1 ISSUE 49 FEBRUARY 2014 I have the great pleasure to announce that Dr. Karen Finlay has agreed to take the position of Associate Chair Education and Departmental Education Coordinator. The Associate Chair Education role is designed to promote excellence in training, teaching and educational scholarship in undergraduate teaching and postgraduate programs in radiology. This includes leadership and guidance in supporting and directing educational programs for learners, as well as educational support, promotion and mentorship for faculty members. This is a well-deserved promotion for Dr. Finlay, who has made our residency program such a success during her 11 years tenure. I have no doubt that this new challenge will give her an opportunity to bring our program to new heights, while allowing me to concentrate on building more support for research in our department. Congratulations to Dr. Finlay! You may remember Dr. Patrice Bret, the former Chief Radiologist at UHN, MSH and WCH, and Chair at University of Toronto. With more than 25 years as a visionary leader in radiology, Dr. Bret understands that one of the most important elements of success, and unfortunately often ignored, is happiness. It has been a subject of reflection and debate for centuries. Today, it remains a hot topic in the academic literature, the business world and in the lay press: it even recently made the cover page of the Harvard Business Review. The renewed interest comes from the realization that happiness is a critical component of success not only for individuals, but also for organizations. The past 15 years of research in Positive Psychology, shows that happier people live longer, are healthier, have better relationships, have a higher income and are more creative that their counterparts. There are also simple strategies that can be implemented in our daily lives that can reliably and sustainably raise our levels of happiness. In the work environment, conventional wisdom holds that if we work harder, we will be more successful and if we are more successful, then we will be happy. Recent discoveries in positive psychology show that this formula is actually backwards: Happiness fuels success, it is not the other way around. When we are happy, our brains become more engaged, we are more creative, motivated energetic and productive at work. I have invited Dr. Bret to come to our Department and share his approach in raising the level of happiness in the work place, as he recently trained as a Coach and studied the Science of Consciousness and the Psychology of Happiness. I will keep you posted with the details of his visit when they become available. Let s aim for a very Happy New Year and a Happy Department! 7 MESSAGE FROM DAVID WORMALD As you may know, the strategic and operational leadership for the Imaging Research Centre (IRC) at St. Joseph s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) was transferred from SJHH Research Administration to Dr. Gulenchyn and myself. As stated by Dr. Gulenchyn, The Centre is a tremendous resource for research programs in the city, and a driver of discovery of its own accord. The co-location of MR and PET/CT units provides many opportunities that we need to continue to realize. To that end, our first step in the IRC renewal process will be to engage our key stakeholders to provide feedback as it relates to the future directions, opportunities and challenges. This is a valuable phase of work to inform and guide the development of the IRC priorities and goals. It is our intention to provide you with regular updates on the IRC strategic planning process. Department of Radiology Research Day 2014 Further details regarding the venue, agenda and abstract submissions will be available soon. SAVE THE DATE Wednesday, April 23 rd, 2014 Watch for further details 7 7

8 EXCELLENT PATIENT CARE The following appreciation notes were received by Patient Relations from our patients: I am writing to express my appreciation for the high quality of care I received recently at Juravinski Hospital. I attended the ultrasound clinic for a breast ultrasound, after having received a vague and worrying report from a private community clinic in December. As it was the day after some areas of the hospital had been closed due to flooding, I anticipated that staff would be stressed and running late. I could not have been more wrong! From the time I walked up to reception (my first time at the hospital) until I left after my test, everyone I encountered was helpful, kind and welcoming. I would especially like to give special credit to Alana, the technician who did my test. She greeted me warmly, chatted and confirmed my info as we walked down the hall, and made me very comfortable as I got ready. During the test, she told me exactly what she was doing, asked permission to touch me before the examination and shared information in a respectful, yet personable way. She was so friendly, and had such a great smile and sense of humour, that I was at ease the whole time. Dr. Griffiths joined us as well at the end of the test, and was also so kind and respectful. She listened to my concerns about the community clinic with patience, while at the same time being non-judgemental and reassuring. I just want to let you know as well how much I appreciated their care, and how lucky we are to have such caring professionals in our community. Thank you Alana Chisholm (pictured) and Dr. M. Griffiths! Congratulations to all who provided an excellent patient experience! Just a quick note to commend yet another outstanding HHS team member. Yesterday, I had an MRI. As you can imagine, I wasn't exactly looking forward to it, but I have to say emphatically that the experience was so much better than I anticipated, thanks entirely to the efforts of a wonderful technician named Wayne. This was my first HHS MRI and the first one where I had titanium screws in my head. So I had quite a few questions. Despite the fact that it was understandably busy and many people were waiting, Wayne patiently and expertly addressed all my concerns. He was the epitome of compassion and truly seemed concerned with making the experience as tolerable as possible. And I was grateful that throughout the MRI itself, he offered encouraging words and made me feel considerably calmer than I ever felt during MRI's at other health institutions. I can honestly say that, thanks to Wayne's empathy, patience and humour, yesterdays MRI was the best I've ever had! I would be most grateful if you could let Wayne (and his supervisor) know the difference his kindness made. He turned an unpleasant experience into something that was quite bearable. I really believe that great people need to be recognized and Wayne clearly fits into that category. Thank you Wayne Giglia! 8 8

9 THE RESEARCH CORNER Over the past five years the Department of Radiology has seen a sharp increase in the amount of funding it has been awarded. In 2008, researchers in the department were granted just under $150,000. Last year, researchers brought in just under $1,000,000! Although the Department of Radiology remains one of the lowest funded departments, we are pleased to see a steady increase in grants applied for and awarded. With a New Year comes new opportunities for funding your research! The Ontario Center of Excellence (OCE), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) and the Ministry of Research and Innovation (MRI) have all recently put out a call for proposals or implemented new funding opportunities. To learn more about which opportunity might be best for you, feel free to contact Jane Castelli, Project Manager at MIIRC@M at jane.castelli@miircam.ca. Don t wait too long, many of these opportunities are closing out soon! 9 9 Submitted by: Jane Castelli

10 ST. JOSEPH S HEALTHCARE - Diagnostic Imaging Staff Peer Recognition Award DI Staff at St Joseph s Healthcare are proud to recognize their peers! The Peer Recognition Committee asked staff to send names to the committee of any DI staff they think deserve to be recognized for actions that go above and beyond their job. This can include kindness towards to each other, promoting team work, or for any extra care they show patients. The staff that get nominated by their peers are told of the recognition, and the committee, along with management, select a "winner" per month. This winner receives a Tim Horton's gift card. Pictured below are some, but not all, of DI staff at St Joe's that have been recognized. Thank you for the extra effort! 12 THE BACK PAGE FAMILY DAY - Monday, February 17 th Family Day was first held in Canada in the province of Alberta in It is supposed to reflect the values of family and home that were important to the pioneers who founded Alberta, and give workers the opportunity to spend more time with their families. Family Day was introduced in Saskatchewan in 2007 and in Ontario in British Columbia observes Family Day as a statutory holiday for the first time in One of the reasons for introducing Family Day was that there was a long period when there were no holidays from New Year's Day until Good Friday. Hamilton Health Sciences observes the Family Day stat holiday on Monday, February 17 th, Enjoy the day! Tips for keeping warm! Wear several thin layers, rather than one thick layer. This is because they trap warm air close to the body. Go for clothes made from wool, cotton or fleecy fabrics, if possible. Draw your curtains as soon as it gets dark to stop the heat escaping and the draughts coming in. Keep any windows and internal doors closed when it s cold this will keep heat inside, where you most need it. A lot of heat is lost through the head and neck, so if you re chilly indoors, try wearing a hat and scarf. Your body keeps warm by burning food you've eaten, so make sure you have regular hot meals that contain carbs, such as potatoes, pasta, bread and rice. Try porridge with hot milk for breakfast and soups and stews for lunch and dinner. If you re sitting down, a shawl or blanket will provide extra warmth. You should also try to keep your feet up, because air is cooler at ground level. Wear warm clothes in bed. When it s really cold, wear thermal underwear, bed socks and even a hat.
