2 The 2018 Penn Aorta Course A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO OVERVIEW & TARGET AUDIENCE This program was developed with an important goal of improving health outcomes of patients with aortic diseases. Learning benefits for participating clinicians will include the following: Improving the understanding of the biology of aortic diseases Learning the diagnosis of aortic disease and identifying at-risk populations Better understanding of the medical and surgical approaches to treating aortic disease Developing strategies for life-long management of aortic disease These goals will be accomplished through a multidisciplinary team approach that incorporates cardiovascular medicine, genetics, advanced imaging, critical care, anesthesia, cardiac and vascular surgery and nursing. Case presentations, expert lectures, panel discussions and active audience participation will be employed. This activity has been designed for all physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, medical students, residents and fellows who have an interest in treating patients with acute and chronic aortic disease. LEARNING OBJECTIVES After completing this educational activity, participants should be better able to: Review the modes of therapy for medical stabilization and diagnosis of aortic emergencies Explain the importance of the approach to aortic pathologies from a multidisciplinary and interprofessional team approach Describe the process of transfer of acute aortic emergency patients to a tertiary care center Explain the indications for and technical aspects of treatment of Type A, Type B dissection and traumatic aortic injuries Review the technical aspects of complex aortic valve repair, aortic root and arch repair, and the role of minimally invasive and endovascular techniques Discuss the application of endovascular technologies for the treatment of paravisceral and thoracoabdominal aneurysms Describe the role of the intensive care unit as well as the importance of long term care of the aortic patient
3 HOSTING DEPARTMENTS The 2018 Penn Aorta Course: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Conquering Complex Aortic Disease is hosted by the Cardiovascular Surgery and Vascular Surgery Departments at Penn Medicine. ACCREDITATION AND CREDIT DESIGNATION In support of improving patient care, Penn Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team. Physicians: Penn Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.75 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Physician Assistants: AAPA accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM from organizations accredited by the ACCME or a recognized state medical society. PAs may receive a maximum of 6.75 Category 1 Credits for completing this activity. Nurses: This activity is approved for 6.75 contact hours. CERTIFICATES AND TRANSCRIPTS After the symposium has concluded, all participants will receive a follow-up containing a link to the post-test, symposium evaluation and credit request. Once participants submit the request for credit, the credit can be viewed on a transcript or certificate can be printed by logging onto Disclosures Faculty and planners disclosure information will be made available in the conference materials and syllabi. Faculty members are also expected to disclose to participants any discussions of off-label and/or investigational uses of pharmaceutical products within their presentations. Rubenstein Auditorium at the Smilow Center for Translational Research, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, 3400 Civic Center Boulevard, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, The Arthur H. Rubenstein Auditorium is located on the 1 st Floor level of the Smilow Translational Research Center (TRC). Smilow TRC is connected to the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine and is located at 3400 Civic Center Blvd, Philadelphia, PA.
