2 GUIDELINES WHEN ATTENDING WCFID TRAINING DURING 2018 Please remember: If you book for training and then don t arrive, you will be charged for the workshops if you haven t given us 24 hours notice of your cancellation. This is because we incur costs such as trainer fees, handout notes, and catering on your behalf. FORUM NEWS - WE ARE GROWING! The WCFID is excited to announce a re-structure, four new posts, and two new staff members! Aimee Isaacs has been appointed Programme Manager of the WCFID, and will now be leading our programmes team which includes all our training and resource development activities. Her new address is programmes@wcfid.co.za. s sent to the old address will be forwarded to the new address. Desiree Douglas moves into the position of Training Co-ordinator, taking over all logistics and details of our annual training programme. Maurisa Moloto, a speech therapist with an interest in community development, will be joining the WCFID on 8th January as the Community Trainer and Resource Developer. Her address is trainer@wcfid.co.za. As a result of the Right to Education campaign, the WCFID has appointed an Advocacy Officer, Vanessa Japtha, also starting on 8th January. As a teacher with much experience in inclusive education and advocacy work, we re happy to have her in this role. Vanessa s address is advocacy@wcfid.co.za. We know all these ladies are going to be very busy, but do feel free to pop in and introduce yourselves when you are in the area!

3 2018 FIRST TERM TRAINING SELF ADVOCATES GROUP (People with intellectual disability) The self-advocates social was a celebration of charades, musical chairs, and a quiz game. Lots of prizes were up for grabs and the motivation to win was huge. One of the group homes won a board game for their centre, which linked in well with our theme for the day. A special thanks to John Richt from Camphill Hermanus who assisted Desiree with some of the activities. The self-advocates truly enjoyed this event, as it was a depiction of their growth over the last two years. Her area of work is Assistive Technology for people with intellectual disability and we are honoured to have her present some of her research findings for us. More details will follow closer to the date of her talk. Includes a training manual SOCIAL WORKERS JOURNAL CLUB For all social workers in the disability sector AN OVERVIEW OF BEHAVIOUR THAT CHALLENGES, WITH SPECIFIC FOCUS ON INTERVENTION STRATEGIES WITH FAMILIES AND THE APPROACH WITH A LOW FUNCTIONING CLIENT. Collectively, we will look at our constitutions. Please bring your organisation s constitution with you. NB: This is not Studio 111 training. March is Intellectual Disability Awareness Month special training for March 2018 INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY IN SOUTH AFRICA: LOOKING BACK, LOOKING FORWARDS A REFLECTIVE Facilitator: Emeritus Professor Colleen Adnams Vera Grover Professor of Intellectual Disability, Dept. Psychiatry and Mental Health, University of Cape Town Date: Wednesday 7 th March 2018 OPD Building, Alexandra Hospital R30.00 members, R non members Manual R (optional) by Friday 2 nd March 2018 Over the past decade, significant progress has been achieved in improving the well-being of people with intellectual disability in South Africa, through human rights initiatives in health and mental health but not enough. Through the lens of the newly-retired UCT Chair of Intellectual Disability, endowed by Vera Grover, the presentation will discuss progress and challenges past, present and future. AN OVERVIEW OF THE POLICY FOR THE PROVISION OF QUALITY EDUCATION AND SUPPORT SERVICES FOR CHILDREN WITH SEVERE TO PROFOUND INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY (CSPID) AND THE LEARNING PROGRAMME FOR CSPID Facilitator: Heidi Myburgh, Deputy Chief Education Specialist: Inclusive and Specialised Education, Children with Severe to Profound Intellectual Disability Date: Wednesday 14 th March2018 OPD Building, Alexandra Hospital R30.00 members, R non members by Friday 9 th March 2018 Due to the Right to Education court judgment and process, a policy and learning programme have been developed. In 2018, the Dept. Basic Education (DBE) will begin the roll out of the new learning programme nationally. In this workshop, the presenter will provide an overview of both the policy and the programme, highlighting what can be expected from DBE and the CSPID teams.

6 FEEDBACK FROM THE HOME BASED CARE: DISABILITY CARE 2017 NQF 2 ACCREDITED COURSE. This course was developed to offer special care staff the opportunity to upskill and gain an accredited course in Home Based Care: Disability Care. 19 students completed classes over six months, and wrote their final exams on 26 October On 2 November 2017 they all received feedback and were all found competent in all unit standards for this course. The WCFID then held a small graduation tea on 9 November 2017, which was a lovely morning with the management of their organisations and some family members present. Students received wonderful resources to use at their centres THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2017 CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! Students worked very hard, both during lessons and at home EXPRESSION OF INTEREST CARER COURSE 2018 The course provides 32 credits towards a National Certificate: Community Health Worker Level 2 and comprises the following unit standards: o Assist the client and significant others to manage home based health care o Provide support relating to home based care o Perform basic life support and first aid procedures In addition, WCFID includes our training, at the appropriate level, on Understanding Intellectual Disability, Learning by Doing, Right to Protection and Thinking Ahead. Please note, resources for these are funding dependant. Participants will be required to provide proof of highest grade passed; Foreign Nationals are welcome but are required to have a valid work permit; Applicants will be required to provide 2 certified copies of their highest grade passed, identity document and work permit (if relevant) at the time of registration; Cost R per person - (As the actual course cost with Robin Trust is R5, and highly subsidized by WCFID, the WCFID will hold the centre liable for R over and above the R if a participant withdraws/does not complete without a very significant reason. The WCFID would highly recommend centres to get carers who attend the course to sign a contract with their centres agreeing they will work at the centre for a year/2 years post completion of the course); Centres are responsible for transport costs for carers. Lunch WILL NOT be provided; Commencement date probably April 2018 (to be finalised) potentially every Thursday in school term, plus the first week of the June/July school holidays.
