Join the BC Children's Hospital and Sunny Hill Volunteer's Facebook Page: Past Events: Halloween Scavenger Hunt: Thank you to all the fabulous BCCH Volunteers who helped make this year's Annual Hallowe'en Scavenger Hunt a big success! Thanks Child Life for making this happen once again!! Here is the link for the Global News video for this year:
Therapeutic Clown Program: You may have seen Fizzie and Cosmo around the hospital spreading joy and laughter. What you may not know is that the Therapeutic Clown Program is funded by the Auxiliary to the BC Children's Hospital. Here are some of the wonderful things that patients and families have to say about this program: "Just the medicine we needed" - Father on 3M "Thanks for the joy. We can always use more of that around here" - Mom in Respiratory Clinic "What a great job you do! She never smiles" - Christina's dad after smiley visit "They are as funny as clowns" -Sliva (5 year old) TY Teeny Chaser #7 Draw: The newest addition to the BC Children's Hospital Gift Shop are the Teeny Ty's. They are adorable, fluffy, and stackable! Chaser #7, The Dragon, is a limited edition Teeny Ty that was donated to BC Children's Hospital. Here is Daphne Cole holding the little fellow before handing him over to the winner of the draw.
Volunteer Corner is a new initiative that will appear in every CHAT, to help us get to know our fellow volunteers a little better! We will be doing short interviews with BCCH and Sunny Hill volunteers. You can choose to answer annonymously or become CHAT-famous and include your name and/or picture! Here is the first set of interviews, written by Samatha Lui (BCCH Volunteer and JAC/Communications Member) Samantha: What did you do this summer? Volunteer 1: I worked at a research lab at CFRI and presented a poster presentation on my research in July. Volunteer 2: I worked at the BC Cancer Research Center and also went to San Francisco for the first time. Loads of fun! Samantha: What is your role at the hospital? Volunteer 1: I provide comfort to patients and their families by putting providing non-medical support. Volunteer 2: I volunteer on the weekends in Child-Life and provide companionship to patients in various wards including Oncology, ICU and Surgery. Samantha: What are your future aspirations? Volunteer 1: I hope to attend medical school one day and put my volunteer experiences into practice to make an impact on the community. Volunteer 2: I hope to be able to get into medical school and use all the knowledge and experience I have gained to become a oncologist. Upcoming Events: Want to get involved? JAC and Communications will be meeting again in January in the Volunteer Resources Room. All Youth Volunteers interested in getting more out of your volunteer experience at BCCH please attend or contact daria.hutchinson@hotmail.com
What is JAC? JAC stands for Junior Auxiliary Committee. The role of this committee is to represent hospital youth volunteers as an adjunct to the Auxiliary to BC Children's Hospital Board. This is done by: - Supporting youth volunteers (ages 16-30) by providing them with additional growth and leadership opportunities - Providing flexible commitment - Planning and delivering events that promote volunteer interaction and education, fundraising, and other events - Offering committee and leadership experience and volunteer hours - Providing the opportunity to meet and work with other BC Children's and Sunny Hill Volunteers What is Communications? The Communications Committee consists of two parts: CHAT/E-news and Social Media CHAT/E-news: Four CHAT newsletters get released per year during the fall to spring months. E- news are released during the months between CHAT releases or as needed. Both feature information about important events and updates, and as a means to connect BC Children's and Sunny Hill volunteers. Communications committee members help form the CHATs by writing articles, performing interviews, and inputting ideas. Commitment is variable and depends on how many articles you sign up for. Social Media: This is a newer committee that is dedicated to promoting The Auxiliary to BCCH through social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Our goal is to release daily posts that provide volunteers, staff, and the public with information about the Auxiliary's great programs and events. Flu Shot Clinics: written by Kate Harries (Recreational Therapy Volunteer at Sunny Hill and JAC/Communications Member) Getting an annual flu vaccination is important because it helps your body prepare for the flu virus by exposing it to what the virus looks like. This allows your body to begin to build a defence before you actually encounter the bug, essentially giving your immune system a head start! All volunteers at BC Children's, Sunny Hill and BC Women's Hospitals are required to be vaccinated. There will be a clinic on December 5th at BCCH/BCWH, Room D210 from 1pm to 7pm. **Please ensure to inform Volunteer Resources staff once you have been immunized. If you have NOT yet received your flu vaccine please be aware that after December 1st you MUST wear a mask during your assignment if you are in a patient contact area (which includes all public space: Gift Shops, Navigation). Staff will be monitoring your compliance daily after December 1st. Thank you!
Phase 3 of C&W Redevelopment Project approved to move ahead: Taken from PHSA News Submitted by: Dave Ingram, Chief Project Officer, C&W Redevelopment Project The next phase of the BC Children's and BC Women's Hospital Redevelopment Project is moving forward with government approval of the phase 2 business case. This phase will cost $84 million and is scheduled to begin in Phase 3 will include renovations to the existing BC Children's and Women's main building (1982 building), the relocation of Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children (Sunny Hill) to the newly renovated space, and the creation of 10 additional single maternity care rooms at BC Women's Hospital. Sunny Hill is a specialized centre that provides development and rehabilitation services for children, youth, and their families from across British Columbia. The relocation of Sunny Hill from its current site on Slocan Street to the newly renovated space will enhance the ability of care providers to efficiently deliver high quality patient care and increase opportunities to spend more time with patients. It will also facilitate an easier transition for children and youth on their rehabilitation journey, and multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary care plans can be implemented with all programs and care providers on the same site. The addition of 10 single room maternity care spaces to the existing 18 will accommodate more women with low-risk pregnancies to remain in a private room for their entire stay. This allows for increased comfort and privacy and improved continuity of care by the same nursing team during labour, birth, and postpartum. Mother and their babies will be able to stay together for the duration of their stay. Thank you and congratulations to all the people involved in the planning and development of the phase 3 business case - we are one step closer to better serving the needs of children, youth, women and families throughout British Columbia.
One year until the opening of Teck Acute Care Centre (TACC): "In the coming weeks and over the next year, the BC Children's and BC Women's Redevelopment Project communications team will be providing you with a variety of print and digital support materials in an effort to keep C+W frontline staff informed about all of the upcoming activities related to the TACC and UCC, the move and opening day" - Gillian Hobbs, Communication Coordinator Submitted by: Bernelle Yan, Communications Officer, C&W Redevelopment Project The countdown continues! November marks another significant milestone - one year until the opening of the new Teck Acute Care Centre (TACC) and Urgent Care Centre (UCC). In recognition of all the hard work that has gone into planning and preparations thus far, BC Children's and BC Women's leadership will be visiting units to deliver coffee, tea, and treats. Watch for Linda Lemke, Chief Operating Officer of BC Children's Hospital and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children or Cheryl Davies, Chief Operating Officer of BC Women's Hospital and Health Centre when they stop by to update all staff on our progress. Enjoy some refreshments, grab a commemorative pen, and take the time to ask any questions you may have about the TACC or Urgent Care Centre (BCWH). As part of the one year out celebrations, a 30-day social media campaign has been launched. Every day during the month of November, stories, videos and information about what the TACC and UCC will mean for staff, physicians, and BC families will be shared via redevelopment project Facebook, Twitter and Youtube channels. Please connect with us to view, share, like, and retweet
