1 An Invitation to Apply: DePaul University Chair of the Department of Nursing leading the way to higher educational standards for professional and advanced practice nursing THE SEARCH DePaul University is seeking applicants for the position of Chair of the Department of Nursing. Programs include Master s Entry to Practice, Bachelor of Science Degree Completion Program, Post-Master s Degree Certificate, Nurse Practitioner and Nurse Anesthetist 1 Programs. Located in Chicago, DePaul is the nation s largest Catholic university, noted for its diverse student body and commitment to community engagement. The Department of Nursing is within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Chair represents the Department of Nursing within the University, as well as regionally, nationally and internationally. Interdisciplinary collaboration within the University and commitment to mentoring faculty in teaching and scholarship is a priority. The Chair leads the Department in fostering a positive and productive work environment that promotes excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, service and advising. Additional responsibilities include: working with national professional educational accreditation organizations and collaborating with the University Office of Development and the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research to secure external support. The Chair reports directly to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Charles Suchar, PhD. QUALIFICATIONS Candidates must have: A demonstrated leadership record with academic administrative experience, particularly in graduate level nursing education A demonstrated record of scholarship with a current research agenda An earned doctorate from an accredited university with a graduate degree in nursing; an active RN license and eligibility for such licensure in Illinois Eligibility for tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor Demonstrated experience in mentoring faculty and facilitating nursing scholarship/research RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION The Chair represents the Department of Nursing within the College and the University, as well as regionally, nationally and internationally. Responsibilities include: Interdisciplinary collaboration within the University Mentoring faculty in teaching and scholarship to achieve their goals Leading the department in fostering a positive and productive work environment that promotes excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, service, and advising. Working with national professional educational accreditation organizations Collaborating with the University Office of Development and Office of Sponsored Programs and Research to secure external support Day-to-day management of the Department s administration, academic programs, financial management, personnel management and scholarship/research Working collaboratively with faculty, other Chairs, persons with administrative responsibilities throughout the University and community members and leaders Interpreting trends in nursing, nursing education and health care to University constituents Expanding and developing the Department s reputation for excellence Fostering the development and maintenance of educational programs of high quality and professional relevance that are supportive of the mission and goals of the University Maintaining cooperative working relationships with collaborating departments outside of the Department of Nursing 2
3 Joining with the faculty to represent the Department on appropriate University and community committees Joining with the faculty to represent nursing, nursing education and the Department to individuals and groups within the University, the professional community and the community-at-large Fostering collaborative relationships with appropriate community institutions existing and new -- that support state of the art clinical and professional education, service and scholarship/research CHARACTERISTICS OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATE The ideal candidate for this position will personify the mission and core values of DePaul University and the mission and philosophy set forth by the Department of Nursing. History The Department of Nursing was founded in 1947 as a RN-BS completion program for registered nurses. The Department expanded to include a graduate program in 1953 and an undergraduate generic program in Academic Programs Bachelor of Science Degree Completion Program This program is offered to registered nurses seeking to complete their Bachelor s degree in nursing. Students may complete liberal studies requirements within a traditional College of Liberal Arts & Sciences or a competency-based (School for New Learning) curriculum. 4
5 Master of Science Degree Program This program is for nurses with a bachelor s degree seeking graduate-level preparation in nurse educator/scholar and nurse administrator specialties. Master of Science Degree Program in Advanced Practice Nursing This program is for registered nurses with the minimum of a Bachelor s degree in nursing seeking specialty education in advanced practice nursing. This degree is broadly defined to include nurse anesthetist, nurse practitioner and clinical specialist in population-based practice. Program areas in direct care include: adult nursing, family nursing, pediatric nursing, medical surgical nursing, community health nursing and nurse anesthesia. Post-Master s Degree Certificates Post-Master s degree certificates are offered in advanced practice nursing to registered nurses with the minimum of a Master s degree in nursing seeking specialty education in advanced practice nursing. Master s Entry into Nursing Practice Program Admission requirements include one year of biology courses (designed for science majors) and one year of chemistry (including organic and inorganic chemistry with lab). Additional admission requirements include statistics and a broad background in the liberal arts and sciences. Anatomy, physiology and microbiology courses are recommended for admission but not required as content is also integrated throughout the program. Students complete basic and advanced nursing courses in nursing science, nursing research, health and nutrition, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and health assessment along with clinical rotations in adult nursing, child nursing, maternal-infant nursing, mental health nursing and community health. Students also complete the graduate nursing core of nursing theory, nursing research, ethics, health policy, epidemiology, and health care systems design/management. The program includes development of competencies for the professional nurse as provider of care, communicator, teacher, manager, leader, and researcher as well as competencies in health assessment, health systems design and management. Students enter the program with a wide range of educational experiences in the sciences, arts and humanities.
