1 Pleasant Valley Secondary School Local Scholarships and Bursaries Handbook March 2018 Purpose of Awards: To facilitate a student s ability to pursue post secondary education. Before funds are released, successful applicants will need to supply proof of fulltime enrollment. The offerings in this booklet are available only to Grade 12 students who graduate from PVSS. The awards are dependent upon donors and may vary from year to year.

2 The PVSS Local Scholarship and Bursary Committee The role of the PVSS Local Scholarship and Bursary Committee is to recognize the students effort, work ethic, and commitment to excellence. The Scholarship Booklet This booklet is divided into Four Sections: Section One: Section Two: Section Three: Application is not required for Awards in this section. Details and criteria are for information only. Students must complete an application, resume and cover letter for these awards. See Section Two for additional information. Students must apply directly to the donor following the instructions in the booklet. See Section Three for additional information. Section Four: These awards are available only to post secondary students. Completed applications and all supporting documents must be submitted directly to PVSS Vice Principal by Thursday, April 12 th, 2018 (3:30 pm) NO LATE APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED Thursday, April 26 th pm 5:30 pm has been selected for the individual demonstrations to showcase abilities, skills, talents and future plans. Donors will be invited to this exhibition of excellence and will have the opportunity to talk with applicants. In order to be considered for scholarships/bursaries, applicants must participate in this showcase. As part of the application process, members of the Committee will offer assistance in completing the application process and in developing a demonstration of students abilities

3 SECTION ONE AWARDS APPLICATION IS NOT REQUIRED FOR AWARDS IN THIS SECTION DETAILS AND CRITERIA ARE FOR INFORMATION ONLY TOP ACADEMIC AWARD MCKECHNIE TROPHY Donor: North Okanagan Shuswap Teachers Association (NOSTA) PVSS student with the highest final average based on the criteria below The recipient will a) be declared the recipient and will be informed by letter after provincial examination marks are received b) has taken a minimum of ten academic courses; c) has completed English 11, Mathematics 11, Science 11 (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) and Social Studies 11; and d) has taken a minimum of four Academic Grade 12 courses with English 12 being one of the four Administration and counselors with consultation with The District Scholarship & Bursary Committee will determine the top candidates who will then be named at the graduation ceremonies. Recipient will be recognized at the subsequent graduation ceremonies. NOSTA will pay directly based upon submission of proof of enrollment in an accredited post secondary institution TOP ALL ROUND STUDENT AWARD Donor: Scholastic Achievement must be on three of four honour rolls in grade 12 year Must reflect the qualities of a good citizen (see Top Citizen Award) Must be actively involved in one or both of the following at PVSS: a) Athletics: significant contribution as a playing member of a school team b) Fine Arts: significant contribution in one or more visual or performing art Preference may be given to a student who participates in both Nominated and selected by the staff of PVSS TOP ATHLETIC AWARDS (Male & Female) x 2 Donor: Shepherds Hardware Must be in Grade 12 at PVSS Must show a significant contribution as a team member through his/her attitude, sportsmanship and personal skill level General contribution must extend beyond being a team member Recipient selected by PVSS Athletic Department - 2 -

4 SECTION ONE AWARDS TOP CITIZEN AWARD BROWN TROPHY/TERRY MOORE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Amount : To be determined annually Donor: North Okanagan Shuswap Teachers Association (NOSTA) Involvement in many areas of PVSS school life that goes beyond course commitments Student will be judged on attitude towards others in school as well as general deportment Nominated and selected by the staff of PVSS To be paid directly to student based upon submission of proof of enrollment in an accredited post secondary institution NORTH OKANAGAN SHUSWAP PRINCIPALS AND VICE PRINCIPALS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP Donor: North Okanagan Shuswap Principals and Vice Principals Association Student must represent his or her school well, both within the school and community Academically strong Demonstrate a commitment to the school in the role of leadership, service, and/or citizenship Intended for a student planning to pursue post secondary study in an area related to children, youth or human services To be paid directly to student based upon submission of proof of enrollment (including a course registration and fee receipts) in an accredited post secondary institution Selected by the PVSS Scholarship & Bursary Committee, Principal and Vice Principal CHAUNCEY J PHILLPS MEMORIAL BURSARY Donor: Chauncey J Phillips Memorial Bursary fund Awarded to a PVSS student on the basis of financial need and academic standing; however, a student s diligence may outweigh academic performance. Preference given to resident of Falkland Selected by the PVSS Scholarship & Bursary Committee DAN SCHIMELFENIG MEMORIAL BURSARY Donor: Tolko Industries Awarded to a deserving student entering a technical or vocational field Student must have attended PVSS in grades 11 and 12 and have shown exemplary achievement in the area of technology Teachers in the technology areas will select the top student from among the technology courses offered at PVSS Consideration may also be given to grade point average and survey of courses taken Note: The award may go toward tuition or expenses related to courses being taken; for example, books or tools directly associated with the course of studies. Appropriate receipts must be forwarded to the PVSS Scholarship Committee

5 SECTION ONE AWARDS DAVID SAGER BURSARY Donor: Armstrong/Vernon Learning Disabilities Association Awarded to a PVSS student who has been assessed and identified with a learning disability OR a student who has known learning difficulties and received learning assistance during his/her school years. The Bursary may be claimed when the student provides documentation to show enrollment in further education. This may be college, university, a trade or any program which will enhance the student s future and job prospects. This award may go to tuition or expenses related to courses being taken; for example, boots or tools directly associated with the course of studies. Other acceptable expenses might be professional driving training, first aid courses, WHIMIS, Food Safe etc. Appropriate receipts must be forwarded to the PVSS scholarship Committee. Preference may be given to a student who has attended PVSS from grades Bursary must be used within 24 months of receipt. Selected by the Vernon Learning Disabilities Association in consultation with the PVSS Scholarship & Bursary Committee EDWIN I. CLARKE HISTORY 12 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Amount: $800 Donor: Mr. James Grenke Awarded to the student who demonstrates the most overall excellence in History 12 at PVSS Selected by the History 12 teacher in cooperation with the PVSS Scholarship and Bursary Committee FALKLAND AND DISTRICT SUNDAY MORNERS' CLUB Donor: Sunday Morners' Club Awarded to a grade 12 PVSS Student Student must be a resident of Falkland Student must be registered with a college, university or trade school Selected by the PVSS Scholarship and Bursary Committee FRENCH BURSARY Donor: Piolat Foundation through School District 83 Demonstrated outstanding interest and keen ability in French 11 and 12 Graduating from PVSS and pursuing further education with French as a component Recipient will use French in some area of life or career Will be paid directly to recipient by School District 83 based upon submission of proof of enrollment in an accredited post secondary institution - 4 -

6 SECTION ONE AWARDS KIN CLUB OF ARMSTRONG Amount : To be determined annually Donor: Kinsmen Club of Armstrong : Awarded to a grade 12 PVSS student who has demonstrated leadership and humanitarian attributes by giving back to the community Preference to a student planning to study Business, Service, Hospitality or Tourism Selected by the PVSS Scholarship & Bursary Committee in cooperation with the Kin Club Note: The award may go toward tuition or expenses related to courses being taken; for example, books or tools directly associated with the course of studies. Appropriate receipts must be forwarded to the PVSS Scholarship Committee LEE FAMILY BURSARY IN EDUCATION Amount : $300 Donor: The Ben Lee family : Awarded to a student planning a career in the field of education Attended PVSS for Grades 11 and 12 Selected by the PVSS Scholarship & Bursary Committee MANKE GOWAN DRAMA BURSARY Donor: Manke Gowan Trust Fund Awarded to a deserving PVSS student in the Drama Program Selected by the Fine Arts Department MANKE GOWAN TOP FINE ARTS BURSARY Amount : To be determined annually Donor: Manke Gowan Trust Fund Awarded to a serious and dedicated PVSS student who has demonstrated ability in two of the following arts areas: visual arts, drama, music or dance Recipient must demonstrate the motivation to develop that ability Selected by the Fine Arts Department MIKE LUDWIG MEMORIAL BURSARY Amount: To be determined each year Donor: Ludwig Trust Fund Awarded to a deserving PVSS student who has demonstrated initiative and good citizenship Open to students who are entering any academic, technical or vocational pursuit Selected by the PVSS Scholarship & Bursary Committee NIXON WENGER BURSARY Amount: $ Donor: Nixon Wenger Barristers & Solicitors Awarded on basis of need and academic standing of a PVSS student Selected by the PVSS Scholarship & Bursary Committee - 5 -

7 SECTION ONE AWARDS NORTH ENDERBY TIMBER FORESTRY/INDUSTRIAL Amount: $400 x 2 Donor: North Enderby Timber : Awarded to a student who shows good performance and is interested in trades and who works hard in class but may not necessarily have high grades Students must be enrolled in Technology or Trade program at PVSS (Metal work, Wood Work, etc.) Award may go toward tuition or expenses related to course or work (books, tools, etc.) Selected by Practical Arts Teachers in cooperation with PVSS Scholarship Committee and donor PVSS EXCELLENCE IN ART AWARD Donor: PVSS Art Department Awarded to a PVSS student of high proficiency in the Art Program To promote life long involvement in the visual arts and to assist in furthering his/her education, preferably in the field of Art Recipients may choose either a $ award to be used towards post secondary education or a $ gift card to be used to purchase art supplies Selected by the PVSS Fine Arts department PVSS EXCELLENCE IN MUSIC AWARD Donor: The Music students of PVSS Awarded to a PVSS student of high proficiency in the Music Program to assist in furthering his/her education, preferably in the music field Selected by the PVSS Music Director in consultation with the PVSS Scholarship & Bursary Committee PVSS LEADERSHIP CLASS AWARD Donor: PVSS Leadership Awarded to the PVSS student who has made the greatest contribution to PVSS school activities in Grade 11 & 12 Preference will be given to a student in the PVSS Leadership 11 & 12 class Selected by the Leadership Teachers in cooperation with the PVSS Scholarship & Bursary Committee - 6 -

8 SECTION ONE AWARDS SANDY PRYSTUPA BURSARY Donor: Mrs. Evelyn DeGryse Awarded to a student who may have had difficulty in school and may have required some assistance but not necessarily a student who is classified as special needs or learning assistance Awarded to a student who may be pursuing a career path as a Professional Driver, CEA, Care Aid, Hairdresser or any trade or post secondary studies Selected by the PVSS Scholarship & Bursary Committee in consultation with the Learning Resource Teacher SMART & CARING COMMUNITY FUND Donor: Community Foundation of the North Okanagan Bursary Awarded to a PVSS student on the basis of financial need and academic standing. Selected by the PVSS Scholarship & Bursary Committee SUSAN FENNER DANCE BURSARY Donor: PVSS Dance Gala Awarded to a PVSS student of high proficiency in Advanced Studio Dance to assist in furthering his/her dance education Selected by the Dance Teacher in consultation with the PVSS Fine Arts Department Will be paid directly to the studio or conference by PVSS upon submission of appropriate receipts WALTER ELLASCHUK MEMORIAL BURSARY Donor: Estate of Walter Ellaschuk Demonstrated need to attend a post secondary institution Strong academic performance and effort A well rounded lifestyle in academic pursuit, sports and hobbies Awarded to student who is "emblematic of the life of Walter Ellaschuk who was always dedicated to helping young people" Selected by the PVSS Scholarship Committee Will be paid direct to recipient by North Okanagan School District 83 based upon submission of proof of enrollment in an accredited post secondary institution - 7 -

9 SECTION TWO AWARDS APPLICATION IS REQUIRED FOR AWARDS IN THIS SECTION PLEASE REFER TO THE APPLICATION PROCESS BELOW The Application Process Complete the PVSS SCHOLARSHIP & BURSARY APPLICATION FORM This form should be the first page of your package. Check off all the scholarships or bursaries for which you applied. Please remember to obtain the required signatures. Prepare and submit the following: 1. GENERIC COVER LETTER This letter should not reference specific scholarships or bursaries This letter will be photocopied and submitted for all the scholarships and bursaries checked off on the Bursary Application Form. Please remember to sign your letter. 2. SCHOLARSHIP STYLE RESUME (Two page maximum) This resume will be photocopied and submitted for all the scholarships and bursaries checked off on the Bursary Application Form. Please remember to include your name and address on your resume 3. ONE LETTER OF REFERENCE This letter will be photocopied and submitted for all the scholarships and bursaries checked off on the Bursary Application Form. Please make your request for your letter of reference as soon as possible. (for teachers before Spring Break) Please ask your teachers to put letter on School Letter Head 4. ANY ADDITIONAL LETTER OR FORM AS REQUESTED BY DONOR Scholarships and Bursaries marked with * on the application required additional letters or application forms. See the booklet for details. 10 SECTION TWO AWARDS APPLICATION REQUIRED ARMSTRONG REGIONAL COOPERATIVE Amount: $1000 Donor: Armstrong Regional Cooperative Awarded to a deserving PVSS student who has shown initiative and is planning to further his/her education at a recognized post secondary institution Priority will be given to students who are themselves or whose parents are active Armstrong Co op members for a minimum of one year Selected by the PVSS Scholarship & Bursary Committee in cooperation with the Armstrong Regional Co op ARMSTRONG & DISTRICT GARDEN CLUB BURSARY Donor: Armstrong Garden Club Awarded to a student who is planning further studies in the fields of a) horticulture with emphasis in landscaping, botany or plant physiology, aquaculture or related to plant propagation, growth & research. b) forestry with emphasis in silver culture/research; or c) agriculture d) environment studies Students must submit a Letter of application to the Armstrong & District Garden Club Work or Volunteer experience related to horticulture, forestry, agriculture or aquaculture would be an asset. Scholarship is to be used within 18 months of being awarded Funds will be paid by the Club directly to the applicant upon proof of registration in post secondary studies. ARMSTRONG LADIES CLUB BURSARY Amount: $1000 Donor: Armstrong Ladies Club Awarded to a deserving PVSS student. Academic standing and financial need are considered Recipient must reflect the qualities of a good citizen Selection by the Armstrong Ladies Club Bursary Committee in cooperation with the PVSS Scholarship & Bursary Committee Will be paid directly to the post secondary institution by the Ladies Club based upon submission of proof of enrollment in an accredited post secondary institution Must be used within one year of receipt. ARMSTRONG SPALLUMCHEEN ENVIRONMENTAL TRUST BURSARY Donor: Armstrong Spallumcheen Environmental Trust Must have demonstrated an interest in the environment through a program of studies or in the community Additional letter should be included which explains why the individual should receive this bursary Will be paid to a post secondary institution and must be used within 18 months Please refer to website for additional information Interviews will be held in April or during Scholarship Showcase. Selection by the Armstrong Spallumcheen Environmental Trust in cooperation with the PVSS Scholarship and Bursary Committee Would like Recipient to make a presentation at an ASET meeting after completed of first year of post secondary studies - 9 -

11 SECTION TWO AWARDS APPLICATION REQUIRED ARMSTRONG SPALLUMCHEEN FIRE DEPARTMENT Bob Johnson Memorial BURSARY Donor: Armstrong Spallumcheen Fire Department First consideration will be given to a child of a member of the Fire Department Selection will be made by the Fire Department ARMSTRONG SPALLUMCHEEN HEALTH CARE AUXILIARY BURSARIES Donor: Armstrong Spallumcheen Health Care Society Awarded to three PVSS students planning a career in the healthcare field A qualifying level of academic standing necessary for an accredited post secondary institution. It is an asset for the applicant to have volunteered in some form of the Healthcare field. The successful applicants will be selected by the A/SHA Bursary Committee. After the applicants are selected the recipients will be allowed 2 years to accept the award. The bursary recipients must have a photocopy of their proof of enrolment and the date of enrolment in an accredited post secondary institution sent to the A/SHA before the award is paid. ARMSTRONG SPALLUMCHEEN RECYCLING CENTRE BURSARY Amount : To be determined annually Donor : Armstrong Spallumcheen Bottle Depot : Recipient must reflect the qualities of a good citizen Successful completion of HS Diploma / Certificate at PVSS with a minimum C+ average Must demonstrate excellence in volunteer and/or work experience in recycling and/or environmental field related industry during their time at PVSS Additional letter should be included proposing a creative yet practical idea tackling one of the following challenges: 1) increasing a specific aspect in environmental awareness amongst students k 12, local. OR 2) increasing a specific recycling activity of choice amongst students k 12, local. Selection by the Armstrong Spallumcheen Recycling Centre. Final decision to be made by donor. ARMSTRONG SPALLUMCHEEN STUDENT ASSISTANCE ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP Amount: $1000 Donor: Armstrong Spallumcheen Students Assistance Association Awarded to a deserving student entering a technical, business Program or vocational field Student must have attended PVSS in grade 11 & 12 Financial need is reviewed and will be a consideration of entitlement Student must be registered with a college, university or trade school Selected by the PVSS Scholarship and Bursary Committee

12 SECTION TWO AWARDS APPLICATION REQUIRED ARMSTRONG SPALLUMCHEEN STUDENT ASSISTANCE ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP Amount: $1000 Donor: Armstrong Spallumcheen Students Assistance Association Awarded to a deserving student entering an academic or technology fields Student must have attended PVSS in grade 11 & 12 Financial need is reviewed and will be a consideration of entitlement Student must be registered with a college, university or trade school Selected by the PVSS Scholarship and Bursary Committee ASKEWS OF ARMSTRONG BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION BURSARY Donor: Askew s Foods (Armstrong) Awarded to a deserving PVSS student entering a business field Academic standing and financial need will be considered Preference given to employees of Askews Selected by Askews in cooperation with the PVSS Scholarship & Bursary Committee ASKEWS OF ARMSTRONG CLINT TERNIER MEMORIAL BURSARY Amount : $500 Donor: Askews Foods (Armstrong) Awarded to a deserving PVSS student entering a technical field Academic standing and financial need will be considered Preference given to employees of Askews Selected by Askews in cooperation with the PVSS Scholarship & Bursary Committee ASKEWS OF ARMSTRONG JILLIAN MCKINTY MEMORIAL BURSARY Donor: Askews Foods (Armstrong) Awarded to a PVSS deserving student Academic standing and financial need will be considered Must have a C+ average Preference given to employees of Askews Selected by Askews in cooperation with the PVSS Scholarship Committee ASPARAGUS COMMUNITY THEATRE (ACT) BURSARY Donor: Asparagus Community Theatre (ACT) : Awarded to a PVSS student who has made an outstanding contribution in the Performing Arts, to include but not be limited to technical aspects of theatre such a lighting, sound, set design, costuming, directing and to still include acting, dance, music and all related aspects of theatre Provide letter of application outlining specific contributions to theatre arts. Involvement with Asparagus Community Theatre(ACT) is not mandatory but is an asset Financial need may be considered. Selected by ACT Scholarship Committee in cooperation with the PVSS Scholarship Committee. Will be paid directly by ACT based upon submission of proof of enrollment in accredited post secondary institution

13 BETTY ATKINSON BURSARY Amount: $1000 Donor: City of Armstrong and Community Trust : Student must be in Grade 12 at PVSS or a Profile 2 Student at Gateway Recipient will be a deserving student who has demonstrated initiative and good citizenship, and been involved in many areas of school life, beyond course commitments, and has taken that interest outside the school into the Community Application should be accompanied by a personal letter outlining evidence that award criteria are met. Such letter should include an independent letter of support indicating activities within the community that would indicate citizenship outside the classroom and the school. Will be paid by the City of Armstrong directly to recipient based upon submission of proof of enrollment in a post secondary institution Recipient will be given 18 months to claim award CAM JAMMERS CAR CLUB BURSARY Amount: To be determined on an annually basis Donor: Cam Jammers Car Club Bursary will be for post secondary education only. Student must be entering a recognize trades program Prescribed course must offer an achievement certificate, diploma or degree. A correspondence course does not qualify for funds. Student must begin course within 18 months Students must complete a letter of intent and additional application Will be paid directly to the applicable institutions upon proof of enrollment. CHRIS PIEPER BURSARY SECTION TWO AWARDS APPLICATION REQUIRED Donor: City of Armstrong and Community Trust : Student must be in Grade 12 at PVSS. Must be entering an agriculture or forestry field of study. Recipient will be a deserving student who has demonstrated initiative and good citizenship, and involved in many areas of school life, beyond course commitments, and has taken that interest outside the school into the Community. Will be paid by the City of Armstrong directly to recipient based upon submission of proof of enrollment in a post secondary institution. Recipient will be given 18 months to claim award. CULLEN JAMES ROWAN BURSARY.00 Donor: Nor Val Rentals Ltd. Awarded to the PVSS student who has been active in sports and the community Demonstrate a fun loving attitude and a love for life Must have a part time job Selected by Nor Val Rentals

14 SECTION TWO AWARDS APPLICATION REQUIRED DISTRICT DOGWOOD/AUTHORITY AWARD Amount: $1250. (Number of awards to be determined annually) Donor: School District #83 (North Okanagan Shuswap) : Must complete a District Scholarship Application form (Available in April/May) Must pass a preliminary screening process. Candidates will be short listed by District Scholarship School Committee Must have a C+ average for Grade 12 year Must make a formal presentation to the District Scholarship Selection Committee composed of board members, administration, school teacher reps and the public Selected by the District Scholarship Selection committee coordinated by the Superintendent and composed of board members, school teacher reps and the public Will be paid directly by School District 83 based upon submission of proof of enrollment in an accredited postsecondary institution Additional information will be available from District Scholarship School Committee. An informational meeting will be held in April/May. ERIC ROBERTSON MEMORIAL BURSARY Amount: $300 Donor: Diana s Monogramming Awarded to a well deserving and persistent student Demonstrates a strong relationship with peers Preference to a student who may be pursuing a career path in the trades Selected by the PVSS Scholarship & Bursary Committee in co operation with donor FALKLAND SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION x 2 Donor: Falkland Softball Association : Awarded to two Grade 12 residents of Falkland Funds will be paid directly to the college or university upon proof of registration. Scholarship is to be used within 24 months of being awarded. Selected by the PVSS Scholarship Committee GORDON SCHNARE BURSARY 0 Donor: GORDON SCHNARE : Awarded to a PVSS student that has ties to veterans. Ties could include, but are not limited to, decedents of a veteran (does not have to be Canadian) or volunteerism to support veterans. Please provide a letter (500 words maximum) outlining your specific ties to veterans and your post secondary plans. Open to students who are entering any academic, technical or vocational pursuit Will be paid directly to the applicable institution upon proof of enrollment Selected by the family of the donor

15 SECTION TWO AWARDS APPLICATION REQUIRED JIM STEPHENSON BURSARY Donor: The Staff of Highland Park Elementary through the Jim Stephenson Scholarship Trust Fund Awarded to a PVSS student who attended Highland Park Elementary Recipient must have contributed positively to the school and/or community Recipient must have a strong academic record Selected by the staff of Highland Park Elementary in cooperation with the PVSS Scholarship & Bursary Committee Will be paid directly by Highland Park Elementary School based upon submission of proof of enrollment in an accredited post secondary institution KAREN BEDARD MEMORIAL BURSARY (this award will alternate each year between PVSS & SD 22) Donor: Karen Bedard Memorial Fund Awarded to a student who is planning a full course of studies in a medical field (medicine, dentistry, nursing, physiotherapy, medical technician) Selected by the Karen Bedard Selection Committee in cooperation with the PVSS Scholarship & Bursary Committee Will be paid directly by School District #22 (Vernon) upon submission of proof of enrollment in an accredited post secondary institution KIN CLUB OF ARMSTRONG BURSARY Donor: Kinsmen Club of Armstrong Preference to a PVSS student planning a career in a community related field Financial need and Academic Standing will be considered Preferred Recipient to have contributed positively to the community Selected by the Kin Club in cooperation with the PVSS Scholarship & Bursary Committee LIONS CLUB OF ARMSTRONG BURSARY Amount: $ (number of bursaries to be determined annually) Donor: Lions Club of Armstrong Awarded to a deserving PVSS student. Academic standing and financial need considered. Recipient must reflect the qualities of a good citizen. Recipient must attend a post secondary institution in British Columbia Selection by the Lions Club Bursary Committee in cooperation with the PVSS Scholarship & Bursary Committee
