3 Location: Kabul, Agha Khan conference room WBCi training Workshop Agenda 1. General introduction of WBCi 2. Tools introduction and Video play of WBCi 3. Practical session on each indicator or WBCi 4. Conclusion of the practical day on WBCi Summary: After Launching WBCi, the training on use and practice of WBCi conducted for MoPH staff and health and nutrition implementing partners. The training on WBCi conducted in Agha Khan conference hall on 5 January 2014 in Kabul, Afghanistan by support of IBFAN and MoPH. The training facilitated by Dr.M.Hamayoun Ludin, IYCF national consultant and public Nutrition Department. The participants were Government officials, technical staff, UN agencies(unicef,who,wfp,fao), health and nutrition implementing NGOs and health and management staff. New practice and new demand, for first time all participants realized that IYCF is not free program but need enough budget to be cost. Background: Dr Ludin started with brief IYCF situation, breastfeeding rate and IYCF interventions; he presented slides on IYCF global strategy and all its components, emphasis on importance of IYCF activities and brain storming on current IYCF activities. Dr.Ludin start presentation on different stages of assessing WBTi in Afghanistan, the active participation of IYCF taskforce members caused finalizing the assessment on time with good quality. The team found gaps and recommended appropriate activities. Process of the WBTI assessment: Date of the reporting 02/06/2014 3

4 All members of Infant and Young Child feeding task force meeting invited by Dr Ludin (coordinator of WBTi Afghanistan) and briefed them on new assessment, then the tools shared with all IYCF members and they worked on all formats of WBTi and entered data from new MICS(multiple indicator Cluster Survey) 2011, each member worked on specific WBTi indicator and shared with IYCF taskforce members, then the gaps and recommendations reviewed by all members and Director of Public Nutrition Department of MoPH, for more improvement the WBTi report shared with IBFAN/BPNI colleagues, Dr Arun Gupta commented some points and shared with WBTi coordinator, again shared the BPNI comments with IYCF taskforce meeting members and finalized the report. These processes took four months in 5 workshops and 4 individual meetings. 6 call conference meetings and one media orientation workshop. Result of the WBTi report 2012: Trend of all WBTi assessment has been discussed and graph showed for situation: Generally trend showed improvement in the IYCF indicators from 2005 to But the recent result requires more focus on indicator which still in bottom of the score, like indicator 2, 4,5,6,8 and 9. 5 . WBCi practical exercise: Dr Ludin started using WBCi tool and given appropriate information, adding country profile and then working on individual IYCF component. After playing WBCi video, all participants started work on tools, used the excel sheet of WBCi, then each member work specifically on one IYCF indicator. 9 WBCi Launching meeting report Afghanistan 17/1/ /2014 Costing of IYCF Policy and programs: Costing plan presented and discussed in the training, the trend of the cost increment is sign of development but is not enough. Action points: Each organization will train their financial and management staff on WBCi tools and prepare budget based on current WBCi documents. It is recommended to support IYCF programs based on it and avoid duplication. Some NGOs committed to support some parts of it. Like UNICEF, WHO, Save the children, World Vission and Islamic Relief. UNICEF announce and committed support to Breastfeeding communication campaign, breastfeeding counseling training to all health facility midwives, pediatric and obstitrict/gyn doctors,unicef also mentioned their support to community based IYCF, and added strongly supporting to BMS Code monitoring and capacity building of the relevant sectors. 10 WHO is also taking part in capacity building of health facility staff on IYCF counseling and growth monitoring. Breastfeeding research part was the main part which no organization accepted to be funded and requested to follow this part in future to find the solution.
