2 Conference Overview To provide optimal patient care, the anesthesia provider must maintain up-to-date knowledge about health care delivery. This program is designed to review and update the knowledge and skills of anesthesia providers as they relate to current professional practice. The three-day format will allow optimal time for education while providing time to enjoy the Nemacolin experience. Intended Audience This program is designed for anesthesiologists, residents, certified registered nurse anesthetists, and student registered nurse anesthetists, as well as nurses and allied health care providers. Friday Objectives: n List and describe the different modes of ventilation over the years n Describe determining factors for choosing ventilation modes n List and discuss the parameters for mechanical ventilation settings and the use of protective lung ventilation n Describe new evidence on the safety of nitrous oxide n List considerations for nitrous oxide and postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) n Describe the role of nitrous oxide in clinical practice n List factors that slow operating room (OR) efficiency n Describe the role of the anesthesia provider in improving the team work process needed to improve OR efficiency n Describe the role of the anesthesia provider in improving OR efficiency n List ways general anesthesia (GA) might impact neurodevelopment of a child n Describe how anesthetic gases affect specific cognitive processes of associative learning and memory recognition n Describe ways to improve pediatric neurodevelopment outcomes and the future of anesthesia n Describe the trends in perioperative pain management over the years n Identify the most commonly used drugs and the pros and cons of their use n Compare different treatment modalities for pain control n Describe the influence of lack of sleep and fatigue on certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) performance and safety n Differentiate between sleepiness, fatigue, and microsleep on CRNA well-being n Describe countermeasures that CRNAs utilize to manage fatigue on the job
3 Saturday Objectives: n Describe the different types of cardiac implanted electrical devices n Describe the perioperative evaluation of patients with cardiac implanted electrical devices n Describe the perioperative management of patients with cardiac implanted electrical devices n Define physiology and anatomy specific to the obstetric trauma patient and fetus n Describe anesthesia considerations specific to obstetric trauma patients n List benefits of multidisciplinary approach to OB trauma management and potential policies to improve patient care n Explain the main purpose and goal of preoperative evaluations n List the most important measures needed to assess preoperatively n Compare and contrast outcomes of patients who receive full preoperative testing vs those who do not n Identify airway anatomy by using the pig trachea samples n Demonstrate cricothyroidotomy procedure on pig trachea n Identity peripheral and vascular anatomy n Identity anatomy of the spine and nerves used for blocks n Describe techniques used in providing blocks and obtaining vascular access Sunday Objectives: n Identity the most common in-flight emergencies n Describe the most common medical equipment found on an airliner n Describe marijuana in terms of substance use disorder n Identity the risks of long-term marijuana use n Identity medical conditions approved for treatment with marijuana n Describe the current difficult airway algorithm n Describe the current controversies in difficult airway management n List the medico-legal ramifications for choices made in managing the difficult airway n List a differential diagnosis of respiratory failure n Describe the diagnostic evaluation of the patient with respiratory insufficiency n List the treatments for respiratory insufficiency
