Update on WBFW 2013 plans for Somaliland Mohamed Sheikh UNICEF presented an update on the World Breastfeeding Week 2013 plans for Somaliland, a summary of the presentation is given below: 1
2 Theme for year 2013: Breastfeeding support: Close to the mother. Objectives of WBFW 2013 (Global): To draw attention to the importance of Peer Support in helping mothers to establish and sustain breastfeeding. To inform people of the highly effective benefits of peer counselling, and unite efforts to expand peer counselling programmes. To encourage breastfeeding supporters, regardless of their educational background, to step forward and be trained to support mothers and babies. To identify local community support contacts for breastfeeding mothers that women can go to for help and support after giving birth. To call on governments and maternity facilities globally to actively implement the ten steps, in particular step 10, to improve duration and rates of exclusive breastfeeding. Five circles of support for mothers and children: Family and social network Workplace and employment Response to crisis or emergency Government/Legislation Health care Systems Proposed activities for WBFW 1-7 August 2013 in Somaliland: MoH to immediately appoint Somaliland WBFW taskforce led by MoH and develop ToR. The key stakeholders on SL IYCF programme and C4D to be members of the taskforce. Drafting realistic action points based on the theme of the year to be developed. All partners conducting WBFW commemoration activities in Somaliland should share plan with the taskforce prior two weeks of the implementation. Key standard breastfeeding promotion messages for the week to be developed and used at all level by all partners. Challenges: World Breastfeeding Week 1-7 th August 2013 coincides with Ramadan which causes limitations on preparations and the implementation of the commemoration activities. Limited resources for conducting WBFW 2013 commemoration activities in all regions, districts and health facilities in Somaliland. Commemoration of yearly WBFW in Somaliland depends on the financial assistance from UNICEF alone. Effective WBFW commemorations needs good timely preparations and strong coordination for the implementation advocacy, social mobilization and BCC activities involved. Action Point: Partners that have funding for WBFW should let MoH/UNICEF Know. Action Point: WBFW taskforce to be nominated and to meet on Sunday 7 th July Action Point: To follow up with partners what IEC materials they use for us to standardize. 2
