The new state-of-the-art University College Hospital which opened in 2005, is the focal point of the Trust alongside six cutting-edge specialist hospitals. UCLH was one of the first trusts to gain foundation status. The Trust has an international reputation and a tradition of innovation. Our excellence in research and development was recognised in December 2006 when it was announced that, in partnership with University College London (UCL), we would be one of the country s five comprehensive biomedical research centres. Alongside our relationship with the world leading UCL and Royal Free medical school, we enjoy close links with London South Bank and City universities offering the very best in training and education. CLINICAL BOARD The Specialist Hospitals Clinical Board comprises of Clinical Neurosciences (the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery), the Eastman Dental Hospital, the Royal London Homoeopathic Hospital, the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Obstetric Hospitals and Paediatric and Adolescent Services. These directorates predominantly bring together a range of former separate specialist hospitals within the wider UCLH NHS Trust. As such, there are common themes of close working relationships with the University to promote research, development and teaching, while at the same time delivering a range of services that extends to the local community through to highly specialist regional or supra-regional provision.

2 CARDIOLOGY DIRECTORATE In October 2001, Cardiology and Cardio-thoracic Services at UCLH were relocated to the Heart Hospital on Westmoreland St, a mile west of the Middlesex Hospital. The Hospital was purpose built and equipped as a top quality private hospital in It was acquired for the NHS by UCLH in September 2001 and provides an exceptional environment for patients and staff. Following the acquisition of the Heart Hospital there has been a large expansion in the clinical cardiology service and academic personnel. Professor McKenna s cardiomyopathy group moved to the Heart Hospital in April 2003 from St George s Hospital and a large increase in biventricular pacemaker and defibrillator implants has occurred in parallel with the development of a large clinical arrhythmia and electrophysiology service led by Dr Martin Lowe and Dr Anthony Chow. In addition, the adult congenital (GUCH) service continues to enlarge with increasing referrals for complex interventional procedures. The Hospital has 88 beds, including 16 critical care beds and 13 day-beds. There are 4 theatres and 4 cardiac catheter laboratories. 3 labs are equipped for Electrophysiology procedures with one being a stereotaxis lab. The Hospital has a new, on-site dedicated cardiac MRI scanner (Siemens Avanto) for clinical and research use. There are direct links with UCL for the provision of laboratory based research facilities for consultants, junior doctors and paramedical staff.

We expect post holders to predominantly undertake a number of research projects with some clinical and educational obligations. Clinical Training and Responsibilities: Electrophysiology Mapping and Catheter Ablation: The post holder would primarily be focused on cardiac mapping and arrhythmia research work but there may be opportunities for limited exposure to other areas of electrophysiological training.

4 Formulation and submission of ethics and grant application Data collection, audit and reporting of multi-centre and local trials Submission of abstracts for presentation at national and international meetings, preparation of manuscripts for peer review publications. Clinics: The Fellow is expected to participate in Electrophysiology clinics, seeing new and follow-up patients, primarily to identify, follow-up and enrol patients for clinical trials. Research commitments: Develop a primary designated research project in the use of mapping & imaging in catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. Continue to develop a large database of arrhythmia patients for research and aid in the departments involvement in development of new ablation technology. Present research work at national and international conferences and in peer reviewed journals. Non-clinical training and responsibilities: To share in cardiology administration including planning of rotas To participate in the unit s research activities To participate in teaching of medical students To participate in audit and clinical governance at The Heart Hospital General Adhere to the UCLH Service Commitment "Putting Patients First" and adopt a professional approach to customer care at all times Comply with the Trust s Equal Opportunities Policy and treat staff, patients, colleagues and potential employees with dignity and respect at all times Take personal responsibility for promoting a safe environment and safe patient care by identifying areas of risk and following the Incident, Serious Incidents and Near Misses reporting policy and procedure Take personal responsibility for ensuring that UCLH resources are used efficiently and with minimum wastage, and to comply with the Trust's Standing Financial Instructions (SFIs) Comply with Trust policies for personal and patient safety and for prevention of healthcare-associated infection (HCAI); this includes a requirement for rigorous and consistent compliance with Trust policies for hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment and safe disposal of sharps Be aware of and adhere to all Trust policies and procedures, the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Data Protection Act Maintain confidentiality at all times Working arrangements You are expected to arrive promptly for work at Research Fellows may be asked from time to time to undertake additional duties to cover colleagues for clinical duties but such incidents may be limited.

5 You are expected to maintain satisfactory patient notes, to write discharge letters and summaries. With the introduction of medical audit you may be required to enter relevant data on to computers and to abide by the rules and regulations of the Data Protection Act. You will be expected to organise and undertake presentations at departmental meetings and to supervise SHOs in preparation for their presentations. There may be opportunities to participate in the Trust s cardiology on call rota. Single accommodation on-site is provided. Full residential accommodation can be provided for those who require it. They should contact the Medical Personnel Department as soon as possible after they are appointed. Hours of work SpRs work a full-shift system. You are expected to organise your working day and cooperate with your colleagues to allow 30 minutes natural break for each 4 hour period of work whenever feasible.

6 GENERAL INFORMATION RELATING TO TERMS AND CONDITIONS Pay Pay structure will be based on the normal NHS scale. Holidays A week of leave is allocated within each 8 week cycle. Holiday entitlement is 32 days plus 8 statutory days per annum. Study leave Study leave up to a maximum of 30 days per annum may be granted on a discretionary basis for periods of study. Cover is provided by the floating registrar for anyone on study leave taken Monday to Friday. For weekend study leave swaps may be arranged. Locum cover is not usually provided for study leave. Applications should be signed by the attending physician. Requests for funding should be made to the Postgraduate Dean giving at least six weeks notice. Sick and compassionate leave are covered by locums when necessary. Education SpRs will attend an induction course at the beginning of their post which will include a compulsory two day Trust induction including fire training. A training plan will be drawn up at the beginning of the post under the guidance of a designated consultant. SpRs must arrange meetings at least every three months with their educational supervisor to plan and discuss progress. During the duration of the post successful applicants are expected to maintain a log book of their projects, achievements and interesting cases. SpRs are expected to act as mentor to at least one SHO. There is easy access to computers on the wards. These give access to major medical databases including Medline and the Cochrane Database. You will be able to set up a hospital based for the duration of your post. Excellent library facilities exist in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences and in University College. The Royal Society of Medicine which houses the best medical library in the UK is 20 minutes walk from the hospital.

7 Terms and Conditions of Service The post is covered by the Terms and Conditions of Service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff as aid down by DHSS. Copies are available for reference in the Medical Staffing Office. Facilities The hospital is close to the London West End with its shopping centres, theatres, opera and concert halls. The nearest tube stations to University College Hospital are Bond Street (Central and Jubilee lines), Oxford Circus (Bakerloo, Victoria and Central lines) and Regent s Park (Bakerloo line). The hospital is also within walking distance of Euston and Kings Cross, and St Pancras main line stations.
