1 WISCPHR w i s c p h r. w i s c. e d u WISCPHR Newsletter WI Society for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Health and Rehabilitation January 31, Volume 27, Number 1 In this issue. Presidents Corner Hi Everyone, 1. Presidents Corner 3. Support Group 4. AACVPR CCRP 5. Call for Clinical Abstracts 2016 Board of Directors upcoming meetings: May 17 September27 November 15 Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings! Where is our snow!! Some are happy it hasn t come and others want to get out on those snowmobiles! Oh the unpredictability of Wisconsin weather!! Speaking of unpredictability what is going to happen in the elections? Such a different year! I do think it could be so easily argued that there has been no more important time for us to exercise our right to vote. More pointedly stated our responsibility to extend our professional practice in representation of our patients. Show your support of the issues at hand. When you receive a call to action, please respond by fulfilling the request. If you have any questions on what to do or how to do it, please never be afraid to myself or other members of the WISCPHR board. The 2 biggest legislative issues for 2016 are: 1. Granting to physician assistants, nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists for supervision in cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs on a day-to-day basis by the amendment of an error in the language included in Public Law (enacted in 2008). As a result, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation require a level of physician supervision that is not commensurate with patient risk; this creates access issues in rural (critical care facilities) and other areas with physician shortages, as well as unnecessary costs for these low-revenue programs. 2. The licensing of Exercise Physiologists. Your 2016 delegates from Wisconsin to Day on the Hill, in representation of these current issues, are: Diana Rohloff WISCPHR President from Milwaukee, Bonnie Anderson WISCPHR BOD member and liaison to AACVPR from Viroqua and Lance Maerz President Elect from Barneveld. (continued) Newsletter 1
2 WISCPHR Newsletter The WISCPHR Newsletter is dedicated to the dissemination of information to assist WISCPHR members in patient care and professional growth. It is published five times a year for the education and benefit of its members. We encourage members to submit articles to the Newsletter by contacting the editor. Board of Directors: President: Diana Rohloff, Greenfield President elect: Lance Maerz, Dodgeville Immediate Past President: Susan Kindschi, Edgerton Secretary: Becky Blake, Sheboygan Treasurer: Jill Kahler, Oshkosh Regional Representatives Northwest: Julie Lee, Tomah Dawn Hoff, Viroqua Shari Durch, River Falls Northcentral: Kelly Shields, Stevens Point Northeast: Krista Masiak, Neenah Kayla Hine, Sheboygan Karel Ochs, Appleton Southeast: Nicole Fischer, West Allis Stephanie Jackson, Waukesha Beth Salko, Grafton Southwest: Lance Maerz, Dodgeville Jennifer Stalsberg, Madison Kacie Vergeront, Monroe Members at Large: Bonnie Anderson, Viroqua Diana Rohloff, Greenfield Editor: Chad Sauvageau, Stevens Point Website & Electronic Mailing Coordinator: Chad Johnson, Rice Lake (continued from pg 1) The WISCPHR annual conference on April 23 in Madison will include representation of the 2016 regulations for program practice and billing from our Jurisdiction Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC), Dr. Cunningham. She will be accompanied by cardiac and pulmonary physician representatives from AACVPR and AACVPR s consultant for governance risk and compliance Karen Lui, GRQ Consulting. What is predictable? We are. We are predictable in that we will do everything we can to help our cardiac and pulmonary patients both in the gym and in the community by keeping our programs viable through supporting legislation and educating ourselves in all aspects of programming. It is predictable that you will be there for your colleagues in WISCPHR when called to action and in attendance at our yearly state conference. Why wouldn t you be, you are WISCPHR, we are WISCPHR! Thank you for all you do for your patients and for WISCPHR! Diana Rohloff, RN President WISCPHR Diana.rohloff@aurora.org Newsletter 2
3 ASLMC Cardiac Rehab has recently started a support group for their patients. Once every month, patients of Phase II and Phase III Cardiac Rehab are invited to join and listen to a discussion. Topics may range from podiatry, medications, cardiac surgery, and many more! There are also topics such as jeopardy, yoga, and Tai Chi that encourage patients to interact and encourage movement! The support group is led by a variety of different people including physicians, surgeons, and group exercise instructors. We encourage patients to share ideas for upcoming support group and education topics. The support group has been a success as our attendance has ranged from patients each month. We enjoy being a part of the patients continuing wellness! Newsletter 3
