After a few months, however, I realized these kids had profound insights to share. Yes, I was helping them, but they were helping me, too. All children who are hurting should attend Bright Star. SPOTLIGHT: Bright Star A Shoulder for Grieving Children John Thistle, Hospice of Board Chairman, and Lacie Morgan at Camp Bright Star. The loss of a parent or loved one can be a life-changing event, especially for a child. For many of these children, the best gift is a simple one a shoulder to lean on during this time of great need. Recognizing the value and necessity of a support system for grieving children, developed Bright Star, an innovative program located in Melbourne that provides support for kids ages three to 18 as they face the loss of a loved one. 7 Opening Doors to Exceptional Health Care Delivering high-quality care requires identifying and meeting the dynamic needs of our growing community, including the improvement and expansion of our services and facilities. Currently, a $131 million expansion is underway at Holmes Regional Medical Center. Slated for completion in October 2006, the new facilities will include a brand new Emergency Department and Trauma Center, an increased number of private rooms, and the new Heart Center. The New Heart Center at Holmes Regional Medical Center The Heart Center will double the size of Holmes while serving as home base for the Heart Institute, a system-wide initiative that boasts the latest inpatient and outpatient technology to be found anywhere in the region. Holmes new 43,000-square-foot Emergency Department will improve access to emergency care for the more than 60,000 patients who pass through its doors each year. And, because more than half of Holmes emergency cases are heart-related, we re situating the new Emergency Department near our nationally-recognized cardiac care center. By locating these services in close proximity to each other, we will enhance the experience for patients and their families and visitors. The Holmes expansion reflects s commitment to ensuring Brevard County s healthcare needs are met and exceeded. With the the state s number one ranked heart program, the region s only trauma center, and state of-the-art technology, Holmes is the epicenter of the Space Coast s healthcare community. As such, we recognize we have a responsibility to keep pace with the changing needs of our community, and this expansion does just that and more! Chris Finton, MD Medical Director of the Heart Institute and Vice President of Medical Affairs for Holmes Regional Medical Center 10

GIVING BACK BEGINS WITH OUR PEOPLE 12 The 6,000-plus associates, 1,000-plus medical staff and board members, and 2,000-plus volunteers who make up the team stand on the front lines of our commitment to give back. Generously caring for patients and reaching out to our neighbors, their efforts reveal the very heart of s mission. In an effort to create opportunities for our team members to give back, we ve developed a series of initiatives that encourage charitable giving on the part of our employees. Through these programs our associates donate their time, professional skills, and in some cases, their money all in the name of improving our community s health. Perhaps one of the best examples of our employees generosity is the EAGLES program, which stands for Every Associate s Gift Leaves Everlasting Spirit. This initiative, which has helped raise $600,000 since its inception, encourages associates from all areas of to contribute to educational and fundraising efforts. SPOTLIGHT: Brevard Health Alliance Hope for Those Who Need it Most Ensuring medical care to all members of our community is at the core of our commitment as a not-for-profit healthcare system. In 1991, Holmes Regional Medical Center provided the leadership and financial resources to establish H.O.P.E., a system of free clinics and mobile health teams providing critical medical care, medications, and access to 110 volunteer specialty physicians for those who would otherwise go without. The individuals served by H.O.P.E. through the last 15 years are not only the homeless, but are also our neighbors and friends who have fallen on hard times. Our commitment to our community s health further motivated to explore model programs for expanding critical health services and creating access for 70,000 uninsured individuals. The creation of the Brevard Health Alliance, our county s only Federally Qualified Health Center, provides these members of our community with a medical home. This entity is the direct result of leadership, commitment, and the financial support of. With our ongoing contribution of $3 million in cash and in-kind services, this newly created not-for-profit will ensure the availability of these critical services for years to come. Since the creation of Brevard Health Alliance, 6,000 patients have accessed more than $1 million in discounted medical care and $2 million in free wholesalepriced medications. Further, our network of specialty physicians has treated 2,000 patients free of charge. Thanks to Brevard Health Alliance, everyone in our community has access to the care they need. The patients I treat at the Brevard Health Alliance could not be more appreciative. I m proud I have chosen this program and the people it serves as a priority in my life. Danielle Boucher, MD Physician Volunteer Brevard Health Alliance 13

Other giving initiatives arise as the needs of our community change and as our world changes. Early last year, associates donated more than $32,000 in the name of tsunami relief. Months later, several Health First employees donated their time and money to the relief efforts following Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma. In the end, our associates contributed more than $60,000 to storm relief. These examples highlight how our associates give back. However, our employees do their part 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It s the very nature of their profession. From laboratory technicians in our hospitals and nurses at our William Childs Hospice House, to exercise specialists in our fitness centers, to physicians who volunteer their time through the Brevard Health Alliance, the people of give back every day Community Benefits The 2006 EAGLES Steering Committee. It s our family s mission to provide healthcare services that improve the health and well being of the entire community, including those least able to afford these services. The generosity of our associates is inspiring. Every day at work, they demonstrate deep compassion and true excellence with their patients and customers. Even more telling are the substantial contributions to our community they make on their own time. They consistently go above and beyond by generously sharing their time, their money, and their hearts with those in need. All of us in Brevard County are blessed by their ability to positively transform lives, both at work and throughout our community. Robert W. Suttles Vice President of Human Resources In fiscal year 2005, : Provided more than $125 million in charity care and care for those unable to pay. Assisted cancer patients with medications and cancer treatments valued at $600,000 through our Cancer Assistance Program. Gave more than 1,400 flu shots to members of the community. Donated more than $100,000 in direct monetary support to other charitable organizations in our community. Provided support for Brevard Health Alliance exceeding $1.8 million. Also during 2005, associates: Pledged more than $230,000 for local United Way agencies. Contributed more than $60,000 to the American Red Cross to help victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Participated in gift-giving to local Adopt-a-Family and Brevard County Foster Children s holiday programs. Walked or jogged in fundraisers for the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Lung Association, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, March of Dimes, and National Multiple Sclerosis Society, among others. Sent care packages for U.S. soldiers in the Middle East through the Adopt-a-Soldier Shoebox Program. Participated in medical missions in Central and South America. Donated more than $87,500 through our employeegiving program called EAGLES (Every Associate s Gift Leaves Everlasting Spirit) that was used in 2005 to: - Print 15,000 domestic violence handbooks - Purchase glucose monitors and supplies for qualifying patients with diabetes - Provide scholarships for children to attend the Bright Star Camp (a program of Hospice of for children who have suffered the loss of a loved one) - Sponsor the Life: Keep It Going Conference and other transplantation and donor awareness programs - Produce the annual Tiger Team calendar promoting organ and tissue donation - Provide funds for transplant patients to attend the International Transplant Games - Support the Center for Child Development - Support the William Childs Hospice House 14 15

COMMITTED TO QUALITY COMMITTED TO YOU For more than a decade, has focused on setting the standard for quality health care on Florida s Space Coast. In fact, delivering the best care possible to all members of our community is our top priority. In this pursuit, we equip our hospitals with state of-the-art medical technology; we recruit healthcare professionals who are among the top leaders in their fields; and we work to ensure our facilities are comfortable and accessible to all members of our community. Our ability to give quality care requires ongoing investment in both our physical resources and our human resources such as the VitalWatch electronic intensive care unit (eicu ) program. Hospice of Volunteers Phyllis Conwell, Marge Turner, Wayne McLaughlin, Mary Oliver, and Nell Clavette. SPOTLIGHT: VitalWatch Keeping a Watchful Eye on Our Patients For critical care patients in our hospitals, a life-saving gift is around-the-clock medical attention. To add an extra level of patient care, implemented the VitalWatch electronic intensive care unit (eicu ) program for each of our three hospitals in Combining state of-the-art telemedicine technology, computer software, and 24/7 electronic monitoring, our board-certified critical care physicians and specialized nurses monitor up to 62 patients in the intensive care units (ICUs) from a central location outside the hospitals. By adding VitalWatch s additional layer of care, patients receive critical medical attention when they need it. Currently, all three of s intensive care units located at Cape Canaveral Hospital, Holmes Regional Medical Center, and Palm Bay Community Hospital utilize VitalWatch technology. Since its opening in 2004, the VitalWatch program has resulted in a 30 percent reduction in ICU mortality. 16 eicu is a registered trademark of VISICU, Inc. 17

In addition to programs like VitalWatch, during the past year we invested millions of dollars into a range of initiatives to improve Brevard County s healthcare infrastructure. From a dramatic renovation and expansion of Holmes Regional Medical Center, to the ongoing improvement of our medical technology, our dedication to meeting Brevard s healthcare needs no matter how complex sets us apart as our community s healthcare leader. We are also working with other area hospitals and the Brevard County Health Department to form a Health Information Network to support privacy-protected data sharing. This initiative, which was made possible by a grant from the Agency for Health Care Administration, focuses on the development of a web-based system that will provide physicians and other healthcare practitioners 24-hour electronic access to a patient s current medical information. SPOTLIGHT: Viera Health Park Compassion is the basis for everything we do. We are leaders in clinical excellence, but we are people first people with a heart for serving others. There is not a more personal, more intimate service than health care. Our patients are not diagnoses; they are mothers, fathers, sons and daughters who we treat as if they were our own. Our relationship with our patients and the trust they place in us is everything. The Next Chapter in Health Care There s a new health park on the horizon in Viera, one of the fastest growing regions in Brevard County.
