2 OVERVIEW Trauma is the leading cause of childhood death and disability. However, pediatric trauma care continues to provide significant and unique challenges. This two-day symposium will provide the health care practitioner with up-to-date clinical information for the management of injured children and their families. Current issues will be addressed throughout the continuum of trauma care. COURSE OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this conference, participants should be able to: Describe current treatment and technologic advances that decrease pediatric death and disability. Discuss how trauma impacts the physical and emotional future of the pediatric patient. Identify strategic measures to reduce the incidence of pediatric traumatic injuries. 2
3 CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 12.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Other health care professionals are awarded 1.25 continuing education units (CEU s) which are equal to 12.5 contact hours. An application for contact hours has been submitted to the UPMC Provider Unit of the PA State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia is approved as a provider for continuing EMS education by the PA Department of Health. An application for PA EMS credits has been submitted for both days. This conference is for the advanced pre-hospital provider/phrn. WHO SHOULD ATTEND This multidisciplinary conference is designed for surgeons who care for injured children, emergency medicine physicians, other physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, pre-hospital providers, injury prevention specialists and other health care professionals involved with injured children.
