2 Susan M. Bell, Chairmen A LETTER FROM OUR LEADERSHIP We are pleased to present our 2008 Annual Report celebrating the achievements of the past year and outlining our commitment to helping donors in the St. Louis region. In 2008, we served a broad and diverse audience of grantmakers, nonprofits and community leaders through our high-quality information, research and programming, which is detailed in this overview. Some highlights include: Over 16 Skill Building Programs with attendance totaling Grantmaker Networking Programs with attendance totaling 235 Almost 20 Affinity and Community Programs with attendance totaling 600 Amidst presenting over 50 programs, producing 48 What Gives? our weekly member newsletter and completing more than 250 hours of member requested research we prepared for and experienced many changes that will come to fruition in GATEWAY CENTER FOR GIVING is the St. Louis region s leading resource for helping individuals, foundations and corporations do more with their gifts of time, wisdom and wealth. The Center embraces three ideals: collaboration, inclusiveness and effectiveness. We translate these ideals into action by helping donors connect, learn and act to have greater impact on the issues they care about and the nonprofits they fund. OUR SERVICES Networking opportunities with other grantmakers and community leaders to share information and resources, build understanding, and foster collaboration. Quality Information, Research and Skill Building programs to ensure effective and accountable use of charitable dollars. Enhancing Regional Leadership through information on community needs and philanthropic best practices that supports collaborative action to help address our most pressing issues. OUR MISSION is to provide services to strengthen and expand philanthropy to improve the St. Louis region. OUR VISION is a thriving St. Louis region in which a strong philanthropic community and effective nonprofits collaboratively advance the quality of life of all citizens. We have a new Executive Committee of the Board, three retiring and three new board members and a new organizational President. Like many nonprofits, we too are responding to changing and uncertain economic times while remaining committed to providing high quality services designed to help the grantmaking community rise to the challenges ahead. As is true with any successful organization, our achievements are rooted in the effective service of many. I want to thank all of the community leaders who have contributed their time, service and resources to advancing the mission of the Center. We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead! 3 ...on time The William T. Kemper Foundation, Commerce Bank Trustee, awarded unsolicited grants to nearly 90 organizations that provide emergency assistance to individuals in the St. Louis and Kansas City areas. HELPING DONORS DO MORE WITH THEIR GIVING The Center provides quality programs, research and information to help donors gain the knowledge and inspiration to improve their organizations and the community. CONNECT: Through the Center s roundtables, workshops, seminars and social networking events, donors make invaluable connections with each other. These connections help inform and strengthen donor collaborations and decisions about grantmaking. LEARN: Effective grantmaking is rooted in continuing education. Our website, helps donors stay connected to the most current information and emerging trends in effective grantmaking and activities in the region. ACT: The work being done through our affinity groups in education, the environment, and the economy provide ways for donors to individually and collectively act to address some of our region s most pressing issues.

4 ...far reaching In 2008, Boeing employees volunteered 25,000 hours of their time to community causes and initiatives. Many of those employees helped create the Trail of Discovery Project a series of beautiful murals depicting the river through history along a huge stretch of flood wall along the Mississippi River. SUPPORTING NONPROFITS THROUGH DONOR AWARENESS The Center provides an important link between the donor and nonprofit communities to build stronger relationships in support of their common interests. CONNECT: Through our database of nonprofits and donors in the region and the Dollars & Sense update on major funding campaigns, the Center provides information that helps nonprofits and donors to connect on issues of shared interest. LEARN: Held several times each year, Meet the Donor programs provide learning opportunities to get up-close and personal with grantmakers who share information about their priorities, helping to ensure the most effective use of charitable contributions. ACT: The Center is committed to bringing the voice of the nonprofit sector to donors so that a sense of shared experience can help fosters real and sustainable change for our communities toughest challenges.

5 ...on going The St. Louis Jefferson Solid Waste Management District funded the Missouri Botanical Garden s Plastic Pot Recycling Program. This initiative has kept millions of pots out of landfills and is now a nationally recognized model for on-going sustainability. GROWING GIVING TO MEET THE NEEDS OF OUR COMMUNITY The generosity of our region is well documented, continuing this tradition requires growing the base of charitable giving. The Center is committed to reaching new audiences with the tools they need to make giving a part of their personal traditions. CONNECT: Will to Give was created to provide support to nonprofits and professional advisors in connecting with donors through an effective message about the need for charitable bequest giving. LEARN: Through partnerships with other community groups, the Center is able to speak on behalf of the philanthropic sector about the importance of charitable giving at local and national convenings. ACT: Through collaborative programs and partnerships with many community organizations, the Center engages with a variety of stakeholders in the region to realize the potential of collective and thoughtful action in changing the world in which we live and work.
