1 N O V E M B E R 2014 Wilson Health Care Center Communication Link Wilson Renovation Update Renovations are right on schedule. The construction crew has been working on the installation of a new HVAC system. Common areas will have a climate control system in place by November 10th, giving us much more flexibility in switching temperatures. The renovated spaces will also provide a variety of philanthropic naming opportunities to leave a personal legacy or memorialize a loved one while supporting Asbury s investment in Wilson Health Care Center. 2 P A G E 2 A Tradition of 42 Years - The Asbury Christmas Gift Fund Christmas is coming soon and if Christmas is coming soon, it s time to renew a tradition of 42 years - the Christmas Gift Fund. While a variety of faiths are represented among Asbury residents and associates, all faiths and traditions share the ethic of gratitude... Thus, we participate in the Christmas Gift Fund, an act of gratitude, together as one community. Asbury Methodist Village has hundreds of employees ( Associates ), all of whom work hard to make this a good place for residents to call home. All of them appreciate a friendly verbal Thank you but, in addition, you may have thought it would be nice to give a more tangible expression of gratitude. At Asbury, it is a strict rule that no employee may accept any gift of money, or anything of monetary value, from a resident. However, there is one exception. In 1972, at resident initiative, the Christmas Gift Fund for employees was established. Questions and answers about the Fund: Who receives a gift from the Fund? Every employee whose pay is below the upper managerial level receives a gift. That level is set as to reflect the wishes expressed by residents when the Fund was started. (continued on page 8)

Pastoral Care Department - Upcoming Services & Caring Ministers The next Welcome Shabbat service will be on Friday, November 14 at 3:00PM in the Wallace Community Room. Rabbi Risa Weinstein conducts the services. Contact Lila Harvey at x4471 for additional information. There will be an Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service sponsored by the Catholic Community and the Guild Congregation in the Guild Chapel on Tuesday, November 25 at 2:00PM. This service will celebrate Thanksgiving with common prayers and music. It will be followed by refreshments in the Park View Club Room. Two Thanksgiving Eve Services will be held on Wednesday, November 26; 10:30AM in the Kindley Building, 1 st Floor Living Room and 2:00PM in the Wilson Health Care Center Lower Level Social Hall. Rev. Noemi Parrilla- Mena will be officiating. There will be a Thanksgiving Day Mass on Thursday, November 27 at 10:00AM in the Wilson Health Care Center Lower Level Social Hall. 5 P A G E 5 Autumn Musings by the Wilson Health Care Center Resident Writing Group Summer is domineering and jealous. He wants to stay around forever and lure people to the beach for as long as possible. Autumn is docile and mellow. Winter wins in the end and then we hunger for Spring. If I were a leaf changing color, I would feel pretty if I turned scarlet. But if I turned yellow, I would know I was going to die soon. As the sap drains away, my delicate lace begins to show. It s heartless of the tree to toss me off. In October, we have harvest time and then we have the season of Halloween. October and harvest are the color of rust. The witch encounters a bird named Penelope carrying a leaf in her mouth. The witches thought Penelope with her leaf was another witch. 7 P A G E 7 Making the Holidays Special for Your Loved One The holidays will be fast upon us, and we are looking forward to making it a special season. We ve included a list of answers to commonly asked questions we receive from families at the Wilson Health Care Center. Contact your nurse manager with any additional questions. What do I get for my loved one for the holiday? Please ask your Nurse Manager or direct caregiver what your loved one may need. They can let you know if there is a specific article of clothing, style, size etc. Often the resident has need for lotion, creams or other items that have a specific scent that they enjoy. Puzzles, games, or large print books work well too. May I have a holiday meal with my loved one? Absolutely, we encourage it! There will be reservation sheets for specific holiday meals with dates and times for that meal (see page 3). A charge will be attached with directions on payment. Or, you may book a space for a special get-together. You may bring in food items such as a special family dessert or even a whole meal. You may even wish to take your loved one out to a restaurant or home for a visit if possible. How can I get in on the fun? We can always use volunteers. We have volunteers come to help carve turkeys at Thanksgiving, put together Christmas trees, decorate, and so many other things Please contact the Therapeutic Activities Department to see how you can help. Can I offer a gift to the staff? Our staff cannot take individual gifts as part of our policy. It is not unusual for families to offer something to each shift, that may be shared. You may wish to make a donation to the Associate Christmas Gift Fund (see page 8). A gift for the unit for the use of the residents is always appreciated. Please check with the Nurse Manager for suggestions.

8 P A G E 8 (Continued from page 2) How many employees receive a gift? The number varies with the size of the eligible AMV workforce. In most years, around 700 people. What kinds of jobs do the recipients hold? Asbury Methodist Village has hundreds of employees ( Associates ), all of whom work hard to make this a good place for residents to call home. The largest number are in the nursing departments, mostly in the Wilson Health Care Center; dining services, including dishwashers, cooks and wait staff; as well as in housekeeping. There are also maintenance workers, transportation drivers, security personnel, receptionist-concierge staff, laundry workers, and others, both visible and behind the scenes. How much does each recipient receive? Every eligible employee, full- or part-time, receives the same amount for every hour worked in the preceding 12 months. In 2013, that amount was 21.6 cents/hour worked in the last 12 months. A full-time employee thus received about $425. How much should I give? This one you have to answer for yourself. Consider what amount will give you a warm feeling of having done your part in thanking those who help us, and will fit your budget. In you thinking you might consider that a donation of $1 per day amounts to $365. Or, if you wanted to contribute $1 for the year to each gift recipient, that would total about $700. Again, your budget and your inner warmth will be your best guides. How do I give? Each department created a scarecrow display for the Scarecrow Throw Down Competition, with the Wilson 2nd floor being the winner! Graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows were roasted by the fire. S mores for all!
