1 Job Description Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon Central Manchester University Hospitals Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a major teaching Trust with six hospitals. The six hospitals are Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI), Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (MREH) and St. Mary s Hospital (SMH) and the Royal Manchester Children s Hospital (RMCH) all situated on the main Central Manchester site and the University Dental Hospital of Manchester. In April 2012 CMFT also acquired Trafford Hospitals. The Trust has undergone a major re-building programme through the completion of one of the largest PFI initiatives in the NHS. The building programme completed in 2009, provided new facilities for medicine, obstetrics/gynaecology, ophthalmology and brought Children s services to the Central Manchester site. The new Royal Manchester Children s Hospital is the largest children s hospital in the UK with 371 beds. The hospital provides children s emergency, secondary and regional tertiary services, having brought together the services previously provided at Booth Hall Children s Hospital, Royal Manchester Children s Hospital (Pendlebury) and St Mary s Hospital for Women and Children. The National Institute for Health Research has recently allocated, through open competition, Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) status to the Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Manchester partnership. Research and Innovation The vision of CMFT is to become the leading integrated health, teaching, research and innovation campus in the NHS. Within this context our aim over the next 5 years is to ensure that CMFT is one of the top 5 NHS Trusts for research and innovation in the U.K. Our capacity for translation of research and innovation into improved patient care will be internationally recognised, both in its own right and in partnership with Manchester Academic Health Science Centre ( We have a number of important assets to help us achieve this ambitious goal: We have just completed a new hospital development, co-located with the University of Manchester to create the largest biomedical research campus in Europe 3
4 The Manchester NIHR Biomedical Research Centre ( a partnership with the University of Manchester, is one of 12 such elite centres in the UK. The Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility (WTCRF), purpose built for experimental medicine research and incorporating an MRI research scanner suite, is one of only 4 in the UK with both adult and paediatric facilities. The Centre for Applied Diagnostics and Experimental Therapeutics, a multimillion pound new development uniquely designed and built within the hospital to enable application of proteomics, metabolomics and genomics to experimental medicine. A recently opened and staffed Biobanking facility, now collecting a range of well phenotyped human tissues for research within CMFT and across MAHSC. The largest single site clinical sciences centre in the UK. Our clinical research and innovation benefits from established partnerships with: o TrusTECH, the NHS Innovation Hub in the Northwest o MIMIT (Manchester Integrating Medicine and Innovative Technology), providing solutions to unmet clinical need. o Manchester Medical Technologies Development Centre, designed to accelerate the development of new devices and diagnostics o Greater Manchester Comprehensive Local Research Network o Medicines for Children Research Network o ICON Development Solutions o Wyeth Pharmaceuticals o Science & Technology Facilities Council at Daresbury These assets, coupled with a network of Clinical Division Research Leads and Research Managers enabling research throughout the organisation, and a system of internal pump priming grants, provide a first class environment for translational research in a hospital setting. Research in the Children s Division is underpinned by comprehensive tertiary medical and surgical services that provide care to ~one million children and young people across the North-West. There are very close links with secondary paediatric services with an extensive network of district clinics, providing direct access to a large ethnically diverse population base with a wide range of pathology. The Royal Manchester Children s Hospital is host to the Greater Manchester, Lancashire and South Cumbria Medicines for Children Local Research Network (MCRN) and the Paediatrics Non- Medicines Research Network (PNMR) and therefore a large proportion of our research has their support. The Division has also recently established its own Children s Clinical Research Facility on site, which enables us to run complex in-patient clinical trials. This facility is run through the quality assured procedures of the Wellcome Trust CRF and the MCRN. The Children s Division supports a wide range of research across paediatric sub-specialties, and contributes to the Genetics and Human Development theme which is the main focus of the Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). We excel at an international level in five areas: Cancer, Endocrinology, Child & Adolescent Mental Health, Inherited Metabolic Disease (IMD) and Nephrology, with research supported by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), the Medical Research Council, major research charities such as Cancer Research UK and The Wellcome Trust, and Pharmaceutical companies. Local support is provided through the BRC and its Fellowship scheme, and pump priming grant schemes run by the Research & Innovation Division. 4
5 The Children s Division has a focus on the above areas of research strength and encourages growth in the other sub-specialties. The appointee will be expected to support this research and innovation agenda through enabling studies in collaboration with other colleagues. Postgraduate Facilities There are well-equipped postgraduate departments, including a modern library with CD-ROM search facilities (Silver Platter Medline). They are responsible for career advice and guidance to Junior Doctors, and for approving the study leave of junior staff. The Dean of Postgraduate Medical Studies for the North West Region, based at the Medical School is Professor Jackie Hayden. All staff including Consultants are expected to undergo continuing medical education, and to use their study-leave allocation for this purpose. Teaching The appointee will, along with Consultant colleagues, play a role in StR training and education within the department. The Regional Training Scheme has a comprehensive programme of lectures and tutorials and participation would be encouraged. You would also be expected to participate in the teaching of undergraduate medical education. Clinical Audit The appointee will be expected to participate in Medical Audit. Regular clinical, management and clinical audit meetings are also held. An Audit facilitator is based within the Children s Division. Appraisal and Job Plan Review Annual Appraisal is now obligatory for all consultants and will include an annual Job Plan review. Continuing Medical Education The Trust is committed to supporting CME for all specialists with both time and financial support. Information Technology You are encouraged to pro-actively seek to work with the Trusts information technology resources, to exploit the full benefits of information technology in delivering improved patient care. Maintaining Medical Excellence The Trust is committed to providing safe and effective care for patients. To ensure this there is an agreed procedure for medical staff that enables them to report quickly and confidentially, concerns about the conduct, performance or health of medical colleagues (Chief Medical Officer, December 1996). All medical staff practising in the Trust should ensure that they are familiar with the procedure and apply it. Risk Management The Trust has a Risk Management Strategy.
