3 1 V I S I T W W W. H E A LT H - F I R S T. O R G INTRO 2011 Just over 15 years ago Health First was founded by visionary leaders as a notfor-profit healthcare system dedicated to improving the health of this community. We want to ensure that our healthcare resources and facilities continue meeting the needs of our community. Actually, we ve been part of this community since 1937 when Holmes Regional Medical Center (formerly Brevard Hospital) opened as the county s first hospital. Today, Health First continues bringing the latest technological advances and highly trained professionals and physicians to Brevard. This includes providing more than 6,000 local jobs as the county s second-largest private employer. Healthcare dollars invested in Health First will always go into improving health care in Brevard such as performing Brevard s first robotic-assisted surgeries at Holmes and building the state-of-the-art Viera Hospital and Medical Plaza at Viera Health Park in one of Brevard s fastest growing areas. By providing the latest, most advanced outpatient and inpatient diagnostic, emergency, and inpatient care at all our hospitals and facilities, Health First is ensuring that we offer the right choices, right here for the health of Brevard. In the pages that follow, you ll read about the manyy way ways Health First benefits the health of the community, right here in Brevard. 4 2 LETTER FROM OUR LEADERSHIP 2011 Dear Community Member, Improving the lives of our neighbors motivates everything we do in Health First s local, not-for-profit family of healthcare services. You re why we provide the right healthcare choices, right here in Brevard. The following real-life stories of healing and caring show how we re fulfilling our Vision of delivering high-quality, patient-centered health care every person, every time right here in Brevard! From bringing the first da Vinci robotic-assisted surgical system to Brevard, making it possible for a local woman to have a desperately-needed, delicate surgery, to offering the latest minimally-invasive interventional spinal procedure that helped a man get back on his feet again, pain-free, to inspiring two young women who restored their health and self-esteem through weight management programs, to equipping our First Flight crew with lifesaving, high-tech Night Vision equipment so they could land safely in the middle of the night and assist teen victims of a car crash, to saving a woman from bleeding to death after her baby was delivered so her newborn daughter would have a mother. These stories are about how real people right here in Brevard were helped, healed, or saved. Their life-saving or life-changing stories are the reason Health First provides you with the right healthcare choices, right here! Michael D. Means, Larry F. Garrison, Russell E. 6 The da Vinci high-resolution camera allows us to see the details even better than with an open incision. The model we have at Health First is top of the line. Gynecologic Oncologist John Bomalaski, MD

7 5 ROBOTICS 2011 Modern Surgery Modern Art! When Betty Smith needed a hysterectomy, Gynecologic Oncologist John Bomalaski, MD, with Health First Physicians recommended the new robotic da Vinci Surgical System. The new robotic surgical system at Holmes Regional Medical Center allows major surgeries to be performed with the smallest of incisions. Smith sailed through the surgery, which Dr. Bomalaski performed just before Thanksgiving. I m doing really well, says the West Melbourne resident. Bomalaski and MIMA Urologist Andrew Zabinski, MD, form the core of the da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery team at Holmes. Recovery is much quicker, and this helps our patients tolerate any additional treatment better, says Bomalaski. Before da Vinci, surgical options included traditional surgery with large, open incisions or laparoscopy. However, the high-definition da Vinci robotic system allows maximum precision and control, yet requires only a one-to two-centimeter incision. It allows for delicate surgery in deep places that are hard to get to, explains Bomalaski. The system is particularly beneficial for complex Urology and Gynecology cases, including cancer surgery. With the potential for significantly less pain, shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, and better clinical outcomes, the da Vinci system offers a win-win option. 8 6 HEALTHY AGING 2011 Oasis of Hope Merilee Riopelle can't fathom what life would be like without the help of Health First Leeza s Place and the Health First Aging Institute. In 2008, after her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer s Disease, Riopelle left a career she loved as well as her home in Minnesota to move here (Suntree) and care for her parents. It was very hard for my dad, says Riopelle. It was a tough go for Riopelle, too, who suddenly found herself parenting her parents. Then Riopelle's sister suggested that she check out Health First Leeza s Place, which offers education and empowerment for caregivers of Alzheimer s and other chronically ill patients. Through Leeza s Place, Riopelle also connected with the Health First Aging Institute, where her 85-year-old mom, Madonna Riopelle, is successfully being treated for dementia. Geriatrician Visa Srinivasan, MD, at the Aging Institute s Melbourne office developed a treatment plan that has staved off the disease, allowing Riopelle s mom to continue functioning. Her condition hasn t become worse for two years now, Riopelle said. Madonna and husband Leonard go out to eat every week and she s still capable of helping with some of the household duties, Riopelle said. I go once a week [to Health First Leeza s Place] for caregiver meetings. It costs nothing and is a great resource. Volunteers take care of your loved ones while we re meeting. I find how lucky I am compared to some of the other caregivers. Some of them are in their 80s taking care of children in their 50s. 9 7 V I S I T W W W. H E A LT H - F I R S T. O R G M.I.L.D. PROCEDURE 2011 Pain-free at Last Pain used to be the constant companion of Charles Billias. Like many others who struggle with this condition, Billias I couldn t walk or get out of a car, says Billias, city manager of Cocoa Beach and a Black Belt in Karate. says he tried injections of cortisone. That helped, but the pain came back. I dreaded mornings. Years of practicing Karate and other sports had compressed his spinal cord due to thickened ligaments a condition called spinal stenosis. When a co-worker enthusiastically told Billias about the Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression (M.I.L.D.) procedure, he sought the help of Interventional Pain Specialist Tejash Dungarani, MD, with Health First Physicians at Cape Canaveral Hospital s Pain Clinic. All Dr. Dungarani needed was an hour to free Billias from pain. The same evening, I was able to work, says Billias. The image-guided M.I.L.D. procedure shaves ligaments to decompress the spinal nerves, relieving pain. Using only local anesthetic with conscious sedation and a needle the size of a small hole punch, no sutures are required. It s tremendously less traumatic with very low risks, says Dr. Dungarani first to offer M.I.L.D. in Central Florida. Billias agrees: It made a big difference." I m pleased that patients who have suffered for years can be relieved of their debilitating spinal pain with this minimally-invasive procedure that I began offering for the first time in Brevard at Cape Canaveral Hospital. 10 8 PRO-HEALTH & FITNESS CENTERS 2011 On the Straight and Narrow Path to Weight Loss Eating out and traveling are a dieter s nightmare, but Karen Rodriguez not only manages to enjoy the sweet life, she even manages to lose weight at the same time. So, what s her secret for success? Since joining Health First s Pro-Health & Fitness Centers LivFit (formerly called Pro-Fit ) weight-loss/lifestyle program in 2009, the Melbourne resident has lost 80 pounds. Rodriguez just returned from a six-week trek around the United States and Canada and still eats out every day, but what she learned during the 15-week LivFit program keeps her on the right track. Her weight loss has been textbook perfect," says Pro-Health & Fitness Center Dietitian Susie Bond, RD/LD. She followed all the principles, utilizing the resources, so now she s maintaining her ideal body weight. Life wasn t rosy for Rodriguez after she was involved in an accident in 2000 that left her despondent, suffering from weight gain related to medication. Pro-Health s behavior specialists, trainers, and dietitians were her mentors on the journey back to health. They changed my life," she says. Now a poster girl for weight loss, Rodriguez visits LivFit classes to inspire others. She was determined to find something that worked, says Bond, and she has! 13 11 V I S I T W W W. H E A LT H - F I R S T. O R G MIRACLE IN BIRTH SUITES 2011 Happy Ending Little Gianna Grace has an almost constant grin. The healthy, happy six-month-old has quite a lot to smile about because of the life-saving actions of Drs. Mark McTammany and Samuel Pellegrino, and the Holmes Trauma and Birth Suites teams, who saved her mom s life. Early on the morning of May 16, Kathleen Gilbertson started hemorrhaging. She was scheduled for a Cesareansection two days later, but now she couldn t wait. This was her fourth baby and her previous pregnancies were complicated by a life-threatening condition called placenta accreta, making it difficult to remove the placenta after birth. The Vero Beach resident was rushed by ambulance to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where after an emergency Cesarean-section and safe delivery of sixpound Gianna Grace by Dr. McTammany and the Birth Suites team, she underwent an emergency hysterectomy and bladder repair. The Birth Suites team enlisted the help of Dr. Pellegrino and the Trauma team, who along with a number of other physicians gave her transfusions of more than 250 units of blood and plasma during multiple returns to the Operating Room for the next 24 hours. When she woke up three days later, she had no idea what had happened. Dr. Pellegrino told me it was a miracle I was alive, she says. That same day, still in the Surgical ICU, Gilbertson held Gianna Grace in her arms. I will never forget the staff at Holmes, says Gilbertson. They are incredible. Just minutes later, I started hemorrhaging again, Gilbertson says. Caring Accountability UNDER COVER OF DARKNESS...

14 12 FIRST FLIGHT 2011 First Flight Saves the Night The accident happened late at night on a wooded road when young people were driving home from a party where alcohol was readily available. First Flight s air ambulance crew was quick on the scene, able to land in the pitch dark thanks to their new Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) that allow the pilot and crew to see all possible obstructions. Night visibility is a serious issue for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) flight crews. It can be very risky, says Chief Flight Nurse Bill Campbell. Earlier this year the Health First Foundation funded NVGs for First Flight crew members to wear during night flights. They're the same type the U.S. Military uses," Campbell notes, making the night as clear as daytime, even when landing in almost total darkness. Although the National Transportation & Safety Board recommends that EMS flight crews wear NVGs, many programs still lack them due to their significant expense. The project included four pairs of NVGs along with aircraft conversion equipment and funding for crew training at a total cost of $100,000. First Flight s pilot and crew members now wear NVGs during all night missions. It literally makes the difference between night and day, adds Campbell.

16 14 FOUNDATION 2011 Heartfelt Charlie Ragland gives from the heart and what a big heart he has! Believing in both hard work and community, he considers himself wealthy when it comes to friends and opportunities to give back. That s why he was designated a Grand Samaritan a title given to Health First Foundation donors who support community health outreach in a major way. In the past few years, Ragland has contributed more than $30,000 towards health programs. If you give, you always get back twofold," Ragland says. Retiring two years ago from a lifetime in the restaurant industry, Ragland says he ll never retire from helping others. A tireless supporter of United Way, Freedom 7 Senior Center, Rotary Club, and one of Cape Canaveral Hospital s biggest advocates, Ragland volunteers for the Foundation s golf tournaments, scholarship drives, and auctions. He has no doubt that supporting Health First is the right thing to do. Recently, Ragland s heart stopped beating during heart surgery. The highly skilled surgeons at The Heart Center discontinued general anesthesia, and consciously sedated him to continue the surgery. I could see and hear everything and was so impressed. I can t tell you how proud I am to be part of this system, he says. Although I m retired from my day-to-day job, I ll never retire from helping others. That s a life-long investment and it s the right thing to do. 17 15 GIVING BACK 2011 Healing Body and Soul Carolyn Wilt, RN, heals both bodies and souls. I combine my Nursing career with the teachings of God, says Wilt, who serves as a faith-based nurse at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Melbourne. Wilt and Stephanie Cranfield, RN, are the first two nurses to participate in the new Faith Community Nursing Program sponsored by a Health First Foundation grant. Cranfield is Wilt s counterpart at Grace United Methodist Church on Merritt Island. Cape Canaveral Hospital Chaplain Jon Arnold, MDiv, BCC-APC, developed the local church-based health ministry with threeyear funding from the grant. By drawing upon the sensitivity and experience of a nurse from each church s congregation, we re thinking outside the box, says Chaplain Arnold. Functioning beyond the confines of the hospital, Carolyn and Stephanie visit with parishioners and address their questions, he explained. With our great faith community here in Brevard, this program can help us more effectively treat patients in their own faith contexts. In addition to providing support, Wilt and Cranfield promote healthy lifestyles through education as well as outside resources. Our main priority is to heal body, mind, and spirit by listening, teaching, and being there for our fellow parishioners, Cranfield said. 18 16 BABY SAVED IN ED 2011 In the Blink of an Eye One moment 14-month-old Roan was happily playing next to his mom, Myong Wright, in their Palm Bay home s garden. Then when she turned around he wasn t there. I was frantic, says Wright. She searched desperately for Roan who had found his way past a not-totally-latched security gate and under the cover of their pool. I never suspected he could get in there, says Wright, who found Roan unconscious in the water. She immediately administered CPR, critical training available for all parents through Health First, then rushed him to Palm Bay Hospital s Emergency Department (ED). When they got here, he was unresponsive, says former ED Manager Kathy Cohen. It was touch-and-go for a while. We were concerned about brain damage, but thanks to Wright s quick actions, there was none. After being stabilized, Roan was transported to Arnold Palmer Hospital in a specially-equipped ambulance. A week later, Wright and her husband brought Roan back to the ED, this time just to say thanks. We were ecstatic to see them. We exchanged hugs, kisses, and happy tears, Cohen says. And Wright notes, They were unbelievably supportive, at a time when I was completely hysterical. Trust Assurance Palm Bay resident Myong Wright with her son Roan Life-saving skills

19 17 HOSPICE 2011 Circle of Compassion Alice Lacomba, 99, enjoys nothing better than watching her beloved New York Yankees. In 2008 she moved from New York to Palm Bay to live with her daughter, Alice Garcia. Although Mom Alice suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and congestive heart failure, she enjoys life, thanks in part to Hospice of Health First. Hospice has done wonders for us, says Garcia. The Hospice team nurse, social worker, chaplain, certified nursing assistant, and volunteers help take care of Mom Alice and provide respite for her caregiver daughter. Hospice assists with medication deliveries and even provided a hospital bed and lift chair. Some Hospice staff are able to speak Spanish with Mom Alice, who was born in Puerto Rico. Garcia was able to be at her husband s bedside during his twomonth recuperation after acute pancreatitis because Hospice was able to step in to assist Mom Alice. When the Garcia s two grandsons graduated from high school, they were able to attend their cross-country graduations in California and New York because Hospice welcomed Mom Alice to the William Childs Hospice House where she was a guest for five days. Anything you need, Hospice is there," says Garcia. It has been such a blessing for my husband and I to be able to entrust the care of my 99-year-old mom, who needs constant care, to the staff at the William Childs Hospice House when we were temporarily unable to care for her at home. 21 19 VIERA HOSPITAL 2011 Viera Hospital Sets Benchmark for Hospital Facilities in Brevard 2011 should prove to be a banner year for health care in Brevard, thanks to state-of-the-art Viera Hospital, which opened in April. The new five-story, 250,000-square foot, 100-bed acute care hospital offers a comprehensive continuum of health care just minutes from the I-95 corridor. The Viera community, as well as residents throughout Brevard, will be proud to call Viera Hospital their own, said Pamela A. Gatto, chairman of the Viera Hospital Board of Directors. Viera Hospital serves as the keystone of a unique 50-acre campus that includes the Pro-Health & Fitness Center and the Medical Plaza at Viera Health Park. The stunning hospital facility, which features the latest technology, was designed for total patient comfort, from its soothing spa-like color palette to the green building techniques that enhance environmental quality. All the amenities are here, including a spacious café overlooking the scenic campus courtyard with its sparkling fountain. Inpatient rooms and observation beds are rich in comfort. Cutting-edge technology is a given at the new hospital. Take, for example, Health First s VitalWatch, providing two-way audio/ video monitoring by critical care specialists in all Intensive Care Unit (ICU) rooms, and the ecaremobile critical care service units available at the bedside of non-icu Viera Hospital patients. Both add an extra level of care to the already outstanding standards. Viera Hospital conveniently places emergency and acute-care facilities right in the backyard of one of Brevard s fastest growing neighborhoods. This dynamic community can now easily access full medical and surgical capabilities, inpatient and outpatient diagnostic services, a 12-bed Intensive Care Unit, and a 24/7 Emergency Department.
