2 WHAT IS THE CHINA ABROAD STUDY PROGRAM? The China Study Abroad Program is a 4-week educational and cultural study program designed to provide an opportunity to learn about the Chinese culture, history, language, education, politics, philosophy, economics, and government through lectures, tours, workshops, cultural events, and social activities in Beijing, China. Registered UH students are eligible for 3-9 hours of UH credit for this study. THE CENTRAL UNIVERSITY FOR NATIONALITIES The Central University for Nationalities, our host university, is a top national university with a student population consisting of 56 ethnic minority groups. It is located near many well-known parks in Beijing, the political, educational, and cultural center of China. Additionally, Beijing holds a deep historical and cultural significance and is recognized as a major tourist center in China. COST The program cost is $1,650 plus roundtrip airfare between Houston and Beijing (at a group rate). This amount includes housing at the University and hotels in Xian and Shanghai, study materials, transportation within China, and admission fees to tourist sites and music/art performances. A non-refundable application fee of $100 is due before the Center will accept an application. Registered UH students are eligible to apply for an International Education Fund Scholarship at the Office of International Studies and Programs and the Bauer College of Business Scholarship at UH. STUDENT HOUSING ACCOMMODATIONS IN CHINA Program participants and students will stay at the Central University for Nationalities Foreign Guesthouse, located on the university campus. Each room is designed for two people. WEEKEND TOURIST TRAVEL Aside from the educational and academic value of this program, we offer our students with opportunities to visit national and historical treasures in China, including the following sites: The Great Wall Ming Tombs The Temples of Heaven Imperial Palace Terra Cotta Warriors Waterfront Band Oriental Pearl Tower Wild Goose Pagoda Shanghai Museum Shanghai Yu Gardens WHO CAN APPLY FOR THIS PROGRAM? Forbidden City Ethnic Nationalities Park Summer Palace China Art Museum The Program is available to all UH students, faculty, and staff, as well as to interested community members. HOW TO APPLY FOR THE CHINA ABROAD STUDIES PROGRAM Interested participants must submit an application to the Asian American Studies Center. The following requirements must be met before travel: Submission of a completed application and $100 Non-Refundable Application Fee Submission a valid passport and a $50 visa application fee for entry to China Hepatitis A & B vaccines are recommended before travel Submission of all applicable fees required before leaving for China. 6 ASIAN AMERICAN STUDIES CENTER THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON CHINA ABROAD STUDY PROGRAM Contract of Agreement and Medical Release Form The Asian American Studies Center s 2008 China Abroad Study Program is a University of Houston-sponsored educational program designed to provide University of Houston s faculty, students, and staff, as well as Houston community members with opportunities to explore and study Chinese culture, history, philosophy, language, education, and economic development in China. I also understand that any form of behavior deemed inappropriate during this visit is subject to disciplinary action by the University of Houston upon our return to the United States.
