5 Course Purpose NeuroSafe 2018 Symposium This two-day symposium offers a conversation about how to improve the safety and quality in neurosurgery. On local, state and national levels, providers are constantly challenged to provide high-quality, safe neurosurgical care in complex healthcare systems. And when governments, commercial organizations, and neurosurgical professionals focus on the topics of quality and safety, they inevitably find gaps in the available information. With the Triple Aim of improving patient care experience (including quality and satisfaction), improving the health of populations, and reducing the per capita cost of health care in mind, the third annual NeuroSafe symposium NeuroSafe 2018 will be held August 2-3 at the McNamara Alumni Center on the University of Minnesota campus. It is designed to help grow our knowledge about and practical experience with these important topics. The two days will provide access to national experts and organizations sharing strategies, studies and ideas via interactive case-based presentations, case reviews and discussions. Key Topics This one-of-a-kind symposium offers cutting-edge perspectives about neurosurgical quality and safety, including: Improvement efforts across all practice settings Outcomes measures Challenges Building the safest environments for neurosurgery patients throughout the world. Educational Objectives After attending NeuroSafe 2018, you will be better able to: Describe how to address quality and safety challenges using real-life examples Outline current neurosurgical quality and safety expectations Identify potential quality and safety outcomes measures in neurosurgery Create new, national collaborations in quality and safety Interpret regionalized quality and safety measures Leverage your organization to improve quality and safety. Accreditation Statement Accreditation Statement In support of improving patient care, University of Minnesota, Interprofessional Continuing Education is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team. 6 Welcome to NeuroSafe 2018 Symposium Welcome to NeuroSafe 2018 and thank you for taking time out to reflect on quality and safety in neurosurgery. This third annual symposium is designed to be highly interactive, giving you opportunities for multiple conversations about how to improve safety and quality in your neurosurgery practice. We all face challenges in providing high-quality, safe neurosurgical care in complex healthcare systems. Considering the Triple Aim of patient outcomes, cost and patient experience, it s important to invest in increasing our knowledge and practical experience about neurosurgical quality and safety. There is no better way to do that than by interacting with national experts and sharing across organizations about strategies, studies and ideas to accomplish these aims. NeuroSafe 2018 creates a perfect forum for doing that through interactive, case-based presentations. Conference Overview Over the two-day symposium, you will hear several keynote presentations by leading North American neurosurgeons. Their topics are both wide-ranging and timely and we re honored to bring their expertise to you. Multiple breakout sessions will showcase practical quality and safety improvement applications for neurosurgery. Some of the breakouts are repeated, giving you the opportunity to attend sessions you might otherwise miss. Matthew A. Hunt, MD, FRCS, FAANS Course Co-Director Neurosurgeon, Associate Professor and Resident Program Director, Department of Neurosurgery There will be an opportunity for additional social interaction during a group dinner and program at Bar Lurcat in downtown Minneapolis from 6 to 9 p.m., Thursday, August 2. We are also honored and very excited to announce the publication of Quality and Safety in Neurosurgery, which features the practice-changing work of previous and current NeuroSafe keynote and abstract presenters. All symposium attendees will receive a free electronic copy of the book (a $125 value.) NeuroSafe 2018 is presented by the University of Minnesota Department of Neurosurgery in cooperation with the Office of Continuing Professional Development - University of Minnesota Medical School. Daniel J. Guillaume, MD Course Co-Director Neurosurgeon, Associate Professor and Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery, Quality & Safety Program Director, Department of Neurosurgery Disclosure Summary information will be provided in a separate document.
