This program uses an innovative model that considers health to be a performance that can be improved through coaching. Connect: Communication and Health A program developed for nurses who work telephonically to empower patients to act on their own behalf. Nurses use internet and other materials to guide patients to needed resources. The Physician Supervisor A program developed for physicians who are called upon to supervise other physicians and non-physician staff. The program addresses the four supervisory roles and the skills associated with each role. Strangers in Crisis A program developed for hospitalists and emergency department physicians to develop communication skills in working with patients, families, and colleagues. The program addresses the unique challenges of communication under stress. Beyond Informed Consent A program developed for medical practitioners to develop skills in shared decision making and to view the informed consent process as an opportunity to have a meaningful conversation about treatment and outcome possibilities. C.A.R.E. A program developed for non-clinical staff who have extensive interactions with patients. The goal of the program is to position all communication as one aspect of health care and, thus, has consequences for health outcomes. This program is used in various health care settings. Coaching For Improved Performance A program developed for faculty and trainers in residency programs and health care organizations. The goal of the program is to teach coaching skills to individuals who are responsible for improving the performances of clinicians regardless of the setting. Choices and Changes A series of workshops developed for clinicians in medical settings to develop skills in influencing patient health behaviors. This program is conducted in hospitals, medical schools, and managed health care settings. Intensive Review Of Clinician-Patient Communication A program that is a composite of a one week educational intervention and on-going coaching for clinicians who need or want to make dramatic gains in their cliniciancommunication skills. This program is offered by various managed care organizations and by the Institute for Healthcare Communication. Communication: A Risk Management Tool A two-hour program for clinicians in medical settings. The program focuses on those communication behaviors that have been shown to have a strong relationship to the likelihood of malpractice litigation. 5 of 7
6 Difficult Clinician-Patient Relationships A program developed for clinicians in medical settings to develop the skills in working with difficult relationships between clinicians and patients. This program is conducted in hospitals, medical schools, and managed health care settings. Clinician-Patient Communication A program developed to enhance the communication skills of clinicians in medical settings. This program is conducted in hospitals, medical schools, and managed health care settings. More than 28,000 clinicians have attended this program. Faculty Development Courses A series of one week to one day programs to enable clinicians to coach, teach communication skills, and change organizational systems. Train the Trainers A program developed for GlaxoSmithKline to train medical school faculty, primarily physicians and psychologists, to counsel third year medical students on their choice of specialty. Eighty-five percent of the medical schools in the United States have sent participants to this program. The Well of Hope A program of three two and one half day workshops to accelerate the development of leaders. Program is sponsored by several organizations and academic institutions. Together. A three day retreat for leaders and managers who work in settings where it is difficult to obtain peer support. The program is designed to help create leadership "convoys" and provide an opportunity for renewal. The program has been attended by managers and leaders from a wide variety of organizations. Star Performance A three day program to develop the skills of supervisors in generating high level performance especially in creative and research groups. Program utilizes two innovative models for examining performance and has been offered by communication companies and various organizations. Breakthrough A two and one half day workshop in creative problem solving skills. During the program participants tackle difficult problems they are encountering in their lives: home, work, community. Changing Social Systems A five day program to train change agents in the development of change strategies for large institutions and communities. Program has been sponsored by United Ways and other organizations concerned with changing large systems. Seminar in Strategic Planning A five day program to train managers and leaders in the creation and execution of organizational strategies. Program is based on strategic planning handbook developed by the author. Presentations 6 of 7 More than two hundred invited presentations at professional meetings and health care organizations.
