1 THE CENTRAL LINE Missouri Emergency Nurses Association Spring 2008 Volume 22 Brenda Butler, RN,BSN, CEN Missouri State Council President w Message from Missouri State ENA Council President: Brenda Butler April brings warm weather and with it many challenges for emergency nurses throughout Missouri. Emergency Departments across the state continue to look at ways to be more efficient and improve patient flow. Warm weather adds an increased number of trauma patients to already crowded departments. The increasing number of trauma patients in turn increase patient wait times and length of stay for less critical patients, which puts the ED nurse at the bedside explaining the ever growing wait. We have seen a nation wide trend as the baby boomer generation ages, it becomes more common for the inpatient beds to be full, meaning that emergency department patients who are ready for admission into the hospital must remain in the ED, thus further stressing the Emergency Department. Psychiatric and substance abuse patients are being seen in our emergency departments in growing numbers, further stressing the ED with clinical and placement challenges. Add to these issues a shortage of emergency trained physicians, a shortage of nurses, too many uninsured patients with no where else to go and long waits for doctors appointments that force non-emergency patients to clog the EDs when they are sick. Whatever the challenges that you face as an emergency nurse, I want to invite and encourage you to attend your Local Chapter and State Council meetings. Missouri ENA offers many opportunities for you to share your experience of what has decreased wait times and improved patient flow in your emergency department. 3 COURSE OPERATIONS REPORT by Helen Sandkuhl, Course Operations Chairperson TNCC UPDATE DEADLINE Please remember that current TNCC Instructors must be updated by April 30, 2008 to remain as an active TNCC instructor. Instructors who have not been updated to the 6th edition will no longer be active instructors as of May 1st, Missouri held 18 instructor update sessions with a 85% participation rate. The last update course was March 9th. If you still need to update, please contact National GETENA for update courses in nearby states. INSTRUCTOR CARDS All current ENPC and TNCC Instructors will be sent new instructor cards by the end of March. Please note if you are currently an active instructor in the 5th edition, you will receive a new instructor card, but if you are not updated to the 6th edition by April 30th, you will no longer remain an active instructor. The total CECH for this course is 6.5, and the correction has been made on the ENA website. COURSE NUMBERS AND CONFIRMATIONS Course numbers are now shorter. The last two digits used to represent the anticipated participants have now been eliminated. Also the new database will automatically send course confirmations via . This will replace the postcards sent to you in the past. STATE COURSES All state ENPC/TNCC and CATN Courses scheduled in Missouri can be found on the National or State ENA website. 4 Membership by Ginny Myerscough, Chairperson The membership committee has again been very busy. They are challenging each chapter to recruit new members with a special recognition to those that do. Each new member receives a welcome letter informing them of the their chapter, the current President with meeting dates and information. In 2007, we had 129 new members, with the membership growing to 630, the most that we have ever had. Thanks to everyone who contributed. The 2007 Scholarship Award winners among new members were: Kim Kolks-St. Louis, Brian Talker-Columbia, Lisa Kight-Cape Girardeau These three winners were chosen at random from the new 2007 members to receive a free registration to the 2008 Combined Clinical Conference. New members, thus far, for 2008 are: KC Chapter: Jim Brooks, Sean Daugherty SEMO Chapter: Andrew Kelly, Alicia Rhodes St. Louis Chapter: Jodi Wright This year we will draw 6 names (one from each chapter) for a free registration for the 2009 conference at Tantara, so encourage all your colleagues to join for a chance to win and reap the benefits. ON YOUR MARK, GET SET, VOTE National elections are coming up in May and June. You can read about the candidates in the ENA connection and on the ENA Web site. There has been poor voter turnout in past elections. We would like to get Missouri s vote up. Last year only 3 or 4 % of us voted. Your Vote can and does make a difference. Please take the time to vote. Compliance Committee Joan Eberhardt, RN, BSN, MA, CCRN, FAEN, Chairperson A Compliance Committee has been established by the Missouri State Council ENA as part of the 2008 Strategic Plan. It will function as a standing committee to be included in the Bylaws and Standard Operating Guidelines (SOG s) of the State Council. The first committee meeting will be held on April 19, at 10:30 am at the Lake Regional Hospital in Osage Beach. Duties of the committee include: Annual review and revision (as needed) of the MoENA Bylaws and SOG s. Working with the Membership Committee on the nomination and election of officers Working with the Membership Committee to identify delegates to the National ENA General Assembly Working with the Treasurer to assure National ENA tax-exempt requirements are met Working with all MoENA Chapters to maintain an archive of Chapter minutes Working with the President and Membership Committee to review new Chapter applications. Other assigned duties This will be a working committee and we are would like to invite interested MoENA members to join. 5 Combined Clinical Conference Tantara August 13, 14, and 15, 2008 The final planning stages for our 22nd annual Combined Clinical Conference in partnership with MEMSA and ACEP are in progress. Brochures should be distributed in the very near future and can be found on our website... The nomination form for our annual award banquet, which will take place during the conference, can be found on page 9 of this newsletter. Take a moment to nominate a colleague. You know they are worth it and the fulfillment that you will receive as the nominator is invaluable! Injury Prevention Report Lori Davis, Injury Prevention Committee MISSOURI HELMET LAW THREATENED REPEAL LEGISLATION TO BE DEBATED SOON IN THE HOUSE IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED: House Bill 1393, if enacted, will effectively repeal Missouri s all-rider motorcycle helmet law by making it a minors only law. This bill is sponsored by Rep. Dusenberg (R-54). Repeal of the law will increase deaths and injuries as well as the financial burden on Missouri hospitals and taxpayers. The House could take up HB 1393 as early as this week. The companion legislation in the Senate, SB 1067, passed the Senate Transportation Committee, but is not yet on the Senate calendar for debate. Please contact the members of the House of Representatives today and tell them of your strong opposition to HB Urge them to vote NO and to uphold the current all-rider motorcycle helmet law. 6 Chapter Reports Crescent Chapter by Chris Hoag-Apel, President The chapter met on March 17, 2008, with a detailed President s report with information regarding the Missouri State Council meeting provided. The committee discussed the possibility of taking TNCC and ENPC courses to outlying areas. Financial considerations need to be analyzed. The Children s Center is sponsoring a workshop on Child Abuse. Mike Johnson, a wellknown and knowledgeable speaker will be talking about interviewing perpetrators and working as a multi-disciplinary team. The workshop will be held May 2, , at MSSU Justice Center at no charge. Kansas City Chapter by Teresa Coyne, President Teresa Coyne, President and Mike Curry, President-Elect attended the National Leadership Conference in Hawaii. See pictures below. Our Annual Spring Training Conference was held March 7th at Liberty Hospital. Twenty-two participants braved a snowstorm to hear Cathy Howmeyer from the Ozark Chapter speak on Violence in the Workplace, among our speakers. Deanna Adkinson won a free ENA membership and Jane Haddon won a free pass to conference in Semo Chapter by Sarah Foote, President The SEMO chapter conducted a TNCC class in February with great attendance. Another class in scheduled for April 19 & 20, 2008 with two mor planned for later in the year. We are participating in a school Parents as Teachers resource fair on April 19th and fitting kids for bike helmets. We are also doing bike safety for school age kids and helmet fitting on May 29th. Meetings for 2008 are: April 14th, , Southeast Missouri Hospital June 9, August 11, October 13, and December 8, times and placed to be announced. Our June 9th meeting is being sponsored by Southeast Missouri Hospital and we are having a dinner and speaker on pediatric related summertime injuries. The Missouri-1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) is seeking emergency nurses, trauma nurses and nurse practitioners in both the pediatric and adult patient care environments who are interested in actively participating in National, and sometimes International, disaster medical assistance. Missouri-1 DMAT has teams at the federal, as well as the state or corporate level. You can choose to participate at one or both levels, or even decide to commit your time as a dedicated member to the home team during deployment. Becoming a DMAT Team member does require commitment from you......because it means you are truly interested in participating and responding to help others during times of tremendous need. Medical care is provided in areas that have experienced horrible calamities such as tornadoes, hurricanes and floods, as well as other devastating events. In writing this, I realize not everyone is interested in or even cut out to do this sort of venture. But if you are a nurse who is looking for an opportunity to literally give something back this is truly the opportunity that you have been seeking. 8 NATIONAL NEWS By Tiffiny Stever Work on the Strategic Plan continues. A three year plan is a much larger task than one can imagine. We did some work while in Hawaii, continue to work on things via and will have another face to face meeting (3-days worth) in July in Chicago. As we move forward we will continue to update members; as the plan is what is going to drive your organization. Leadership in Hawaii was a huge success. Besides being a beautiful place to visit I heard many positive comments from the attendees. The Leader s Conference was well attended and the new format was well received. The sessions were very informative. I was pleased to see the number of members who attended the Candidates Forum. Please take the time to review the candidates information on-line when it becomes available and please vote. This is your organization! SBIRT will be released in April and we are looking for Champions in every state. The TNCC 6 th Revision Update is complete and I know that several states have held the new course. In March I represented the ENA at the Student Nurses Association National Conference. What a wonderful group of students (3500 strong). I believe that I even recruited a few to become ED nurses! Additionally, I was truly rewarded in spending time with them. So for now I m going to close, but again do not hesitate to call or write me with questions or concerns.
