6 Our Speakers & Panelists Marcus Engel Marcus Engel is a professional speaker and best selling author whose messages provide insight and strategies for excellent patient care. His keynote presentation, The Other End of the Stethoscope has been witnessed by tens of thousands of health care professionals and his books are used in scores of nursing schools to teach the basic foundations of caregiving. Dr. Constance Kalanek, PhD., RN ND Board of Nursing Executive Director Dr. Kalanek is the current ND Board of Nursing Executive Director. There she has given a voice to nursing across North Dakota since Previously, Dr. Kalanek served as a professor of nursing at the Medcenter One College of Nursing in Bismarck, ND. Dr. Betty Rambur, Ph.D., RN Professor of Nursing - University of Vermont Originally from North Dakota, Dr. Rambur s education and career progressed from registered nurse, to nurse practitioner, and then on to two graduate degrees from Rush University in Chicago. She worked in community medicine and institutional cooperation. With a Ph.D., she began teaching at the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D., becoming a professor and ultimately chair of the nursing division. She current serves as a professor of nursing at the University of Vermont.

7 Tessa Van Doorne, MSN, RN Tessa Van Doorne, MSN, RN is the Clinic Manager for Sanford Health Occupational Medicine Clinic in Dickinson. Previously she was a nurse Manager in Long-term care in Dickinson as well spent 4 years as the Medical Services Director at the Dakota Women s Correctional and Rehab center in New England, ND. Tessa graduated with her BSN from Dickinson State University and finished her MSN with an emphasis in leadership from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, AZ. Tessa worked with Dr. Connie Kalanek and the ND Board of Nursing for her MSN practicum doing work on a rule revision with legislative rules dealing with scope of practice for Registered Nurses in ND. Dr. Karen Rohr Dr. Karen Rohr, FNP, FAANP is an Associate Professor and Director of Bioethics and Faculty Formation at the University of Mary. Rohr received her undergraduate ( 79) and graduate ( 87 & 96) degrees from the University of Mary and ( 06) the University of North Dakota. Elected into the ND House of Representatives in 2010, Rohr serves on the House Education Committee and is Vice- Chair of the Government and Veterans Affairs Committee.

8 Our Speakers & Panelists cont. Evelyn Quigley, MN, RN Evelyn Quigley is a retired Health Care Executive from Sanford Health and has over 45 years of nursing and executive experience. She was designated Chief Nursing Executive Emeritus at Sanford Health/MeritCare Health System. Evelyn obtained her Master s in Nursing Administration and Minor in Business Administration from the University of Washington and her Bachelor s of Science Degree in Nursing from Moorhead State University Moorhead. She has a Diploma in Nursing from Sisters of St. Joseph School of Nursing. Deborah Haagenson, BSN, RN Deborah Haagenson, BSN, RN has served as the Vice- President of Patient Care and Chief Nursing Officer at CHI St. Joseph s Health in Park Rapids, MN in Deborah graduated from the University of Wisconsin with her Bachelor s Degree in Nursing in Deborah serves on the national Executive Council for Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI). Deb is a an RN member of the Minnesota Board of Nursing and is currently serving as Board President. She has been on the Minnesota Board since 2009 and serves on the Nursing Practice Committee. Deb also served on the North Dakota Board of Nursing in the 1990s where she also served as President.

9 JoAnn Sund, MS, RN JoAnn Sund, MS, RN has been the Director of Professional Nursing Practice at Sanford Health in Fargo for 15 years. Joann received her Bachelor s degree in Nursing from the College of St. Scholastica in 1980 and a Master s degree in Management from the University of Cardinal Stritch in Joann obtained her certification in Executive Nursing Practice in Joann was appointed to the North Dakota Board of Nursing in 2002 and served eight years, including two as president. Mary Ann Foss, RN Mary Ann Foss, RN has been retired since Previously, Mary Ann worked for the North Dakota Department of Health for 18 years in multiple positions including nurse consultant, program director, division director and member of the Community Health Section leadership team. Mary Ann received her AD/RN from Dickinson State College in 1982 and her BSNc from MedCenter One College of Nursing in Mary Ann has served in a leadership position for several professional organizations and worked as a registered nurse in a variety of settings including as a medical-surgical charge nurse, ICU primary care and emergency room head nurse.

20 ND Center for Nursing Legendary Nurse Awards 2015 ND Legendary Nurse Award: Founder Demonstrates exceptional Leadership in the development of the North Dakota Center for Nursing. Constance Kalanek, PhD, RN, FRE has been involved in advocating for the development of the North Dakota Center for Nursing for over 12 years. Dr. Kalanek was instrumental in an initial attempt at creating the Center through legislation in 2001 and again in After a traumatic legislative session in 2003 which resulted in marked changes in the practice act, Dr. Kalanek hosted a meeting of nursing leaders, consisting of multiple organizations to develop a collaborative voice. The ND Nurse Leadership Council was created after this meeting and was the precursor to the ND Center for Nursing Board of Directors. She has been instrumental in securing funding for the Center through submission of an Otto Bremer Grant and ultimately working with the North Dakota Board of Nursing to allocate licensure fee funding to support the work of the Center. Patricia Moulton, PhD is the founding Executive Director of the North Dakota Center for Nursing. Dr. Moulton, although not a nurse, has demonstrated leadership and commitment to the nursing profession in North Dakota and at the national level. Dr. Moulton has been involved with workforce related research since 2002 with the ND Nursing Needs Study and is President-elect of the National Forum of State Nursing Workforce Centers. She has developed the organizational framework for the ND Center for Nursing through extensive committee and work groups. Margaret Reed, MBA, MSN, BSN, RN, President of the North Dakota Organization of Nurse Executives, had the courage to become the first President of the North Dakota Center for Nursing Board of Directors. In 2011, when the Center was formed, Margaret provided solid leadership throughout her term that ended in Through her

21 exemplary leadership, she was instrumental in forming a solid board of directors. She continues to serve as Past-President and remains active in multiple projects with the ND Center for Nursing. Linda Shanta, PhD, MSN, BSN, RN was instrumental in obtaining an Otto Bremer Foundation Grant to initiate the formation of the North Dakota Center for Nursing. In collaboration with several other ND licensees, Dr. Shanta has worked behind the scenes to support the implementation of the Center that has become available to all of the nursing community in North Dakota. ND Legendary Nurse Award: Advocacy Excellence in advocating for the nursing profession and mentoring others to become advocates. This could include through public policy or other advocacy such as through media/presentations. Evelyn Quigley, MN, BSN, RN has been an advocate for nursing throughout her entire career and beyond. She has served in positions of leadership for nursing organizations as well as the Chief Nurse Executive for MeritCare (now Sanford Health). She has advocated in the areas of nursing education, advanced nursing practice, advances in health care delivery and health care coverage and the role of nursing. Most recently she was a candidate for ND Senator in her district. Cheryl Rising, FNP has been a Family Nurse Practitioner since 1996 and was one of the founding NPs that created the North Dakota Nurse Practitioner Association. Cheryl has been the Legislative Liaison for the NDNPA for a number of years and has demonstrated excellence in providing advocacy for nurses throughout North Dakota. Cheryl has worked hard to develop productive relationships with member of the legislature, which have been critical as Nurse Practitioners fought for full scope of practice in North Dakota. In this legislative session, she was always willing to go to the capitol to attend hearings, testify and otherwise support advocacy efforts for numerous bills that were tracked by the nursing community. She has been an exemplary mentor and support for nurses throughout many nursing organizations in North Dakota.

22 ND Legendary Nurse Award: Faculty Achievement Demonstrates excellence in teaching, engaging students in the love for nursing and supports student growth. Stacey Hutzenbiler, MSN, RN is an outstanding faculty member in the undergraduate program at the University of Mary Nursing Department. She teaches the Mom/Baby/Labor and Delivery units in the junior level and teaches NCLEX review for the senior students. Her classes are interactive and educational and goes above and beyond to help struggling students and to ensure students are learning material. She works hard to improve her own methods and practices and is always available to listen to a student s viewpoints and ideas. She loves nursing, loves educating and loves teaching the students. ND Legendary Nurse Award: Leadership Demonstrates exceptional leadership (either in a formal or informal role) in either their place of employment or in a non-profit or nursing organization. Lonna Milburn, PhD, MSN, BSN, RN is currently the Senior Director of Programs at Creative Associates Inc. in Washington D.C. Dr. Milburn s nursing leadership career which began in North Dakota has impacted nurses and health care systems in 50 countries of the world. In North Dakota, Dr. Milburn contributed to Nurse s Broader Agenda for Health Reform in North Dakota, developed a North Dakota Consortia that was awarded a USAID contract to start primary health care in Turkmenistan and has served as a nursing faculty at Dickinson State University and the University of North Dakota. Much of her nursing leadership work has focused on advocating for children in adversity worldwide. JoAnn Sund, MS, BSN, RN, CENP has served in multiple leadership roles as a unit manager, a case manager and most recently as the Director for Nursing Practice at Sanford Medical Center. She has led the implementation of the Nursing Scope and Standards for Professional Nursing Practice as well as the development of the Professional Practice Model for Nursing at Sanford. She has also served on the North Dakota Board of Nursing and the practice committee.

23 ND Legendary Nurse Award: Nurse Executive Provides exceptional leadership in an executive role for Nursing including Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer, Dean or Director. D Arlyn Bauer, PhD, MS, BSN, RN developed the nursing program at Sitting Bull College over the last thirteen years. She wrote the curriculum, guided the program through the accreditation process and has served as administrator of the program. Dr. Bauer is also the Curriculum Committee Chair at Sitting Bull College and Many Sitting Bull Students have graduated from the program and moved on to fulfill their lifelong careers in nursing. Jan Kamphuis, PhD, MS, BSN, RN is currently the Chief Nursing Officer/Executive Vice President for Sanford Health in Bismarck and has been a certified administrator since Dr. Kamphuis leads the only Magnet Organization in North Dakota and is a leader for change and is a clinical leader which inspires nurses to be their best, keeping the patient at the center and measuring their impact and contributions to nursing practice to assure the highest quality of care. Margaret Reed, MBA, MSN, BSN, RN has been the Chief Nurse Executive at Altru Health System for over twenty years. Margaret s dedication to quality, safe patient care together with mentoring and supporting her nursing staff is core to her excellence as a nurse executive. As Altru Health System was established, Margaret was one of the main architects for the clinical organization. Margaret has been a visionary leader at Altru and has emphasized the importance of selfcare for staff and has been instrumental in the creation of spaces and programs to transcend the environment to a healing space. Margaret has also been a nursing leader in community organizations such as the United Way.

24 ND Legendary Nurse Award: Research Excellence in promoting nursing research through the facilitation of research or conducting evidence based practice, quality improvement, nursing or education research. Karen Urban Baatz, MS, BSN, RN, CNS has led the Nursing Research Council at Sanford Health in Bismarck over the past five years. She has led the development of policies and procedures to assure sound and ethical research practices, worked with academic organizations for student access for research proposals and elevated nursing research throughout the organization. She introduced the research showcase which is a creative approach to encourage and support the advancement of nursing research. Karen Robinson, PhD, MSN, BSN, RN is currently a part time Clinical Quality Analyst at Essentia Health and a Nurse Research Consultant at Sanford Health in Fargo. Evidence of her lifetime commitment to the advancement of nursing research is evident in her work to elevate nursing research in the nursing organizational structure at Sanford Health. Dr. Robinson is a charter member of the Xi Kappa At-Large Chapter where she has elevated the important of nursing research by sponsoring scholarly programs that facilitate evidence based practice. Dr. Robinson earned the Best of IMAGE award from the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for her nursing reimbursement research. She has also been an active member of the ND Center for Nursing Research Network group. Dr. Robinson has a unique ability to mentor others to make their important contributions to advance nursing practice. ND Legendary Nurse Award: Evidence Based Practice Excellence in the promotion and utilization of evidence based practice principles in the pursuit of clinical excellence. Stacey Pfenning, DNP, APRN, FNP has been instrumental in promoting Evidence Based Practice throughout North Dakota for many years. Dr. Pfenning co-created the State Online Journal club which provided an interactive forum for discussing clinical practice questions and for

25 posting CATs or clinically appraised topics. This journal club formed the basis for the current Evidence Based Practice Resource Center at the North Dakota Center for Nursing. She has presented at many state and national conferences providing her set of evidence based practice tools to numerous nurses. Last fall, she presented a Bootcamp on Evidence Based Practice that provided participants with many tools to implement in their organization. Dr. Pfenning is a champion and truly passionate about promoting evidence based practice! ND Legendary Nurse Award: Volunteer Has provided time and energy in developing and achieving the goals of the ND Center for Nursing through our leadership team, our action coalition or our board of directors. Becky Graner, MS, BSN, RN has provided tireless leadership through her volunteer work with the North Dakota Center for Nursing. In addition to her consulting work that the Center has greatly benefited from, Becky has been an active member across several projects. She has been an active member of the North Dakota Action Coalition and has provided passionate support and encouragement to all of the groups as we formed our online leadership program. In our Evidence Based Practice project and our Statewide Preceptor Program, she has always been willing to provide feedback and work effectively within the teambased structure of the ND Center for Nursing Leadership Team.
