Brawley Drive SW Atlanta, GA (8:00 AM - 5:00 PM ET) HOSTED BY J-SOAP-II TRAINING WITH THE DEVELOPERS The Juvenile Sex Offender Assessment Protocol-II (J-SOAP-II) is a commonly-used risk/needs assessment tool for adolescents. Designed to aid in the systematic review of risk factors that have been identified in the professional literature as being associated with sexual and criminal behavior, the J-SOAP-II is designed to be used with boys aged 12 to 18 years who have been adjudicated for sexual crimes, as well as nonadjudicated youths with a history of sexually coercive behavior. Presented by the developers of the J-SOAP-II, this live and interactive workshop will train you in the use of this seminal instrument. Day 1 will include an overview of what is known about normative sexual behavior in juveniles, the characteristics of youths who sexually abuse, as well as risk and protective factors, assessment and risk assessment, and interventions that can facilitate effective interventions. On Day 2, the development of the J-SOAP-II will be discussed, item-by-item instructions will be given on how to reliably score the measure and interpret its findings, a review of the peer-reviewed research on the J-SOAP-II will be provided, and guidance will be put forth on how to apply J-SOAP-II reporting conventions. Case studies will be employed to allow you to practice using the tool's coding manual and to learn to avoid common administration errors. Robert Prentky, PhD is the co-developer of the J-SOAP-II and Professor in the School of Psychology at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Elected Fellow of both the American Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science, he has practiced as a forensic psychologist for over 30 years, assessing over 2,000 offenders. Dr. Prentky has been the principal or co-principal investigator on 17 state and federal research grants. Author of six books and over 80 articles, his research has focused predominantly on risk assessment models, taxonomic systems, Internet child victimization, childhood antecedents of juvenile/adult outcomes, and campus sexual violence. Former Research Director of the Justice Resource Institute and Clinical Director of the Joseph J. Peters Institute, Dr. Prentky has presented throughout U.S., Europe, Canada, and Israel. Sue Righthand, PhD is the co-developer of the J-SOAP-II and a clinical and consulting psychologist in independent practice. Dr. Righthand has extensive experience working with children with problematic sexual behavior, adolescents and adults who sexually abuse, as well as individuals who have experienced or perpetrated child maltreatment and other forms of violence. Over the years, she has served as a consultant to the Maine Departments of Human Services and Corrections and the Maine District Courts. In addition, she has been affiliated with the University of Maine as an Associate Research Professor. An accomplished researcher, she is a member of the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abuser s Guidelines Committee for Adolescents who have Sexually Abused and is a consultant to the National Center for Sexual Behavior in Youth.
