Purpose Plan coordinate and provide advanced level breast care knowledge, education and management across the care continuum of breast disease, from the point of diagnosis, through treatment rehabilitation, follow up, palliative care and community awareness programs, in accordance with recognised clinical practise guidelines. The role aims to work within the rural communities of the Bundaberg and Rural Health Facilities of Wide Bay in both acute and community settings, promoting breast care awareness and as a member of a multidisciplinary team.

2 Your key responsibilities Fulfil the accountabilities of this role in accordance with Queensland Health s core values, as outlined above. The Breast Care Nurse (BCN) will develop, implement and promote evidence based Breast Care Nurse standards and policies that are compliant with relevant professional industrial and legislative requirements for the region. The position will also provide services to acute and community based clients in accordance with prescribed professional and ethical standards (eg McGrath Foundation, Queensland Nursing Council (QNC). Clinical Practice: Provide advanced clinical knowledge of health needs, preferences and circumstances to clients with breast cancer. Continually evaluate the client s condition and response to interventions in a timely manner and modify the breast care management plan as necessary to achieve optimal health outcomes for clients with breast cancer. Communication / Team Participation: Foster a healthy work environment by: o Facilitating teamwork through regular feedback, team maintenance activities, case reviews and maintenance of a communicative environment. o Participating in high quality professional supervision with support from discipline specific professional supervisors and Performance Appraisal and Development. o Working together and communicating with other departments and disciplines within the Bundaberg and the Rural Health Facilities to ensure smooth and effective operation of the Breast Care Service and form strong links to the McGrath Breast Care Nurse in Bundaberg and Cancer Care Team in Wide Bay. o Involvement in Nursing networks and meetings. Leadership / Work Unit Management: Work with members of the multidisciplinary care team to identify and support clients at higher risk, or exhibiting high levels, of psychological distress at the time of diagnosis and on a regular basis using systemic evidence based approach and refer for appropriate support and onwards referral. Participate in the identification, development and implementation of quality and service improvement activities including strategic planning, management of allocated clinical workload, prioritise activities to provide a service which enhances the delivery of Breast Care nursing services within the health service. Qualifications/Professional registration/other requirements Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency with a current annual practicing certificate is essential. Relevant postgraduate qualifications in breast care nursing and at least five years post Registration in either surgical or medical oncology and ideally with at least three years experience as a breast care nurse, women s health nurse, community health nurse is highly desirable. Hold a C Class Queensland Drivers Licence to operate a passenger vehicle. "Potential applicants are advised that Section 63-1A of the Aged Care Act 1997 requires Queensland Health to: (a) Seek a criminal conviction record report from the Australian Federal Police; and (b) Conduct a search of bankruptcy records; and (c) Conduct previous employment and referee checks". 3 Demonstrated ability to clinically supervise subordinate personnel, colleagues and consumers within the acute and community settings. Communication Demonstrated ability to provide advanced clinical skills in advice, counselling and health education to the multidisciplinary team, to the client, their families and the community. Clinical Ability Demonstrated advanced clinical knowledge of health needs, preferences and circumstances to clients with breast cancer, in planning and implementing care. Leadership Demonstrated ability to initiate, plan and evaluate local service improvement with commitment to total quality framework, management, and improved health outcomes. This will be achieved through project management, organisational and planning skills. About the Health Service District/Division/Branch/Unit Visit the Area/District/Division website: The Wide Bay Health Service District (WBHSD) provides health services to a fast growing regional area. The district covers the coastal stretch from Agnes Waters in the north to Maryborough and Hervey Bay in the South and includes the accompanying rural hinterland. Included in the WBHSD are the Fraser Coast Health Service District (Hervey Bay and Maryborough Hospitals and the Yaralla Place Residential Aged Care Facility) and the Wide Bay Health Service (Bundaberg hospital, the main referral centre with health facilities at Gin Gin, Childers, Biggenden, Eidsvold, Mundubbera, Gayndah, Mt Perry and Monto). The WBHSD serves a population of approximately 184,000 residents. Across the district, a range of specialty services are provided including acute care, surgical, medical, maternity, mental health rehabilitation and aged care services. Hervey Bay and Bundaberg Hospitals provide care in some major adult specialties and provide support to the surrounding smaller hospitals in the district. The district has a number of Multipurpose Health Services that provide access to integrated health and aged care services to smaller communities. The district provides a variety of primary and community health services including oral health, child health, school health, health promotion, environmental health, aged care and rehabilitation, aged care facilities, sexual health services and drug and alcohol services. The WBHSD also provides a comprehensive and fully integrated mental health service to residents in both the community and acute care settings. The Wide Bay District is well known for its relaxed lifestyle, natural beauty and local attractions. Bundaberg is located at the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef with access to coral islands and scuba diving. Possibly the most famous beach in Bundaberg is Mon Repos. Located 15 kms east of Bundaberg, Mon Repos is known for having the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on the eastern Australian mainland and is considered one of the two largest loggerhead turtle rookeries in the South Pacific Ocean. For a taste of the Australian bush, Cania George, located in the hinterland west of Monto, is popular for bushwalks and abseiling. Fraser Coast includes the World-Heritage listed Fraser Island, which has a unique and unspoilt landscape including rainforests with abundant fresh water lakes and crystal clear creeks. From July to November, during their annual migration, Humpback whales take time out in the protected waters of Hervey Bay. The whales perform a variety of behaviours providing a spectacular display for visitors and locals.

Health professional roles involving delivery of health services to children and young people All relevant health professionals (including registered nurses and medical officers) who in the course of their duties formulate a reasonable suspicion that a child or young person has been abused or neglected in their home/community environment, have a legislative and a duty of care obligation to immediately report such concerns to the Department of Child Safety. All relevant health professionals are also responsible for the maintenance of their level of capability in the provision of health care and their reporting obligations in this regard.
