4 Location Details Saturday-Sunday, April Arrive in Beijing, China Hotel - The Peninsula Beijing Arrive in China, the ancient Land of the Dragon. Upon arrival you will be welcomed at the airport and escorted to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for you to relax and recover from the long flight. Beijing, the capital city of the Republic of China, is known for its artificial lakes as well as its parks and temples. It contains many spectacular examples of the architecture of the Ming and Ch ing dynasties. Beijing consists of two districts, the Outer or Chinese City and the Inner or Tatar City. To aid in traffic flow, the ramparts and gates that once surrounded the cities were replaced by wide avenues. Monday, April 21 Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, and Summer Palace Today you will visit the Tiananmen Square, which is located on the southern edge of the Tatar City and is the largest public square in the world. Pass through the Gate of Heavenly Peace into the Forbidden City to see how Chinese emperors lived. This is an architectural masterpiece, with a breathtaking symmetry of palatial pavilions, courtyards, gates, treasure halls, and gardens. The Forbidden City was not open to the public until the 1920s. The 250- acre palace contains more than 9,000 rooms and is now a vast museum. Later in the day you will explore the Summer Palace, which is located just outside of Beijing. The Summer Palace is the largest imperial garden in the world and is filled with reproductions of garden architecture and landscaping from various palaces throughout China. Tuesday, April 22 Great Wall Excursion The highlight of your stay in the fascinating medieval city of Beijing will be today s visit to the Great Wall. En route we will stop at the Bird s Nest and Water Cube for a picture. Built 2,300 years ago and extending a length of 3,750 miles, the Great Wall can be seen from space. It was built section by section between the fifth century BC and the sixteenth century AD. It was designed to keep invaders from the north from penetrating the border into China. Today you will also have the opportunity to learn about Chinese Feng Shui while visiting the Ming Tombs, which are the ancient burial place of many Chinese emperors. The thirteen tombs are spread around a valley that looks like a natural courtyard. While there, you will walk along the Sacred Way, which was regarded as the formal entrance to the tombs. Wednesday, April 23 Temple of Heaven and Hutongs Tour This morning you will visit the beautiful Temple of Heaven, possibly the country s most popular symbol. It was believed to be the closest place to heaven and was where the emperors would communicate with the gods. You may join in for the morning Tai Chi exercises. Later, enjoy Beijing s hutongs tour by rickshaws including a visit to a local home. The hutongs, or ancient city alleys, were built as part of a city building plan that followed the etiquette systems of the Zhou dynasty, which had specific protocols regarding how residential areas should be set. Thursday, April 24 Fly to Xi an, China Hotel - Hilton Xi an Hotel This morning you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Xi an, once the largest city in the world. Xi an was the national capital for eleven Chinese Dynasties and a major link between Asia and Europe. Upon arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel. This afternoon visit the Big Wide Goose Pagoda Temple, regarded as a landmark in Xi an, as well as the Shaanxi Provincial Museum. Friday, April 25 Terra Cotta Warriors Today you will visit one of the most significant archeological excavations of the twentieth century: the Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses. In 1974, peasants who were digging wells uncovered pottery belonging to the astonishing third-century BC tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. Three burial galleries have since been excavated and are now a part of a magnificent museum, where thousands of terra cotta warriors stand guard over the imperial tomb. The museum covers an area of a little over ten miles and is divided into three sections: No. 1 Pit, No. 2 Pit and No. 3 Pit, which were named in the order of their discovery. The life-sized armored warriors, who stand at attention or kneel in archery positions, were created to accompany the emperor into the afterlife. In the evening you are treated to a traditional Tang Dynasty Show, focusing on the ancient culture of the period. Saturday, April 26 Fly to Chongqing, China This morning you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Chongqing, the biggest metropolis in western China. Visit the Hanling tombs on the way to the hotel. Visit the Panda hall. Fol-

5 lowing your tour, embark on the Century Legend ship to explore and discover the mysteries of the Yangtze River. Board around 7:00 pm and set sail around 9:30 pm. Website: Sunday, April 27 Fengdu/Shiboazhai Today s excursion is to Shiboazhai. This red wooden 12-story pagoda rises stunningly against a 100 foot high rock outcropping along the banks of the Yangtze River. Continue sailing and see all the activity on and along the mighty river. All the bridges on the Yangtze were built after A sumptuous captain s welcome dinner is arranged for this evening s repast. The crew presents an entertaining and colorful cabaret tonight. Monday, April 28 Qutang Gorge/Wu Gorge/Shennong Stream Today you will take a trip through the Three Gorges area. As you sail through the gorges you will see spectacular sights like ancient plank roads, ancient cave coffins, aqueous caves, a rainbow fountain, and rare animals like macaques and mandarin ducks. Your river journey begins in the Qutang Gorge. From there, you will have a chance to take an excursion by boat up Shennong Stream, enjoying the breathtaking scenery of Parrot and Dragon Boat Gorges. You will return to your cruise ship and continue through the wondrous Wu Gorge, a meandering landscape of dazzling peaks and rocks that form a whimsical gallery of natural beauty. You will stop at the dam site and then continue on through Qutang Gorge, which the river has carved out between sheer precipices of overhanging mountains. Here you will see the original site of the famous Fenbi Wall, the ruins of ancient cliff roads, and the Mengliang Steps. Wednesday, April 30 Shanghai Sightseeing Today you will enjoy a full day tour of Shanghai. You will get the opportunity to visit Yu Yuan Garden, a classical garden in downtown Shanghai, boasting a 400-year history. Each pavilion, hall, stone, and stream in the garden expresses the quintessence of South China landscape design from Ming and Qing Dynasty. Yu garden is reputed to be the most beautiful garden south of the Yangtze River. Discover the Jade Buddha Temple, built in the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty in The name of the temple is derived from the two jade Buddhas in the temple, one in sitting statue and another reclining, which were taken to, Burma by sea. This evening you will enjoy a Chinese Acrobats Performance. Thursday, May 1 Zhujiajiao Sightseeing Enjoy a morning drive to the quaint watertown of Zhujiajiao, known for its canals and ancient architecture.
