Swales worked hard for humanity and was actively involved in organizing events for the GLBTQ community for many years and was the President of Comox Valley Pride until he passed away in Bill was especially committed to making life better for GLBTQ youth and hoped that future generations of youth would have an easier time than those of his generation. Criteria for this bursary are as follows: The bursaries are for any form of post-secondary education or training, including programs like hair dressing schools, trades training, etc. Post-secondary does NOT have to be at a college or university level. Not solely based academic achievement but are intended to recognize those that participate in the wellbeing of GLBTQ students and their allies. Are open to all students (i.e., those that identify as GLBTQ as well as allies). Involvement in their school s GSA, or in the process of getting a GSA started. Leadership qualities. Kind, open and inclusive attitudes towards others. Promote acceptance of GLBTQ students. AMOUNT: $500 (up to 4 awarded) CEP CHINOOK LOCAL 630 The CEP Chinook Local 630 represented the papermaker workers at the mill in Campbell River, and they are wrapping up their business due to the mill s closure. The bursary fund has been created for students going in to any post-secondary or vocational education program. The bursary will be awarded to a graduating student in SD #71, who has financial need and successfully answers the following essay question: What does the labour movement mean to me? AMOUNT: $1, CV CHILDRENS DAYCARE SOCIETY - STUART FODEN MEMORIAL BURSARY The Comox Valley Children s Day Care Society: The Stuart Foden Memorial Bursary is a districtwide bursary, available for a graduating student of School District No. 71. The Criteria for this bursary are: Recipient must be enrolling full time in the Early Childhood Care and Education program at North Island College. This bursary is intended to support students to enter the field of ECCE as there is a shortage of qualified early childhood educators in this province. The recipient will be selected by a committee from the Comox Valley Children s Day Care Society. AMOUNT: $

24 COMOX FIREFIGHTERS ASSOCIATION BURSARY CVFD offers a bursary in honour of Mr. Norm Pratt, to a Highland graduate who will proceed to post-secondary education and who is in of financial need. Affiliation with Comox Fire Rescue will be considered. AMOUNT: $ COMOX LEGION BRANCH #160 LADIES AUXILIARY BURSARIES The Ladies Auxiliary Bursaries are available to SD No. 71 graduates attending a university, college, or trade or technical institute. Criteria: financial need, AMOUNT: $ must complete the Comox Legion Branch #160 Ladies Auxiliary application form that is provided in the Counselling Centre COMOX LEGION BRANCH #160 POPPY FUND BURSARIES This bursary will be awarded to a SD #71 graduate attending a BC or Yukon university, college, trade or technical institute full-time for two semesters. Qualifying applicants must be descendants of Veterans or Service Personnel who are serving, or have served, in the Canadian or British Commonwealth Forces, RCMP, or Merchant Navy. AMOUNT: 4 x $1, must complete the Comox Legion Branch #160 Poppy Fund application form that is provided in the Counselling Centre COMOX VALLEY MULTICULTURAL SOCIETY BURSARY Comox Valley Multicultural Society is a non-profit volunteer based organization that has been promoting multiculturalism in the Comox Valley for more than 20 years. The Intercultural Award will be given to 4 graduating students whose families and/or parents are either members of CVMS or immigrants from countries where English is not the official language. The award is to recognize the academic accomplishment the students have made through years of hard work while adapting to Canadian society. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale to be eligible.amount: 4 x $ shared between the three high school 22

25 COMOX VALLEY NATURE BURSARY This bursary is awarded to a graduating secondary school student in the Comox Valley. To be eligible, applicants must: 1. Have a career goal in biological or environmental sciences. 2. Preferably be actively involved in environmental and/or natural history-related activities. 3. Have high academic standing in courses relevant to biological and/or environmental sciences. 4. Have community volunteer experience, preferably with CVN or other environmentally-related organizations. 5. Be proceeding to a post-secondary institution within 15 months from the date of secondary school graduation (up to the start of the fall semester of the year following graduation. NOTE: The CVNspecific Bursary Application Form (which complements the generic application form and supporting documents provided by the schools that students submit to us) is available on the society s website: AMOUNT: $1, COMOX VALLEY UNITED SOCCER CLUB BURSARY Our club will provide six $ bursaries, provided there are applicants that we deem match the criteria. The bursaries are awarded for soccer involvement, not by attendance at a particular secondary school. The following five criteria are required in order to be considered for one of the bursaries: 1. Significant history of involvement with the CVUSC; 2. Possesses the profile/qualities of a highly motivated, well-rounded soccer athlete; 3. Contribution to the club other than as a player; 4. Family contribution to the club 5. Provides proof of attendance at an accredited post-secondary institution for the following September. AMOUNT: 6 X $ shared between the three high schools COURTENAY & DISTRICT FISH & GAME PROTECTIVE ASSOCIATION CLUB BURSARIES Two bursaries of $1, will be presented each year to two students graduation from grade 12 in the Comox Valley that qualify in at least 1 of the 2 criteria. Two bursaries of $1, will be presented each year to two students graduation from grade 12 in the Comox Valley that qualify in at least 1 of the 2 criteria A student furthering their education in the field which Courtenay Fish & Game promotes. Ex: Conservation, Environment, Forestry, Fisheries. This student does not necessarily have to be a club member dependent. The second recipient should be a dependent and not necessarily going into the conservation/environmental field. Dependents of members of Courtenay Fish & Game Protective Association means, child or grandchild. AMOUNT: 2 x $1, must complete the Courtenay & District Fish & Game application form that is provided in the Counselling Centre 23

26 COURTENAY LITTLE THEATRE BURSARY Courtenay Little Theatre is pleased to offer three awards to assist Comox Valley high school graduates to further their studies in the field of theatre, both technical and performance. In order to be eligible, students must intend to pursue theatre courses following graduation and have successfully participated in a school or extracurricular program that focuses on drama. Criteria for selection will include participation in school and community theatrical activity, academic achievement, written recommendations, and contribution to Courtenay Little Theatre. When two or more candidates meet the four main criteria equally, financial need will be taken into consideration. Proof of registration in a theatre program of the student s choice will be required prior to the receipt of these bursaries. Should no appropriate application be received from students in the field of theatre, consideration may be given to applications from students entering other disciplines in the performing arts. AMOUNT: 4 x $ open to all grade 12 students in the Comox Valley CUPE #439 MEMORIAL BURSARY This bursary has been established by the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 439 in memory and recognition of past members who worked in School District #71. The recipient must be a child, grandchild or child in care of a CUPE Local 439 member in good standing, who is proceeding to further education at a recognized institution. Each year this bursary honours a different department by providing a bursary for a graduate attending: Business Administration, Trades, Computer Technology, Library, and Education Assistants) post-secondary education. The post-secondary education category will be chosen each year by the Bursary Committee. Each year the committee will determine whether the bursary will 2 x $1,000 or 4 x $500. AMOUNT: $2, must complete the CUPE #439 Memorial application form that is provided in the Counselling Centre. EMCON SERVICES BURSARY Bursaries are offered annually to a son/daughter (or grandchild) of an employee of Emcon Services Inc. in our current locations. The bursaries will be awarded to graduates who are going on to further education at a post-secondary institute in the area of academics/engineering or in industry-related trades (heavy duty mechanics, welding, bridge worker, industrial warehousing etc.) The bursary must be used during the school year immediately following graduation. Proof of enrolment is required in order to access the payment. The criteria for this bursary will be focused on need, interest and responsibility, rather than strict academics (C+ average or better preferred). In the event that no son/daughter/grandchild of an Emcon Services Inc. employee is graduating from any district high school, the school will recommend candidates who have achieved a C+ average, and have exhibited extra effort and interest, and who have a financial need. The selected student will provide proof of enrollment including their social insurance number to Emcon s Cumberland office at which time the bursary cheque will be sent to the student. Application process: specific instructions in the Counselling Centre. Emcon Bursary Committee will make the final selection from all school district applicants. AMOUNT: $

The bursary must be applied for by October 2017 and will be paid upon proof of acceptance at a university or college. AMOUNT: 2 x $ ISABELLE AND BILL STUBBS BURSARY Bill Stubbs served as the principal of Courtenay Centre School from 1921 to Bill was a dominant figure in education in Courtenay during that period. He was active in his profession and he and his students were always involved in the community. Isabelle Stubbs was a graduate of Victoria s Normal School. She taught at Sandwick Alternate School from 1925 until she retired in For 57 years, she wrote a weekly newspaper column in which she addressed many issues, including educational material. Criteria will include academic standing, financial need and community involvement. AMOUNT: $1, KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS BURSARIES The Knights of Columbus provides annual bursaries to graduates of Highland. Applicants must have grandparents or great grandparents who were veterans. These bursaries must be used in the same calendar year as it is awarded. AMOUNT: $

28 LIAM GRIMM MUSIC MEMORIAL BURSARY Liam Grim was a Campbell River resident who had a profound and lasting influence in his community. Liam was a kind and gentle man. He helped create the Community Care Support Worker Program at Discovery Community College and cared for people with special needs; he was an independent educator offering classes in psychology, religion and spirituality and a talented jazz musician. His life ended on March 15, 2009 when he was overcome by health complications brought on by cancer. This bursary will be awarded to a deserving student who meets the following criteria: 1. Submits a letter of recommendation from a school or private music teacher AND from a community music contact 2. Will be attending a college or university music program in the same calendar year 3. Submit a letter demonstrating qualities that exemplify the following attributes of Liam Grimm: the joy of studying and playing music in school and, in turn, sharing one s music talents with community organizations (combos/bands/choirs/pit orchestra/church choirs). The applicant should also describe his/her future plans in studying music. 4. Preference may be given to a student pursuing jazz studies.
