2 Environmental and Occupational Health Support Services Lights! Camera! MACtion! 2 Are those fire trucks in front of JHE? No worries. This is not a REAL emergency. It may not be a real emergency, but we will be setting TWO controlled fires to mock residence rooms in the centre of campus in front of JHE on September 2:00pm and 3:30pm. MacDraft, the initiative s name, is based on the Undergraduate Welcome Week 2011 MacDraft: A Fire Safety Initiative theme of Lights, Camera, MACtion! Housing and Conference Services, EOHSS, Security Services and the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards in a joint effort with Hamilton s Fire Prevention Division have collaborated on this student focused learning experience. Even though this is part of the Welcome Week schedule, attendance to this event is open to all members of the McMaster community. Registration is not necessary. This will be an opportunity to gain a first-hand perspective on the actual effects of a fire, provide a real-time illustration of how quickly fire can spread and expose people to key campus fire safety messages. Under the recently passed Bill 160, Ontario is transforming the province s health and safety system and increasing protection for workers. Changes up to this point, are primarily administrative in nature and will not have any serious impacts to the McMaster University Safety Program. These changes do set the stage for long term changes to the way health and safety is managed by all parties in Ontario. Current Amendments include: Establish the Ministry of Labour as the lead for accident Change on the Horizon - Safety Act Amended Risk Management Manual Update The following RMMs have been updated and approved by Senior Management since the April Issue of the Workplace Wellbeing newsletter: RMM Occupational Health and Safety Act RMM Standard Operating Procedures Program RMM Process and Equipment Purchases and/or Modifications For a full listing of all RMMs, please visit: Hazard Reporting prevention, transferring it from the WSIB; Appoint a new Chief Prevention Officer to coordinate and align the prevention system; and Create a new prevention council, with representatives from labour, employers, and safety experts, to advise the Chief Prevention Officer and the Minister. These changes also give the Minister of Labour oversight of the province s Health and Safety Associations as well as the education, training and promotion of workplace health and safety. Stay tuned for more updates. All hazards MUST be reported. By reporting hazards, we identify the need for action to take place to prevent an injury or incident. The process for communicating hazards here at Mac remains flexible and includes multiple options. Supervisors are responsible for the management and correction of hazards in their respective areas. If a hazard is reported to you and the area is not your responsibility, do you know who to pass that information on to? Check out the new General Contacts Page for Health & Safety concerns found here: In the event that the hazard is immediately dangerous to a person s life or health, please phone your local emergency number [Main campus ext. 88, MUMC ext or dial 911 for off-site locations].
3 Employee Health Services 3 New Incident/Injury Report Form Coming this Fall - New Incident/Injury Report Form This fall, look for the new Incident/Injury Report form. Environmental & Occupational Health Support Services (EOHSS) and Employee Health Services (EHS) have made improvements to the Incident/Injury Report form. The form is now three pages including instructions, rather than two. This is to allow employees, supervisors, and visitors to better explain the incident description and corrective actions. You can access the Incident/Injury Report form under the Prevention category at the following link: Updated Accident Investigation Training EOHSS and EHS are pleased to present an updated Accident Investigation training session built to provide supervisors and employees with the skills required to properly complete an accident investigation, the associated forms including the Incident/Injury Report Form and to guide individuals through the Work Reintegration process. The training session will now include three sections as follows: Accident Investigation; Incident/Injury Report Form: Where to Start and How to Finish; and Work Reintegration. Remember, this training is mandatory for all supervisors. For more information, a complete list of training dates and registration, please visit: Is your Health & Safety Training Up-To-Date??? As employees of the University, we are required to complete safety orientation (available online) and the six basic EOHSS training sessions Fire Safety, Asbestos Awareness, Ergonomics, Slips, Trips & Falls, WHMIS (Office or Core) and Violence & Harassment Prevention in the Workplace. This is in addition to site-specific training such as Chemical Handling & Spills, Gas Cylinder and Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) to address local hazards as identified on your required Job Hazard Analysis (JHA). As a reminder, all supervisors are required to complete Accident Investigation. Supervisors are also required to complete Due Diligence training at least once every three years. In order to understand what training is mandatory for you, speak with your supervisor and review the health and safety training matrix found at: Any questions may be sent to eohss@mcmaster.ca Employee & Family Assistance Homewood Human Solutions Homewood Human Solutions is McMaster s Employee & Family Assistance Program provider. Their services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and are free to employees and their dependents.
