1 King Khalid University Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Course Syllabus Course Title: Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Course Number: NURS 411 Credit Hours: 6(3+3) Actual Contact Hours: 12(3+9) Pre-requisite: ---- Concurrent: Placement: Seventh Level General aim of the psychiatric & mental health nursing. 1 Nursing Department The learners are expected at the end of psychiatric mental - health nursing course to demonstrate the knowledge, attitude and skills that allow them to assess an individual psychological state, and within a general nursing framework to plan and implement nursing interventions based on sub-understanding and nursing process Course description: The course provides the theoretical and practical bases for the care of psychiatric patients and the promotion and maintenance of mental health of individual's at different age groups. Nursing process is strong emphasis that is integrated throughout the psychiatric nursing course rather than focusing on the patient's mental disorders, its etiology, signs & symptoms & medical treatment. Several net worthy features of the curriculum include nursing assessment, and nursing diagnosis guidelines, attention to

2 the guiding principles of psychiatric nursing and the specific nursing actions derived from those principles. The exemplification of behavioral dysfunctions and their theoretical bases through clinical case studies, nurse-patient dialogues and interactions and view of the nursing process at work through nursing care plans. Course Objectives: At the end of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Define concept of mental health and mental illness. 2. Identify the historical perspective of care of mentally ill through the years 3. Identify the signs and symptoms as observed on patients 4. Describe phases of a therapeutic relationship. 5. Differentiate among the defense mechanism that protect ego against anxiety 6. Analyze use,indication, action, side effects & complication of E.C.T 7. List the level of individual psychotherapy 8. Identify different tasks in group psychotherapy 9. Describe the normal physiological & psychological change accruing during aging process 10. Identify the different therapies include in milieu therapy 11. Differentiate among terms related to self concept 12. Discriminate between major terms commonly use in discussion of drug abuse 13. Determine the sings & symptoms as presented by the patient 14. Analysis the activities of psychiatric nursing in implementing psychiatric nursing principles. 15. Construct objectives of psychiatric nursing care. 16. Describe basic assumptions of therapeutic milieu. 17. Explore the coping Communicate therapeutically with mentally ill patients. 18. Conduct activity therapy in therapeutic milieu. 19. Apply nursing care for patient undergoing electro convulsive therapy. 20. Apply psychiatric nursing principles in interacting with mentally ill patients. 21. Internalize process of therapeutic communication. 22. Incorporate psychiatric nursing principles in interacting with patient. 23. Gain insight about the motive of behavior. 24. Interpret the different signs & symptoms of psychiatry. 25. Practice skills of observation & interviewing. 2

Psychotherapy Electroconvulsive therapy Child Psychiatry & Adolescents problems Psycho geriatric Nursing Substance abuse & drug dependence Community mental health nursing Stress & stress management Self-awareness Counseling Woman mental health Milieu therapy Clinical Experience: The clinical experience will be divided into two main areas: an out-patient and an in-patient experience having the following objectives: Objectives of the out-patient experience By the end of the outpatient experience, the learner should be able to: Identify the overall services rendered at a psychiatric outpatient. Identify terminology pertinent to the field of psychiatric mental health nursing. Practice skills of observation and interviewing psychiatric patients. Identify causative factors to psychiatric disorders. Identify the concept of prevention in the field of psychiatric and mental health nursing. Objectives of the in-patient experience By the end of the in-patient experience, the learner should be able to: Identify different procedures of admission to psychiatric hospital. 3

4 Deliver a nursing intervention based on nursing process and the principles of psychiatric nursing. Integrate the theoretical knowledge into the practical application. This is through: Communicate with psychiatric patient effectively. Formulate nursing care plan for psychiatric patients appropriately. Use appropriate decision making according to situations. Demonstrate appropriate principles and behaviors in different situations. Apply therapeutic relationship. Apply growth and development theories on psychiatric patients. Prepare the management plan for children and adolescent disturbances. Develop problem-solving technique. Apply counseling relationship. Prepare a plan of care for psychiatric patients. Apply general guidelines for facilitating a therapeutic milieu. Placement of the course During the Level VII of the 4 th year B.S.C. Nursing degree. - Clinical experience: will be divided into two main areas: an out patient and an inpatient experience in mental health hospital Evaluation Methods Evaluation of the clinical performance refers to the 15 weeks of in-patient and outpatient experience of the student. A formative evaluation is carried throughout the clinical experience. Attendance criteria: Student dignity, through: a) Absenteeism or punctuality. b) Uniform. c) Communication and cooperative with health team, clients & her colleagues. d) This course will involve also, discussions, class activities, students are expected to attend all classes and student are expected to read all assignment in advance and written assignment requisites.
