1 An Invitation to Apply: East Tennessee State University College of Nursing Associate Dean for Academic Programs THE SEARCH The East Tennessee State University (ETSU) College of Nursing invites applications, nominations and inquiries for the position of Associate Dean for Academic Programs. The Associate Dean for Academic Programs is responsible for providing academic leadership for the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of both undergraduate and graduate programs. Additionally, the Associate Dean for Academic Programs is responsible for administrative management of faculty and student support services. The individual holding this position needs to be a knowledgeable, strong nurse leader with the ability to develop a collaborative wellarticulated, strategic and visionary plan for the day-to-day operations of the academic nursing division of the College of Nursing. The Associate Dean for Academic Programs reports directly to the Dean of the College of Nursing. Rank and salary will be commensurate with the individual s prior experience and accomplishments. ETSU is a doctoral/research university serving approximately 15,200 students. The University is located in the heart of southern Appalachia surrounded by beautiful rivers, lakes, and mountains. The College of Nursing, part of an Academic Health Sciences Center, has over 50 faculty members and enrolls over 1,600 nursing students 1 in its Pre-BSN, BSN, MSN, DNP and PhD programs. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION The responsibilities of the Associate Dean for Academic Programs include: Primary Functions Provides academic leadership for the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of both undergraduate and graduate programs. Additionally s/he provides administrative management of faculty and student support services. Is a knowledgeable, strong nurse leader with the ability to develop a collaborative well-articulated, strategic and visionary plan for the day-to-day operations of the academic nursing division of the College of Nursing. Conveys a strong sense of advocacy and support for the faculty and staff under his/her supervision and creates an environment of engagement and participation. Feedback is encouraged, valued, and incorporated at all levels. 1 Enrollment in Fall 2016.
2 Is accessible and committed to effective and open communication with the Dean, Faculty and Staff. Additionally, s/he is responsible for influencing college-wide process academic changes that demonstrate proactive achievement of student academic and meaningful clinical outcomes. Supports inter-professional learning through collaborative working relationships within the academic health science division and external to the health science division. Demonstrates high-level administrative capabilities including management of competing priorities, budget management, staffing, effective conflict resolution, team building, strong communication skills, and ability to collaborate and negotiate. Values and supports personal and professional growth and development of faculty and staff. Assists the academic directors to develop quality metrics, assures all state and national accreditation reporting information is collected and reported timely, monitors academic program outcomes and assists program directors to develop initiatives to improve outcomes and/or publish/articulate best practices. Holds direct reports accountable for areas of responsibility. Provides strong leadership and guidance for Shared Governance initiative. Participate in strategic planning of the college, especially in the area of enrollment management, student recruitment, and admission, progression, and retention procedures. Oversees University and College policy pertaining to undergraduate and graduate programs. Oversees course inventory. Has ultimate responsibility for processing/tracking curricular proposals from college to university to TBR as applicable. Acts as a liaison/representative with community and university on all matters pertaining to academic programs. Facilitates and monitors the evaluation of undergraduate and graduate programs using standards and outcomes data. Ensures the integrity and integration of all academic programs. Oversees clinical site planning with the Directors of Undergraduate and Graduate Programs, local educational institutions, community, and clinical agencies. Integration with practice clinics is a priority. Actively participates in multicultural, rural, and interdisciplinary academic activities. Writes and collaborates with others in preparing academic based grants. Oversees semester schedules for fall, spring, and summer in collaboration with the Director of Undergraduate Programs and the Director of Graduate Programs. Advises BSN, MSN, and doctoral students as needed. Oversees the development/distribution of recruitment materials, brochures, and web information. Collaborates with the administrative team in setting benchmarks for student enrollment; Collaborate with the Technology Manager to assist faculty enhancement of online course offerings and to identify complementary software. Identifies and recommends faculty personnel, budget, and other academic resource needs to the Dean, based on joint planning with the Associate Deans, Directors, and coordinators. Secondary Functions Represents the College to internal and external constituencies; Actively participates in strategic planning; Engages in the application of relevant, new and emerging technologies for classroom and online instruction; Facilitates faculty workload assignments with Program Directors; Oversees and facilitates faculty search in compliance with college/university policies and procedures and makes hiring recommendations to the Dean; Serves as a contact person for potential faculty, provide requested materials, and provide college-wide orientation for new faculty;
3 Addresses faculty issues and concerns when not resolved at the Director level and prior to the Dean level; Serves as Reviewing Official 2 for annual faculty and staff Human Resources evaluations. Provides consultation to faculty and directors to ensure compliance with college/university policies and procedures. Student Support Functions Oversees University and College policy pertaining to students in nursing programs. Actively participates in multicultural, rural, and interdisciplinary student activities. Addresses student issues and concerns when not resolved at the Director level and prior to the Dean level. Oversees student orientations and graduation with the Directors of Student Services, Undergraduate Programs, and Graduate Programs. Provides leadership in addressing student academic concerns. Other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS AND LEADERSHIP CHARACTERISTICS The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following qualifications and leadership characteristics: Minimum Qualifications Doctorate in Nursing, PhD or DNP; graduate degree in Nursing. Eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Tennessee. Achievement in teaching, research, and service commensurate with tenure and appointment at a rank of Associate Professor or Professor. Commitment to faculty development and mentorship for teaching, research, and practice; Demonstrated leadership ability. Effective communication and interpersonal skills consistent with the leadership role. A minimum of five years in nursing education with experience at both the baccalaureate and graduate levels. Higher education administrative experience. Preferred Qualifications Ongoing history of successful extramurally funded research and publications. Knowledge and Abilities Is an effective nurse leadership within and outside of the College. Ability to communicate effectively. Supervision Given and Received Performs as an executive under minimal direct supervision. Works for and is evaluated by Dean of the College of Nursing. Supervises administrative and support staff (supervises the Director of Undergraduate Programs, Director of Graduate Programs, Director of Student Services, Simulation Coordinators, CE Coordinator, Information Research Technician 2, Executive Aides, and Graduate Assistant/Tuition Scholars as assigned). Provides administrative oversight to Undergraduate Programs, Graduate Programs and Student Services.

5 Situated in northeast Tennessee, ETSU s main campus is located in Johnson City (population 63,000), with a branch campus in Kingsport, a location in Elizabethton and two primary sites for the college of Medicine and College of Pharmacy at Mountain Home Veteran s campus. The University offers courses and cohort programs at many locations through its service region and online courses across the nation and around the world. Johnson City, Kingsport and Bristol (TN/VA) are part of the Tri-Cities Tennessee/Virginia region, with a population exceeding 490,000. Johnson City is located near the state lines of Virginia, Kentucky, West Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Interstate highways I-26 and I-81 provide immediate access to the area, as does the Tri-Cities Regional Airport. COLLEGE OF NURSING 3 The College of Nursing at East Tennessee State, part of an Academic Health Science Center, has over 50 faculty and enrolls over 1600 students in the College s Pre-BSN, BSN, MSN, DNP and PhD programs. Highlights of the College of Nursing Fully accredited BSN and MSN programs. Baccalaureate Programs and Tracks: Traditional LPN-BSN, RN-BSN, Dual Degree and Accelerated Second-Degree BSN tracks. Masters Programs and Tracks: FNP, nursing education, nursing informatics, nursing administration, and Clinical Nurse Leader MSN specialties. Participation in the statewide MSN-Regents Online Degree Program. Undergraduate Programs Traditional BSN Program: The traditional BSN program consists of five semesters of major courses after completion of the University s core requirements. 6 LPN-BSN Program: The LPN-BSN program consists of five semesters of major courses after completion of the University s core requirements. The BSN degree is awarded after successful completion of all nursing course work qualifying the student to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). RN-BSN Program: The RN-BSN program provides a pathway to obtaining a BSN degree for RNs with associate degrees or hospital certificates. The program is delivered online on either a full-time (3 semesters) or part-time (5 semesters) of nursing courses. Dual Degree RN-BSN Program: The Dual Degree RN-BSN program operates under an articulation agreement with several community colleges and leads to both an associate degree in nursing and a BSN degree. Several courses are taken the first summer at a cohort community college location. Accelerated 2nd Degree BSN Program: The Accelerated 2nd Degree BSN program is available to students holding a bachelor s degree from accredited schools in fields other than nursing. The program consists of five semesters of major courses after fulfillment of nursing prerequisites. The BSN degree is awarded after successful completion of all nursing course work qualifying the student to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Masters Programs MSN Regents Online Degree Tracks: The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) through the Regents Online Degree Program (RODP) is a collaborative effort among Colleges of Nursing and the Tennessee Board of Regents system to educate nurses and fill nursing shortages in the health care industry. Specialty areas are: Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Nursing Administration (online hybrid), and Nursing Education. Doctoral Programs Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program: The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree program will prepare leaders in nursing and healthcare who can affect change, apply informatics and data management skills, translate research into evidence-based practice, influence health and social policy for diverse populations, and shape positive health system outcomes. An online/blended format is utilized and both part-time and full-time options are offered. Concentration areas are: Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP), Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), and Executive Leadership. PhD Program: The mission of the PhD in Nursing program is to prepare nurse scientists who will conduct research in nursing and engage in scholarship that will improve health care and health care delivery systems. The mission is achieved through an outstanding and relevant curriculum, delivered by talented faculty who mentor and support the PhD students through their learning experiences. The College is nationally known for its nurse-led centers that provide primary care in rural and underserved settings, and for inter-professional learning experiences. Faculty members of the College conduct research that aims to reduce health disparities, improve health services and systems, and promote high quality nursing education. The program is delivered in an online and blended format. Certificate Programs The College of Nursing has two types of Certificate programs: (1) post-graduate certificate designed for master's prepared RNs wanting to complete coursework to qualify for a national certification exam for nurse practitioners and (2) non-degree certificate program offered in conjunction with the College of Public Health on Health Care Management. Faculty Practice Sites Faculty of the College of Nursing practice at 13 nurse-led sites in Johnson City and other locations in Northeast Tennessee.
