3 Introduction We are very pleased that College of Nursing Jesenice has this time hosted this event, the fourth seminar to be held in what has become an annual event for academics and master students from each of the participating universities and university colleges. As you know, the first Works in Progress Seminar was hosted in Oslo in 2008 by Høgskolen i Oslo and brought together participants from four institutions: Høgskolen i Oslo, Norge; Instituto Politécnico de Leiria, Portugal; Trinity College Dublin, Ireland; and Rīgas Stradiņa Universitāte, Latvijā. The second seminar was hosted in Leiria in 2009 by Instituto Politécnico de Leiria with participants from three of the four original institutions; Rīgas Stradiņa Universitāte could not attend. In 2010, the College of Nursing Jesenice joinedthe three original institutions when the seminar was hosted by Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. The primary focus of the international seminar has been to provide master level students with the opportunity to share the work they have done on their theses or projects with fellow students and faculty in an international, supportive environment. Through this, all participants gain deeper insights not only into specific research and development areas but also about implementation of master programs, best practice examples, and areas where faculty can introduce improvements to their teaching practices in second-cycle programs. Our common desire is to share experiences and create opportunities for further cooperation on joint development projects and programs. The student submissions presented at the WIP seminar are at the core of our endeavors. By exchanging thoughts, we generate new ideas for continuous research activities required in the fields of nursing, midwifery, and other health care professions now and in the future. We strongly believe in the idea behind WIP and in the opportunities for development and growth generated by such common international events. Dr. Brigita Skela Savič, Assistant Professor D E A N
4 1. Seminar participants Papers and presentations were grounded in nursing professions, and related to students work in their respective master programmes. Papers were submitted to home institution coordinators. Accepted papers were sent by each participating institution to the College of Nursing Jesenice where they were collected and organized into a booklet. 15 participating master students presented their master thesis or research at this seminar. 9 lecturers and other support staff also attended. 7 3. Seminar agenda The seminar was held for 2 days (10 th & 11 th November 2011) at College of Nursing Jesenice (Slovenia). On the first day, the event was held on the Jesenice campus. On the second day the seminar took place in Ljubljana at the M- Hotel. In addition to formal work, social activies were also scheduled to promote developing links between all participants. All the working meals (lunches, coffees breaks) took place on campus or at the M Hotel. We had one dinner in Šambala restaurant (Ljubljana) and the other in Radovljica (Lecter restaurant). We also organized sightseeing of Radovljica city. All these activities provided an excellent opportunity to bring all the seminar participants together and allow them to discuss other subjects related to their academic and professional life. 9 4. Evaluation of the seminar Academic staff and students had the opportunity to evaluate the seminar through questionnaires with opened and closed questions. After that we all had a meeting to share and discuss opinions and proposals for the near future. We have written down some of these on flip chart. These are: We have learned something new, heard new things; We were able to share common problems and participate in discussion; Lecturers have given us some good ideas, proposals; We were able to see how the knowledge was implemented into practice; We have heard about some amazing research; We are able to improve our work; High level of knowledge; High passion / devotion to projects; Transformative learning (from teachers to students & vice versa); Good organization and atmosphere; We could create a common web page (Facebook); Walk in progress. According to the participants estimation of certain event activities (such as the venue, meeting rooms, presentations, organization etc.) the estimation of the duration of the presentations and estimation of the duration of the discussions both received the lowest scores (from 5 scores they get only 2 scores). The comments below may provide an explanation for the low score in that the days were long and intense, and there was a need for a few more breaks. The additional explanation is written in a Table 4.

12 5. International WIP seminar in the framework of Erasmus IP courses (Lifelong Learning Programme) The Works in Progress group within the Iris consortium will be arranging a two week Erasmus intensive programme expanding on the structure and themes of the previous Works in Progress programs. The IP will be start on May 13 th and end on May 25 th and Oslo and Akerhus University College will host the event in Oslo, Norway. The main objectives for the IP are to link students and faculties across disciplines and borders to promote common visions for developing and advancing knowledge in nursing and allied professions. We plan to achieve this by providing an opportunity for students to develop and refine original, innovative ideas within a European research and development context. A supportive environment will be created in which students can apply knowledge and problem solving skills in an international, multi-disciplinary context. Students will also improve their grasp on qualitative and quantitative methods and their ability to clarify and communicate complicated concepts. The IP is open for students enrolled in fulltime and part-time Master programmes in nursing and allied professions at one of the following institutions: Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, Portugal, College of Nursing Jesenice, Slovenia, Oslo University College, Faculty of Nursing, Norway, School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College, Dublin Ireland. Information about applying to this programme is available from each participating institution.
13 6. Acknowledgements College of Nursing Jesenice wishes to thank the participating higher education institutions for their help in making this seminar possible. We also wish to thank to all students, who have presented such interesting and valuable master thesis or researches.
