2 Karen Countryman- Roswurm, Ph.D Executive Director Center for Combating Human Trafficking Keith Pickus, Ph.D Director of Operations Center for Combating Human Trafficking Sponsors Welcome We invite you to join us as the WSU Center for Combating Human Trafficking recognizes National Human Trafficking Awareness Month by hosting the Collaborative Multidisciplinary Response Conference - Lessons from the Trenches: Combating Human Trafficking Together. This conference is designed to move beyond Anti-Trafficking 101, to provide learning opportunities that will enhance multidisciplinary professionals ability to more intentionally and effectively serve those at-risk of and/or subjugated to human trafficking. Conference presenters represent Kansans who are nationally recognized for their expertise in the anti-trafficking movement as well as in civic leadership development. Morning presenters will share information regarding their profession s role in the continuum of care for human trafficking victims and/or survivors, areas for development of multidisciplinary partnership, current and future trends, challenges in implementing anti-trafficking responses, and opportunities of evidence-based best practices. Lunch presenters, including Governor Sam Brownback, Attorney General Derek Schmidt, and Kansas US Attorney Barry Grissom, will discuss their role in combating human trafficking. Lastly, facilitated by leadership faculty at the WSU Center for Community Support and Research and the Kansas Leadership Center, the afternoon sessions will offer a participatory learning opportunity that, through the exploration of a case scenario, will illuminate solutions to improving our States response to human trafficking. Don t miss this opportunity to enhance your professional growth and network with multidisciplinary colleagues, partners, and peers in the anti-trafficking movement. 1
3 Keynote Speaker Friday, January 30, 8:45-9:45 a.m. Do No Harm Over the last decade, human trafficking has received increased attention from the media, politicians, multidisciplinary professionals, and concerned citizens alike. This awareness, while well intentioned, has often caused a great deal of harm. It has led to inaccurate definitions, sensationalized images of victims, and disregard for survivor-leader expertise. To put it simply, we must do better. With over 40 years of experience on issues of gender-based violence, Dr. Ron Matson will provide insight into how those seeking to combat human trafficking can first, do no harm. Dr. Matson will share the importance of practicing social and emotional intelligence when working with vulnerable populations and the providers role to relationally engage rather than rescue. Furthermore, with both wisdom and humor, Dr. Matson will challenge participants to set ego aside in order that collaboration can occur fully acknowledging, it is not about us.
