It was a crazy week of education, networking and shopping, and not just for diagnostic equipment. Radiation protection was high on the agenda. There were multiple talks and electronic solutions to capture and monitor dose information. It was interesting to see the linear-no-threshold model challenged by Dr. Hendee, who said that we probably overestimate the risk of cancer at low doses of radiations. It may sound familiar for those of you who heard our own Dr. Doug Boreham at MIIT last year. The technology keeps evolving with vendors showing new developments in portable radiology with increasing availability of wireless plates. Progresses in ultrasound, CT, and MRI show faster and more efficient fusion. New developments in breast imaging with tomosynthesis and contrast enhanced spectral mammography (CESM). There is progress in PET-MR with PET detectors inside the bore and angio-interventional equipment that takes robotics to a new level. On the IT side, PACS is not creating much hype anymore. The talk is zero foot print viewers and cloud computing with vendor neutral archives. IPads are present everywhere and solutions for workflow improvements are in much demand. I am proud to congratulate Drs. Parasu, Finlay, Jurriaans, Kotnis and Ghert for having been awarded a Certificate of Merit for their education exhibit on Postoperative Imaging of Synthetic Graft Reconstruction for Bone Tumors: What the Interpreting Radiologist Needs to Know. It is a great achievement. If I missed anyone else, please forgive me, we ll announce it in our next issue and will mention it at our Academic Galette, which will take place at Lo Presti s on Monday, January 16 th. All residents and fellows are warmly invited. I want to take this opportunity to invite you to submit your nomination for the Academic Radiologist of the Year, which will be awarded to a colleague in recognition of outstanding imaging related research, scientific presentations, publications, exhibits, posters, and grants. I am very pleased to announce that Dr. Melanie Ferri from the JHCC and Dr. Genhee So from SJH have accepted the position of Fellowship Program Co-Directors for a 3-year period commencing December 1 st, They will share responsibilities and work together to promote excellence in education and develop long term plans to maintain an outstanding fellowship program, including the reconstruction of the fellowship web-site. For the first year, Dr. Ferri will be the contact person for correspondence and communications regarding postgraduate education. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Ferri and Dr. So, as I am sure their contributions will make this Fellowship Program a wonderful experience for our fellows. And many thanks to Dr. Michael Patlas, our past Fellowship Director from the HGH, for his contributions and dedication to the Fellowship Program. I wish you all a very Joyful Holiday season, may the New Year bring you health and happiness. Dr. David Koff Chief of Diagnostic Imaging, HHS Chair, Dept. of Radiology, FHS 1 1

Come and celebrate the Galette des Rois A galette (also known as a King cake) is a type of cake associated with the festival of Epiphany in the Christmas Season, in a number of countries. It is popular during this season in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Portugal, Spain, Catalonia, Greece, Cyprus and Bulgaria. One notable type is the Galette des Rois, eaten on the day of Epiphany. Tradition holds that the cake is to draw the kings to the Epiphany. A figurine, la feve, which can represent anything from a car to a small character, is hidden in the cake and the person who finds the trinket in their slice becomes King for the day and will have to offer the next cake. RSNA Certificate of Merit Award Drs. Parasu, Jurriaans, Finlay, Kotnis, Ghert received the Certificate of Merit award for their education exhibit on Postoperative Imaging of Synthetic Graft Reconstruction for Bone Tumors: What the Interpreting Radiologist Needs to Know at the 97 th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America, November 27 th -December 2 nd, 2011, McCormick Place, Chicago Illinois. 6 6

7 Celebrate the Image - David Wormald Radiology s role in revolutionizing modern medicine is cause not only for pride but for celebration, according to RSNA President Dr. Burton Dwyer who opened the RSNA 2011 with the address, Celebrate the Image: How We Changed the Face of Healthcare. Dr. Dwyer spoke to the vast scope of issues we face. The extraordinary advances in radiology over the past 40 years have catapulted medical imaging into a privileged and central role in patient care, academics and research. Dr. Dwyer pointed to the revolutionary role of imaging in early detection, advanced diagnostics, outcome prediction and innovative therapeutics in all sub-specialties. To that end, we are well positioned in Hamilton to embrace the trend towards personalized, patient centered, less invasive, ambulatory, collaborative, quantitative, electronic, innovative, quality-driven and evidence based care. Dr. Dwyer stated that, In the past, we have offhandedly referred to the three A s of radiology availability, affability and ability. As we re-imagine radiology for the future we must highlight four additional A s- accountability, amenable (collaborative), aspirational and adding value. 7 7

8 Medical Radiation Technologists Week The Very Image of Care 2011 City-Wide Celebrations! The week of November 6 th - 11 th, saw Medical Radiation Technologists city wide celebrate their profession and promote The Very Image of Care. St. Joseph s Healthcare Hamilton and Hamilton Health Sciences each held their own departmental celebrations. The generous support from vendors and our own radiologists were much appreciated. On November 10 th, Medical Imaging Technologists from HHS and SJHH gathered at The Scottish Rite Club of Hamilton for an evening of fellowship and fun. We were delighted to draw from our own talent pool and have Ms. Linda Guralski, sonographer from MUMC site showcase her piano keyboarding skills and Mr. Ed Costanzo, PACS Administrator from MUMC entertain us with his vocal talents and tinkling of the ivories during the reception. Thank you, Linda and Ed for providing the ambiance! The evening was officially underway with David Wormald, IAVP; Dr. David Koff, HHS Chief of Radiology; Dr. Colm Boylan, SJHH Acting Chief and Dr. Karen Gulenchyn, Chief of Nuclear Medicine recognizing the MRTs and their contributions as healthcare professionals, and integral in the provision of patient care. Past accomplishments were acknowledged, challenges addressed and the vast opportunities in the future of medical radiation technology were highlighted. The over 130 attendees enjoyed a wonderful dinner in an enchanting, historical facility originally built and owned by George Tucker of Tucker Tobacco, Following dinner, guests were wowed by the magic and illusional imagery of Coby Elimelech. Coby is well-known in the entertainment world and has performed for the Prime Minister as well as toured with David Copperfield. He truly amazed us during his pre-dinner walk-abouts and the after-dinner stage performance. Thank you to Lauren Aquilina and Ken Mascola for volunteering and taking to the stage as magician assistants! A world of thanks to our MC for the evening, Betty Ng, manager at SJHH and HHS and also to Julie Childerhose, MRT at SJHH and Kim Harper, Administrative Coordinator at SJHH for organizing this celebration. Our profession as MRTs is ever changing, but we are resilient. We continue to grow and provide exceptional care to our patients. Our faces are the ones that represent our profession as The Very Image of Care. We look forward to next year s celebrations and please let us know if you have any hidden talents that we can tap into! 8 8

11 Hamilton General Receives New MRI Second MRI arrives at Hamilton General Hospital On Thursday October 13 th, two lanes on Barton Street were closed and a hole was knocked out in an exterior wall of Hamilton General Hospital for the delivery of a new state-of-the-art MRI machine. It took several hours for the new magnet to be secured, hoisted up the side of the building, carefully maneuvered through the narrow hole in the wall and placed in its new location inside the renovated space in the Diagnostic Imaging unit. A new state-of-the-art MRI machine is hoisted up the side of the Hamilton General Hospital, making its way to a newly renovated space in the Diagnostic Imaging unit

12 MUMC Receives New Fluoroscopy Unit New Toshiba Ultimax-I system at MUMC! Diagnostic Imaging would like to thank Dr. Peter Fitzgerald and the McMaster Children s Hospital for contributing to the purchase of a new multipurpose fluoroscopy unit, the Toshiba Ultimax-I for Diagnostic Imaging at MUMC. The new machine was much needed and replaced a unit which was 20 years old and beyond end-of-life. The Ultimax-I was installed and turned over to Diagnostic Imaging for use October It is an extremely flexible unit and is capable of performing procedures on the smallest of infants to large adults. With the Ultimax-I flat panel technology, we are able to reduce radiation dose and acquire high quality imaging. The tabletop can be lowered and patients can easily and comfortably transfer themselves onto the tabletop. The C-arm allows us to image in multi-directions. This new unit allows Diagnostic Imaging staff to provide the necessary imaging while delivering the best in patient care at MUMC. This Ultimax-I is highly appreciated and a great addition to Diagnostic Imaging s G.I. and fluoroscopy area! 13 Congratulations Women s Health Center/ Ontario Breast Screening Program St. Joseph s Healthcare, King Campus According to the Assessment Indicator Reports for the Ontario Breast Screening Program for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011, the Women s Health Center at St. Joe s King Campus, has met or exceeded standards on all quality indicators and has the most impressive results in the Hamilton/ Niagara/ Haldimand/Brant Region. Congratulations to all the hard-working and dedicated staff for the excellent quality they contribute to the OBSP program! St. Joseph s Healthcare, King Campus Women s Health Center/ Ontario Breast Screening Program Goes Digital! Finally and with great anticipation the staff at the Women s Health Center look forward to receiving a new digital mammography unit. The King St. Campus is the second largest organized breast screening center in Hamilton. The volumes and patient needs continue to rise. We require faster high resolution technologies to enable us to service more clients, because, without a diagnosis, there is no cure. The arrival and installation of the new unit is estimated to be in place the end of February

14 T Good Hand Hygiene Prevents The Spread Of Infection Why is hand hygiene important? Hand hygiene refers to removing or killing microorganisms (germs) on the hands. When performed correctly, hand hygiene is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of communicable diseases and infections. In health care, hand hygiene is used to eliminate transient microorganisms that have been picked up via contact with patients, contaminated equipment or the environment. Hand hygiene may be performed either by using soap and running water, or with alcohol-based hand rubs. When should soap and water be used? The mechanical action of washing, rinsing and drying removes transient bacteria present on the hands. Hand washing with soap and running water must be performed whenever hands are visibly soiled. Any type of plain soap may be used. However, bar soaps are not acceptable in health care settings except for single patient/resident personal use. If used, bar soap should be kept in a self draining holder that is cleaned thoroughly before new bars are put out. Liquid soap containers should be used until empty and then discarded. Soap containers must not be topped up, as there is a risk of contamination of residual soap. Antibacterial soaps may be used in critical care areas such as ICU, or in other areas where invasive procedures are performed. When should alcohol-based hand rubs be used? Alcohol-based hand rubs/gels/rinses are the preferred method for decontaminating hands, provided they contain more than 60% alcohol. They are widely used in health care settings, or in situations where running water is not available. Using alcohol-based hand rub is better than washing hands (even with an antibacterial soap) when hands are not visibly soiled

15 The Back Page A Message from Dr. Seuss Annual HHS Staff Holiday Teas Theodor Seuss Geisel is better known to the world as Dr. Seuss. His books are timeless and much of the humor is best appreciated by more mature audiences. The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" reminds us of the true spirit of Christmas. All teas are from hours Click on the link below for dates and locations xyzpdqabc=0&id=25&action=detail&r ef=2387 And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store? What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?
