1 ISSUE 57 DECEMBER 2014 I am happy to report once again, Canada has been honoured at the 100th meeting of the Radiology Society of North America. A special session was held on Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014 entitled Beyond Diagnosis: How Cardiovascular Imaging Research in Canada is Improving Clinical Outcomes. The session was highly praised and the talks were excellent. This is a great accomplishment! Congratulations to the speakers and supporters. One of the most common themes this year was the need for change going forward. RSNA 2014 President, Dr. N. Reed Dunnick, set the tone in his opening address. His emphasis was on valuebased medicine and patient-centered imaging and was at the centre of all conversations. This confirms the shift away from technology and toward patient care that many have been advocating for along with new methods of healthcare delivery and payment. The traditional fee-for-service model is fading away, to be replaced by payment schemes that emphasize value in healthcare delivery. Imaging informatics can serve as an important role in navigating the shifting landscape and help radiologists improve the quality of their reports, which will be more interactive and easier to understand. Another major development is the expanding offer of Vendor Neutral Archives (VNA,) which is the path to enterprise imaging and the deconstruction of the traditional PACS. We have been pioneers in Canada with our DI-r s, which are large scale regional archives. There was also a lot of emphasis around overutilization of imaging with initiatives such as Choosing Wisely and ACR Select. This is an informatics project that uses the American College of Radiology (ACR) Appropriateness Criteria for a decisionsupport software application. The ACR booth was very busy, and it seems that the software will be widely adopted worldwide. On another note, I am very pleased to inform you that our clothes donation has finally reached Nunavut in time for Christmas. Warm clothes have been welcomed in Repulse Bay and Gjoa Haven. It is very rewarding to know that the children will benefit from our donation when they may need it most. Thank you again for your generosity! I wish you and your family Happy Holidays and a very Happy New Year. May 2015 bring you health, happiness and prosperity. 7 THE RESEARCH CORNER An exciting new research project, lead by Dr. Naveen Parasu, has officially started! The project titled, Tomosynthesis Use in Detecting Subtle and Occult Hip Fractures, will be run out of the Juravinski Hospital over the next six months. The main objectives of the study are to determine if using tomosynthesis in conjunction with x-ray, is better at detecting subtle and occult hip fractures than x-ray along as well as determining if this can reduce the number of required MRIs. MRI scanning is known to be the best investigation for detecting these fractures, but it is expensive, and may not be readily available. Based on the 2011 Statistics Canada Report there are 1,172 hospitals in Canada of which 308 had a MRI machine, with 30% of Canada s total number of MRI machines in Ontario alone (CIHI, 2013). While only 10% of hospitals currently have tomosynthesis, the cost to upgrade their machines to include this application is approximately $45,000, which is much lower than the approximate cost of a MRI. The utility of tomosynthesis has been demonstrated in use for breast cancer screening but only a limited number of studies have been done when it comes to its use in detecting fractures. A small number of studies have been done in using tomosynthesis to detect wrist fractures. These studies demonstrated that using tomosynthesis is superior to that of standard radiography (Ottenin et al., 2012; Geijer et al., 2011). If you have a research project starting, please be sure to Jane Castelli (jane.castelli@miircam.ca) so that it can be included in the next newsletter! 16 MCMASTER MEDICAL CENTRE Congratulations Geri Schweinbenz! Our Gold Medal Winner Geri Schweinbenz had recently competed with her team, KAB (Knot A Breast) in the International Breast Cancer Paddler s Commission Dragon Boat race held in Sarasota, Florida on October 25-26, Geri and her team mates from Hamilton were determined the winners from a photo finish as the final race was very close! The news of having won gold at the event was disbelief and jubilance for the team. This triumph had a personal meaning for Geri as she was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma in May There was no family history of breast cancer and the diagnosis came as a shock. The next eight months, Geri underwent two surgeries, six cycles of chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation therapy. After all this, Geri returned back to work and within nine months, she was working full-time again. Geri credits her family, friends and colleagues for helping her through this difficult time as their care and support meant a great deal. After the cancer treatment, Geri developed lymphedema in her right arm and felt she could no longer participate in sports. She heard of the KAB team from one of her chemo nurses, who was also a breast cancer survivor and KAB member. Geri discovered the KAB team embraced the theory of Dr. McKenzie, a sports medicine physician from Vancouver, British Columbia who in 1996 dispelled the myth that repetitive upper body exercise encourages lymphedema for post treatment breast cancer women. His study proved exercise provided through paddling and Dragon boating actually benefits women with lymphedema which is a side effect following surgery and radiation therapy. Geri trained with her KAB team over a year and a half before the International Breast Cancer Paddler s Commission Dragon Boat Festival, a racing event that occurs every four years. The KAB Dragon Boat racing team is made up of both men and women, and is a floating support group which gives hope to all who are fighting breast cancer and their care givers. Raising awareness about the quality of life after breast cancer is an important component of KAB as cancer survivors can lead full and active lives despite any limitations caused by the disease. The international race had 101 teams from 8 countries competing, all breast cancer survivors. In a very close race, KAB won the Gold Medal in the A division final race. It still feels surreal to Geri, who feels she has come full circle with breast cancer with this comment, What I have learned is that out of this very difficult situation I have gained so much and I have so much to be thankful for! I have my life back! The staff at MUMC & UCC are proud to share Geri s accomplishment with everyone. Please join us in congratulating Geri and the entire KAB team on winning the gold medal in the International Breast Cancer Paddler s Commission Dragon Boat Festival!
