Introduction The International Center for Studies of Chinese Civilization at Fudan University (abbr. ICSCC) is an international platform for research on Chinese civilization.

ICSCC will provide visiting research opportunities to outstanding scholars from overseas.

3 Introduction The International Center for Studies of Chinese Civilization at Fudan University (abbr. ICSCC) is an international platform for research on Chinese civilization. Supported by Fudan s strength in the humanities, ICSCC strives to promote Chinese studies as well as cross-cultural exchange and dialogue among global academic community. ICSCC will provide visiting research opportunities to outstanding scholars from overseas. Through oncampus lectures, small-scale workshops, and publishing opportunities, it will constitute a comprehensive and multi-level system of exchange between visiting and local scholars. This not only provides non-chinese scholars opportunities for on-the-spot research, but also fosters greater international commitment to research on Chinese civilization. Through inviting the international academic community into China, ICSCC hopes to convey Chinese civilization and its domestic scholarship to the world, creating an innovative method of Sino-foreign academic exchange. Based on Fudan campus, ICSCC strives to establish itself as a stronghold for effective collaboration and dialogue among global academic community and it will pioneer this effort through its visiting scholars program. Afterwards, aiming to bring the studies on Chinese civilization to another level, it will promote joint collaborative opportunities for advanced research overseas by establishing branch centers co-organized with oversea universities and research institutes of international standing. ICSCC endeavors to be a place where Chinese values and global perspectives would come together. To increasing the mutual understanding between scholars of China and scholars of other countries, it also tries to be one of the major outlets for Chinese scholarship on the global stage. 01

ICSCC Visiting Scholars Program ICSCC Visiting Scholars Program officially started in September, 2012, which is for qualified young scholars from outside of China who are at the early or middle

Each year, the ICSCC invites up to 12 visiting scholars from overseas to conduct research at Fudan University for the visitation from 1 to 6 months.

7 ICSCC Visiting Scholars Program ICSCC Visiting Scholars Program officially started in September, 2012, which is for qualified young scholars from outside of China who are at the early or middle stages of their academic careers with a proposed focus on Chinese civilization. Each year, the ICSCC invites up to 12 visiting scholars from overseas to conduct research at Fudan University for the visitation from 1 to 6 months. Successful applicants will receive support to pursue independent research while in residence at Fudan. The Center shall provide visiting scholars with one-time roundtrip traveling expenses (standard economy-class airline price), as well as reasonable living stipends and accommodations for the duration of the visit. The Center shall provide an on-campus research office with computer printing facilities, and access to books and reference materials in Fudan libraries. During the visit, they are expected to make at least one presentation on individual research topic and lead one workshop in collaboration with Fudan and non-fudan faculty members and scholars. Projects funded under the program are expected to result in publications in Chinese. Till March 2017, 42 applications have been approved and 39 scholars have completed or are conducting their research in the center. 05

13 Visiting Scholars Workshop Since 2012, ICSCC has already held 34 visiting scholar workshops, about 6 to 8 workshops per year in average. The workshops cover an extensive range of topics such as Chinese religions and philosophy, global history, history of science, contemporary culture and politics, fine arts, urban studies and Chinese literature. 11

14 Academic Lectures ICSCC invites distinguished scholars to host lectures on certain academic and cultural issues. There have been 15 lectures given by prominent scholars. The visiting scholars also have given lectures based on their recent findings during their stay at Fudan. 12

18 ICSCC Visiting Scholars Program Guidelines Overview The International Center for Studies of Chinese Civilization (ICSCC) at Fudan University is pleased to announce the ICSCC Visiting Scholars Program. Officially established in March, 2012, the ICSCC is a platform for research in the advancement of new approaches to studies on Chinese civilization and crosscultural exchange among global academic community. Supported by Fudan s strength in the humanities, ICSCC strives to create a resident research community to engage in research projects concerning Chinese civilization. Through on-campus lectures, small-scale workshops, and publishing opportunities, ICSCC will constitute a comprehensive and multilevel system of exchange between visiting and local scholars. ICSCC s Visiting Scholars Program is for qualified young scholars from outside of China who are at their early or middle stages of academic careers with a proposed focus on Chinese civilization. Budget Each year, the ICSCC invites up to 12 visiting scholars from overseas to conduct research at Fudan University for the visitation from 1 to 6 months. The center shall provide visiting scholars with one-time round-trip traveling expenses (standard economy-class airline price), as well as standard and reasonable living stipends and accommodations for the duration of the visit. The center shall provide an on-campus research office with computer printing facilities, and access to books and reference materials in Fudan libraries. Assignments Local liaison. Visiting scholars should collaborate with a local scholar. If the local scholar is from outside of Fudan, the Center shall arrange a Fudan scholar in a similar field of study to act as liaison. Guidelines for application Eligibility Applicants must be under 50 years of age. Applicants should have received the doctoral degree and Workshop. Visiting scholars should lead one workshop in collaboration with Fudan and non-fudan faculty members and scholars. The workshop should be no longer than one week s duration. Besides the organizers, each workshop opens 20 places in maximum for scholars engaged in related field of research. Travel expenses and hotels for workshop participants from 16

19 outside Shanghai will be covered by ICSCC. Workshop papers may be selected by ICSCC for translation and publication. Application Procedures The center issues a call for proposals, and accepts applications. Then, it gathers application materials and the Executive Board begins preliminary selection, distributing applications to relevant experts for review, requiring interviews when necessary. Final acceptance decisions are made by the Academic Board based on applicants circumstances and review results. Applications should consist of the following: 1) Application cover page: project title and full contact information for applicant, including name, title, contact information ( , telephone, postal mailing address); receive application all year round, and will process the application by April 30 and October 31. Applications should be sent by to Ms. Chen HUANG, the Program Co-ordinator at ICSCC Fudan. Questions about the program or the application procedures may also be directed to her.
